Thaksin opted not to take a motorcycle taxi to court, instead choosing to hitch a ride with his buddy Interior Minister Chalerm Yoobamrung. With all the motorbike ...

Lost Boy hits Page Rank 5?
2008-02-27 14:59:00
Something weird is going on with Google?s Page Rank . The last update was about January 10 and it?s usually done every three months or so. However, people are reporting fluctuations in their Page Ranks. This blog is currently showing a PR5, which would mark an increase from the PR4 I?ve had for a year or so ...

Another US fugitive sent on his merry way from Thailand
2008-02-26 16:59:00
I’m starting to wonder what we are all doing here. We live in this bizarre world where we can no longer look at teachers and take them seriously. I’m not even talking about the hapless travellers who make their way to Phuket and discover the meaning of life — there are individuals even more despicable. A brief digression about these travellers: I was sat with work colleague at a restaurant during my lunch break yesterday. On this particular lunch break, a dreadlocked lady walked past, looked at us and burst out laughing. Nobody saw her except me, but I knew exactly what she was thinking. We weren’t doing the Thailand right. We weren’t living her dream, sat in that restaurant. It’s her — with her refined sense of worldliness — who sees things from the other side. A group of shirted foreigners eating Western fare is unacceptable. My editor and news editor were having lunch in the same restaurant some time ago, when an aged teacher walked over to their table...

How long before we see another **** in Thailand?
2008-02-23 06:11:00
The new ?war on drugs? is a serious worry. While it is important not to make rash judgments about how this initiative will pan out, from the offset, it paints a grim picture. This from The Nation today: “Should we do nothing because we are afraid that someone is going to criticise us for silence killings ...

Another Canadian dies in Thailand
2008-02-22 03:21:00
No details as to which province she was in, but another Canadian has died in Thailand . Although this makes five so far in 2008, this particular case looks to be nothing more than a tragic accident. Of course, that could all change once the global media gets hold of the story. From Canwest News Service: A ...

Is Thailand a haven for US criminals?
2008-02-21 04:11:00
It?s only a matter of time before more reports like this come out. The headline reads, ?Thailand can be a haven for those fleeing the United States.? From Statesman.com: In downtown Bangkok, street vendors offer forged American driver’s licenses for about $35. Medical clinics provide plastic surgery for a fraction of U.S. prices. Hotel owners often ...

Yes, it’s not really a date, but I will be hanging out with someone who is, apparently, very famous. Drug raids in Thailand
2008-02-17 13:58:00
Nothing disrupts a night out like being made to pee in a cup. Luckily for me, I arrived about 20 minutes after what looked like some sort of army maneuver had taken place. Saturday night, about 11 pm and six of us drove to a small club in Phuket Town. The club is nothing special and ...

Wanted Americans nabbed in Thailand
2008-02-15 03:41:00
Yet more wanted US criminals have turned up in Thailand . From the Gazette yesterday: A man wanted for child molestation by police in the US state of Missouri was arrested Tuesday afternoon and has been turned over to the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) for extradition. [Earl Russel] Bonds, 42, was handed to FBI agents at Phuket International Airport last night and flown to Bangkok to await an extradition order to the US. This bonds story was all over Fox News and was made especially creepy by the fact that a short story he wrote can be read online. The story, which one first prize in a competition, is about a boy who is molested by his father. I may post excerpts from the story later. Then the “ponytail bandit” turned up on Khao San. From The Nation today: Police have arrested a 21-year-old American woman dubbed the “ponytail bandit”, who is accused of robbing seven banks in three US states. They arrested her in a hotel in Khao San Road. Acting on a request...

Gunman slays five in Illinois campus shooting
2008-02-15 03:00:00
Another campus shooting in the US. Another tragedy. Top story around the world today: A gunman killed five students and wounded 16 others in a Northern Illinois University lecture hall on Thursday afternoon in DeKalb before killing himself, according to university and police officials. The shooting occurred on the campus of Northern Illinois University in DeKalb, Ill. Jim Killam/Northern Star. John G. Peters, the president of Northern Illinois University, reported at a news conference that four of the dead were women and two were men. He said four died at the scene, including the gunman, and the other two died at the hospital. All the wounded and the dead were students, including the graduate student leading the ocean sciences class. According to students in the class, a tall white skinny man dressed in black stepped out from behind a curtain on the stage of the lecture hall, said nothing, and opened fire with a shotgun. The Token White Boy responds
2008-02-14 08:27:00
Fair enough. I stated that I thought “The Token White Boy” was similar to “The Lost Boy” and the author of the column in question has responded. It’s only fair that he has his say, just as Andrew Spooner had his, although this matter isn’t quite as pressing as Britons dying in Thailand. From Adam R—-n: I’d never read your work until it was pointed out to me that you were spouting off about me on the Internet. I’ve been getting paid to write since I was 18-years-old by newspapers, magazines and for the Internet. I’ve worked as a freelancer and a staffer. I’ve written news, features and columns and been a sub and a magazine editor. Would I have got this far by “biting your style”? I think we both know the answer to that. Thanks for the welcome to Thailand. Where were you to welcome me the first time I came here, ooh, let me think…in 1987? How old are you again? 24? That makes you younger than me. OK, OK. I stand corrected. I don’t need another sworn e...

Four Canadians shot in Thailand this year
2008-02-14 04:05:00
Hot on the heels of Andrew Spooner?s article about how dangerous Thailand is for British citizens, it looks like there is a group of people even more at risk: Canadians . Four Canadians have been shot in Thailand this year, two fatally. The first and most publicized case is that of Leo John Del Pinto, who was ...

Guru Magazine’s Token White Boy
2008-02-13 03:11:00
I don’t read Guru magazine much; there’s little point now that live in Phuket, but I was intrigued to read the Token White Boy’s column. The premise of this chap’s gig is that he’s a white boy who has been living in Bangkok for a year and writes about the things that confuse him. It sounds vaguely familiar. I feel like I’m being terribly arrogant here, but it appears that this guy is biting my style. Looking at it from the other side, I can now appreciate why I drew so much heat from writing “Lost Boy” columns. I didn’t have anything groundbreaking to say – and neither does this Adam R—-n, who still seems surprised that there are elephants in the streets and dogs that bark at night. Looking at the credits of Guru, the Token White Boy is actually the sub editor of the magazine. Funnily enough, a year ago, I’d have loved to be doing that job; I even pushed for Guru to hire me, but it wasn’t to be. I’ve probably been unfair as I’ve read only one of...

This is a sad story that I touched on briefly the other day. Henrik Rasmussen , 47, was a Danish tourist holidaying with his cousin. Noppadon gets to work
2008-02-07 15:31:00
For the past year or so, Noppadon Pattama has been the voice of Thaksin Shinawatra. Whenever Thaksin has been in the news, it was always Noppadon, Thaksin?s legal advisor, who had something to say. This is the same Noppadon who is Thailand?s new foreign minister. The Bangkok Post reported that ?Mr Noppadon vowed he will not ...

Are Thailand?s physically-disabled women being sterilized against their wil
2008-02-06 03:52:00
Some physically-disabled women in Thailand have, according to The Nation, been sterilized without their knowledge or permission. There are a lot of holes in this news story, but if what is being asserted is true, it?s unacceptable. “Some of them don’t even know when it happened,” Nattaya Boonpakdee said yesterday. “These women found out the harsh ...

Samak?s snout stirs up strife

Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej does have a rather interesting-looking nose. Cartoonists around Thailand have been having a blast with the possibilities for sketching the PM?s nasal cavities. Television signers have come under fire recently for holding onto their noses as a way to represent Samak. Apparently, the nose-touching sign has been in use for more than ...

He succumbed after a short battle with pneumonia. Jeremy Beadle was one of those entertainers who many of us grew up with. It?s a great shame to ...
