Haggling tips
2007-06-25 10:28:00
I usually shop in flea market like that near Beijing Zoo, or the more organize ones in Silk market or Yashow market. I can’t help but notice how the vendors would give higher prices to foreigners or those who can’t understand Chinese well. Of course, I couldn’t buy an overpriced jacket that normally would cost half the price, I tend to haggle until they get pissed off. My friends have developed some ‘walk away” strategy when shopping. When the vendors shout a high price, my friends say that it’s expensive, then walk away slowly until the vendors would lower the price. Usually they would lower it a bit but don’t get excited at their price. Act nonchalantly. Then they usually ask how much you want it, don’t say your price (of course since they know you don’t know the running price for the item)..just say, “What’s the lowest price you can offer?” = (Ni zui di de jia ge shi she me?) Can’t imagine it g...

Forbidden City
2007-06-22 20:25:00
Forbidden City is a famous tourist spot in Beijing. Though it may be a bit crowded during weekends, you should at least have a peek at a historical palace and behold the beautiful artifact of history. If you can imagine a bull’s eye target, the map of Beijing is similar to that, with Forbidden city and Tiannanmen Square being the one in the middle. The complex consists of 800 buildings with 8,886 rooms and covers 720,000 square metres. The Forbidden City was declared a World Heritage Site in 1987 as the “Imperial Palace of the Ming and Qing Dynasties”,[1] and is listed by UNESCO as the largest collection of preserved ancient wooden structures in the world. A brief history I heard while I was eavesdropping on the other group’s tour guide..The imperial garden is where the emperor would have different beautiful ladies scattered around the place, and there he would pick his liking and be his chosen courtesan for the night. Intriging… Though the la...
Top 5 Karaoke place
2007-06-20 10:33:00
Sing your heart away..in Chinese, English, Korean, Thai, and some even in Tagalog! My friends and I usually hang out in Lion King KTV which is near our place in Wotaukou. It has selection of English music sort of updated but you can still endure. The lighting inside the room is a bit dark and the room can be really warm especially when you invite all your friends and get all crazy drunk. You can’t bring your own booze or drinks or else you’ll pay for the corkage fee. We love hanging out in this KTV during cold boring nights and letting our inner “popstar” shine through among our circle of shameless friends. Here are some other KTV place you can try out according to Cityweekend, the TOP 5! 1. Cashbox Party World — Their Chaowai location has 130 rooms while their Shouti location has nearly 100. All patrons are rewarded with a free buffet that includes all three meals of the day. Domo arigato, Mr. Roboto! Open 24 hours. ¥39-365 per hour. Tel: 6588...

Beijing Olympics Medal unveiled
2007-06-15 08:09:00
(BEIJING, March 27) — On the occasion of the 500-day countdown to the opening of the Beijing Olympic Games, the Organizing Committee for the Games of the XXIX Olympiad (BOCOG) unveiled the Games’ medals. BOCOG Executive Vice-President and chairman of the evaluation panel Jiang Xiaoyu attended the unveiling ceremony and delivered a speech at the Capital Museum on Tuesday. The medals are designed with inspiration from “bi”, China’s ancient jade piece inscribed with dragon pattern. The medals, made of gold and jade, symbolize nobility and virtue and are embodiment of traditional Chinese values of ethics and honor. The medals are 70mm in diameter and 6mm in thickness. On their obverse side, the medals adopt the standard design prescribed by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) — a drawing that represents the winged goddess of victory Nike and Panathinaikos Arena, while on their reverse side, the medals are inlaid with jade with the Beijing Games ...

Haerbin (哈尔滨)
2007-06-14 08:53:00
Haerbin (or Harbin) is a place where famous ice festival are held annually starting early January. This is located Northeast China and is the capital of HeiLongJiang. Because it’s near Russia, the architectures are very different than those in mainland China. Influence by Russian colonization, the place has still a lot of Russian translation in stores, billboards. The Old St. Sophia Cathedral is still well preserved but already made into a museum that shows the civilization of Russian Colony. It’s supposed to have the coldest temperature with longest winter however when we went there, it was said to have their hottest winter so to speak. There are different kinds of showcase of snow/ice. From large ice sculpture to lighted ice blocks, they have it all. The huge ice blocks are said to came from the river nearby. There’s also a famous shopping strip where you can view the Russian architectures though I forgot what’s it called.
My 7 Random “only in Beijing” experiences
2007-06-13 08:18:00
My friend Sophie who own a fresh new blog MySummerSolstice tagged me to share 7 random facts about Beijing . Well, couldn’t help but think them over…good or bad…they all happened to me! 1. Prepaid electricity, gas– this is not really a very unusual thing but for me, it is. I need to check our electricity counter everyday to see if we need to buy energy credits. At least we’re all conscious about our usage..we get to calculate our daily expenses. 8 hours of using the aircon will costs us 10 credits. Unfortunately, one time didn’t get to check our gas credit..while I was cooking..dang..gas stopped fuming so microwave became my best friend. 2. Unbashful Comfort room experiences - In Beijing, mostly the urinal is on the floor so the girls and guys who need to poop would need to squat. It was really hard to do it since there’s a possibility of losing your balance. Well, that quite didn’t matter. What ticked me..I get to open cubic...

Beihai Park
2007-06-08 09:54:00
Beihai park is one of the ancient imperial gardens in Beijing that is still well-preserved. We visited the place to be able to exhaust our time in Beijing. Interestingly, there’s a serious history behind every scupture, temple, place we visited. We often just take pictures and walk away, but then, looking back..I was really amazed by the ancient artifacts that were still in good condition. The weather wasn’t on our side that windy cold day..it was almost gloomy everywhere. The White Dagoba would have looked better on the sunny day. UPCLOSE: On top of the Jade Flowery Islet, the White Dagoba was built in 1651 on the former site of the Palace in the Moon where Kublai Khan received Marco Polo. At the suggestion of a famous Tibetan lama, Emperor Shunzhi, the first emperor of the Qing Dynasty agreed to build such a Tibetan dagoba to show his belief in Buddhism and his desire for the unification among various Chinese ethnic groups. The White Dagoba was destroyed in an...

“WC” to be changed into Toilet
2007-06-07 09:53:00
Beijing’s battle to standardize and correct English-language signs ahead of the 2008 Olympics has claimed another head — “W.C..” By the end of the year, all public conveniences in the city will be called “toilets” instead of the venerable, Victorian-era sounding abbreviation for “water closet,” state media reported on Wednesday. “In many Western countries they don’t use the term W.C. at all,” the Beijing Morning Post said. “Because in English, it’s equivalent to what we would call in China an outhouse, and is a rather crude slang term,” it added, without explaining how it had got this impression. Also on the list are road signs. Use of the romanized form of Chinese, known as “pinyin,” will be replaced by the actual English word, except for proper names, the newspaper added. Out will go Dong Chan g an Jie and in will come East Changan Avenue. But a rather more vexing question has been what ...

Peking University (Beida 北京大学)
2007-06-01 15:39:00
One of the TOP UNIVERSITIES of Beijing is Peking Univ ersity (also known as Beida). This huge university is located at the heart of Haidian District, near Zhongguancun (electronic haven of Beijing). The university boasts quality education, huge buildings, superb sceneries, ancient architectures since it was once Qing Dynasty’s royal garden. Anyone can enter the campus because it also holds a great many sights to behold. I went here once to take pictures! The huge campus is also perfect for biking. If you plan to study Mandarin here, you must take a test to see if you pass their standards. I think you must at least know basic Mandarin. The curricullum is much stricter that other school in terms of attendance. Some of my friends told me that they have exams every other day! They’re not many foreigners who study here. After reading their website, I saw that they offer scholarship programs for foreigners. You can check it out! Peking Univers ity INFO
Nationalistic Chinese
2007-05-30 18:32:00
I’m a pure Chinese living outside China, been brought up in a totally different culture but my parents still maintained traditional Chinese culture, much more traditional than what I saw while I lived in Beijing for 6 months. I wanted to feel, how is it to be nationalistic…and there was a rumor I heard that there is the usual flag raising in Tiananmen Square around 6am, more on before the sun rises. There we were, trying to get the feel of China through flag raising. Surprising, I saw a lot of locals still queueing to see the flag being raised. The winds were blowing hard that day, we weren’t prepared enough (clothwise), freezing ice cold but no choice but to stand for 30 minutes waiting for the soldiers to match in with the flag. The loud music (national athem) played and for a while (it took only 5minutes!) I felt the “nationalistic” spirit of China…I felt a native Chinese for a while. It was all worth it!
In love with La Paleta dessert
2007-05-29 08:48:00
La Pale ta is a sister venue of Bellagio that serves Cantonese food, dimsums, noodles, Hongkong style iced teas and a selections of iced desserts. My favorite has always been this: Mango and coconut ice dessert. The coconut ice cream simply is the best I’ve tried. The light serving of Chinese food is appetizing and the service is also acceptable. Daily 10am-12mn. Bldg 4 Anhuili Erqu (by the Asian Games Village) Chaoyang District (6481 0887)

Huang Shan (黄山)

Go to the Jade Screen Pavilion to view the South Sea, the Refreshing Terrace for the North Sea, the Paiyun Tower for the West Sea, the White Goose Ridge for the East Sea and the Legendary Turtle Peak for the Sky Sea. There are a lot of poems which describes the ever immortal beauty of Huangshan (黄山). “Clouds in a myriad of forms”, “Peaks piercing the sky”, “A cool world”, “Fantastic and beautiful”, “Scenery of exceptional charm” are some phrase that describes the mountain. It is also an inspiration to some ancient famous painters of China. You can check out the description of Huangshan here. It is said that the four wonders of Huangshan are the strange pines, absurd stones, sea of clouds and hot springs. I’ve researched and found out that the best time to travel Huangshan is in winter because the place will look like winter wonderland. Unfortunately, the winter season this year is warmest ever (the loca...
The Place Mall
2007-05-23 07:35:00
This is the newest mall I saw which looked so luxurious. I guess they want to market the Class A B of Beijing. The Place is located near Silk Market. It tends to market to Class A B of Beijing. The magnificent grandeur design is something to be excited about. Top that with a huge atrium where you can stroll around on a sunny day. I remember seeing the huge Zara store (first branch in Beijing) so I went in to take a look. There’s not many people during weekdays but I’m sure this mall will be a hit to shoppers because of the quiet ambiance. This new Beijing landmark, with its striking projection screen, will house Spanish fashion chain Zara and Canadian shoe retailer Aldo’s flagship store. Other outlets include Potato & Co., Folli Follie, Miss Sixty, Energie, Adidas, MAC makeup, Promod, Jessica, Chaterhouse and the Swiss Perfumery Shop. Old Beijing: Hutong Pizza
2007-05-16 16:59:00
Pizza in beijing! Can’t believe there’s a good tasting pizza in China. This place’s location is a bit of a maze because it’s located inside the old streets also called Hutong (胡同). I appreciate the old-school feeling when I go to the place. The place is nice, small but still very comfy to hang around. There’s a mini garden where you can see oriental type of interiors. Lesson from my first experience going there, look for a map not just address then call for a reservation. They actually close a bit early (before 12mn I think) so late night eaters beware, don’t go knocking at dawn! The pizza are relatively unique because it’s not the usual round pie. I was actually amazed by their Mediterranean (Mozzarella cheese, tomato sauce, pepperoni, roasted aubergine, courgette, pesto, feta cheese, olives) pizza. You can also try the Parma or Roast Chicken. I also tried their appetizers (jacket potatoes) but wasn’t so amazed with it...

Crystal Jade Restaurant (beijing)

A room that is fit for a king/queen… That’s what Crystal Jade offered us for no additional charge since it was the only room that can fit us (we were 15-16 i think). So we enjoyed the luxurious room without boring a hole in our thin pockets! The service is close to perfect since we were assigned a server who generously given us much attention. The serving of the food is rather small though the price is steep. The restaurant prides itself for the first class Cantonese cuisine. If I want to show off one of the best restaurant to foreign friends, I would probably bring them here. The classy lounge has a perfect ambiance to sit and sip expensive wines! There are several private rooms in the place, the public area is also classy. It’s decorated with huge chandeliers and rich red wallpapers. I can compare that to a moulin rouge setting! 8515-0238 BB78-BB82, Oriental Plaza, 1 Dongchang’an Jie 东长安街1号东方新天地地铁层B B78-BB82...

Fragrant Hill — Xiang Shan (香山)
2007-05-08 19:03:00
Fragrant Hill s , a public park in Haidian District, is said to have a beautiful view when autumn comes. The pine trees turning fiery red or orange is a sight to behold. We always heard rumors that it was already turning that color but alas, we got the wrong timing. I went here twice already but I never behold the famous sights. Locals love to visit this place not just for the scene, but also a good exercise for them. There was a choice to walk or take the cable car, I always take the later since I’m not fond of mountain climbing/walking. The entrance for student for the park is around 5 rmb but 10 rmb if you’re an ordinary tourist. The cable car costs around 25 rmb one way if I remembered right. Unfortunately, the cable car is only up to 530pm. Major places we should have gone: Studio of Tranquil Heart It was first built in mid-16th century under the Ming and was reconstructed in the Qing period. Temple of Heaven (天坛)
2007-05-06 19:38:00
I love this place! Seemingly, it’s because of the serene surroundings that it has amidst being inside the urban city of Beijing. I’ve seen that this is the symbol that China decides to parade in the Olympics 2008 Summer games rather than the Great Wall. I’m not very good at the history of this place so I took time to research in Wikipedia (which is banned in China internet, don’t know why). Temp le of Heaven is in the Xuanwu District southeast of Beijing. This ancient temple is one the temples where the emperors prayed for good harvest. I got a hold of a map of the place, but I wasn’t able to finish getting around the place since we took a lot of time taking pictures while in the big hall where it was said that the emperor would shout, and the whole city will hear some rumble (that was before because everything was quieter before!) Some facts from WIKI: * The Temple is surrounded by two cordons of walls; the outer wall has a taller, ...

BEIJING, April 16 — More than seven million very affordable tickets are now on sale for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing , the Beijing Organizing Committee for the Games of the XXIX Olympiad (BOCOG) announced Sunday. About 75% of the tickets will be sold domestically and the rest will be available to the overseas public. Late last year, BOCOG announced that ticket prices for the Games will be in keeping with its efforts to host Games accessible to the broadest spectrum of people. Anticipating a high level of demand, BOCOG Executive Vice President and Secretary General Wang Wei reiterated that the ticketing process will be conducted in the most efficient, fair and open manner possible and will follow internationally-accepted practices. Sossy drink, loud funky music from hip hop , rnb, house etc! They got it all in Babyface ! Inside Babyface, it’s dark, loud and smokey as usual for a hip bar. When you enter, you can choose which room you prefer to hang out and dance. There are also private rooms up stairs for one to hang without being gawked by other people in other tables. There were lots of mainlanders who look like from aged 25 above. We ordered Johnny Walker with a set of muchers (fruits, chips). I like the songs in the hiphop rnb room (english songs by the way) but the songs are not updated. The chill/house room got some DJs doing the music and the dance floor is more spacious. Beijing Language and Culture Univ ersity (BLCU) is where I studied for technically 5 months for an intensive Mandarin course. I had my classes at Run Run shaw building. BLCU has a variety of students from all over the globe, most of my classmates came from Korea, some Italians, Indonesians, Thailanders, Pakistans. BLCU has a spacious campus with amble greeneries to mentally relax a tired mind. Although it seems that the guards are not strict enough, our teachers say that the guards know who seems suspicious. There was no ID system where they check when you get in, but we have our student ID. Inside the campus, there are several dormitory. My friends stayed in dorm 4 and dorm 17. Dorm 4 is near Runrun shaw Building is it’s easier not to be late (yeah right!?!). Dorm 17 is said to be have nicer rooms because it’s the newest building. Although I saw new dormitories under construction, will probably finish before the year ends. You can opt to stay outs...

Paul’s steak and egg
2007-05-01 12:47:00
We came upon this homey restaurant one night to try out some Western steaks my friends missed. This restaurant is located along a strip of restaurants like Grandma’s Kitchen, near TGIF. We were kind of lost at first but fortunately, found this small place. Before going there, we reserved seats just to make sure. We heard that their steaks are wondrous but I think the price is a bit steep for the quality. I loved the mashed potatoes more! Their pancakes were so so, but the maple sauce saved them from mediocrity. Overall, I think the food is just okay. Kind of reminded me of homestyle meal but served it’s purpose since the atmosphere creates that notion. Good thing, we chanced upon meeting the owner himself! Address: 1. Great wall experiences
2007-04-26 17:10:00
They say that one the must-do before anyone dies is walk the Great wall in China which some see as one of the new seven wonders of the world. YES! At least I can cross that off my list of must-do! I’ve walked up the Great Wall twice and each time I did..it blew me away..from the sights and also the walking! I dare say, that the old ones walking up are far better than I am. Mutianyu: This area is where tourist mostly go. We went here for our field trip in school (BLCU ‘06). We went up these stairs first before reaching the Great wall. My classmates chose to go to the right, but both ends have some limit where tourist need to stop since it’s dangerous already. The steps here are more messier. I had a harder tiem walking up but I reached some end! I reached some end after meditating about getting my breath. After the long walk, I rode a toboggan ride..which costs around 100rmb if I remember correctly. Takes you down fast! Badaling: This area is also pack...

Beijing Street Food
2007-04-20 19:13:00
Beijing has well known street food often seen anywhere. My favorites are baozi and jiaozi which are almost sold in small restaurant they call Chengdu Xiaozhir shops. Baozi are like starchy bread with stuffings inside while the Jiaozi are dumplings, you usually choose the ones with vegetable stuffings or meat stuffings. When I walk by the small restaurants, I usually see stalls upfront selling those. For about 5 rmb, you get more than 10pcs per pack of Jiaozi. Although they may seem oily, (yes, they are oily for my taste), but they fill my appetite for some quick snack. But interestingly, I saw some other street food usually sold in high foot traffic sidewalks. Like this… It’s usually a morning snack. This crunchy snack is quick interesting to look at when being made. Imagine the guy/lady usually pour a scoopful of batter then form a crepe skin…then put a crunchy something inside, plus some egg or la jiang (hot sauce) if you prefer..then wala! A chines...

Le Palais dessert madness

This is where I can’t get enough of desserts…a sweet escape from the usual food I see in Beijing! I was amazed by it’s simplicity of ambiance and good service. Every purchase of a delightful sweetness, we got free coffee or tea! They also offer Friday buffet special (50rmb), eat all you can desserts and if you are a group of 5 or more, you get free wine! This is the must-try (Le Pala is special) one piece costs around 20-25rmb. When we went there again, it was under renovation. Hopefully, by this time, it’s already open! I wonder what’s there to renovate, I thought the place is almost perfect except for the small area, but the home-y design suited its appeal. Peppar farm (bar)
2007-03-28 09:10:00
This is where I spent my New Year’s Eve, unfortunately, it was not so glamourous because in China, they have their own Chinese New year based on the Chinese calendar. One branch of Pepper farm is located near our vicinity (Wotauko). The place looks inviting but doesn’t have huge lighted signs. It’s kind of a lounge place rather than a dance club. The bartenders have occasional bartending shows where ladies can have free drinks of what they made in the show. I like the ambiance here because it looks posh. There are big red couches you can hang out at and chit chat with friends. If you order a Jack daniel’s bottle, there’s a set where pica pica food is included. Like fruits or nachos! Daily 7pm onwards. NOrth of Xijiao hotel, Wangzhuanglu Wodaokou , Haidian. (8237 2963)

Tokugawa japanese feast
2007-03-27 10:54:00
One day, when my friends and I decided to be gluttons for a night, we went to a Japanese restaurant where they have ORDER ALL YOU CAN feast. Since we reserved early, we got to see the sets available for order. You can choose from A, B, C type (68, 78, 98 rmb respectively if it’s still the same). The menu is very clear which you can order if you chose a cheaper set. We wanted to try everything but we only chose the ones we think is worth our money! At first, the service is quite slow but as the orders came in, we filled our stomachs with as much as we could stuff in. The salmon seems fresh but the downside of this kind of buffet, no desserts! In the end, I was sick of sashimi (ok, just for the night) but I get to finish another round of sukiyaki! Yummy! Banana sushi! Tokugawa Ya all you can eat buffet, daily 11am-2pm, 5-930pm. Once, before school began last school year, we went to some show in Red Theater. It was supposed to be about shaolin monks, like a play about kungfu. Didn’t quite understand what the story was but the moral story seems to be about love, honor, etc! It was quite interesting, took a few shots eventhough we were not allowed to take pictures! I enjoyed the first few minutes of the show…seeing a lot of action from the actors which I can’t do even in my wildest dreams! They’re so flexible even kids!!! But the show was too long for my attention (yea, I’ve a bit of an ADD problem you see..) Heck! Encore to the kid actors!

This restaurant is one of the best I tried, it never fails to satisfy me. Voted as “restaurant of the year” and “best business lunch”, this Brazillian fine dining restaurant has quality service coupled with quality food! Their menus change daily (not all though) and there are also exciting choices for vegetarians too! Here’s a sample of their menu! Jiu Zhai Gou Valley is said that this place was formed after an earthquake happened long before. The beautiful lakes were a product of a natural disaster. According to chinatravelguide, “Jiuzhaigou Valley is located in Nanping County, 450 kilometers (about 280 miles) to the north of Chen gdu City. Its name is due to the existence of nine stockaded villages of Tibetan origin, and it is always regarded as a holy mountain and watercourse by the Tibetan people.” This is such a marvel..it was like heaven on earth. The beauty of nature is beyond words to describe. You can just imagine nature at it’s finest…the whole scenery..breathtaking, wonderful. The only downside of it is the hotels you will stay in..expensive but not worth it. I saw one nice hotel, forgot the name, but wasn’t able to stay there because we took a travel package tour.
