Delhi Rickshaw Ride
2007-06-29 02:58:00 Delhi India, January 7, 2007This story is from my recent Journey in India.Aw and I are six kilometers from the Tibetan Settlement where we're staying here in Delhi. A skinny man in a woolen cap indicates that he will give us a ride in his rickshaw. Aw gives me a dubious look. "Too far Stevie. Cannot." He doesn't speak any English but he is smiling and insists that we sit in his rig. "How much?" I ask. He indicates with his fingers 'fifteen rupees'. Oh my God, he's telling us he will take us on that fifteen minute ride for the equivalent of fifty cents Canadian. Aw is still doubtful. "Both?" she asks, pointing back and forth between herself and me. The man nods his head vigorously and indicates that we need to sit in his rickshaw. So off we go. It's chilly out today and as we ride we can feel the cold wind on us. I would never have thought Delhi would be this cold. It's around zero today and we don't have the proper clothes to really stay warm so we hunker down and hang on fo... More About: Delhi , Ride , Shaw
Saying Good Bye To Ayako
2007-06-26 15:09:00 Delhi India, January 10, 2007Ayako is such a sweet woman. She's always cheerful; even when she's going through stomach sickness in Delhi. Today she must head home from her vacation. She flies from Delhi to Sri Lanka, to Bangkok and then to Tokyo. After that she takes a three hour train trip to her home town in Japan. I have seen you so many places in the World Ayako san and you are like a daughter to me. I wish you much happiness and adventure, until we meet again. More About: Good
Happy Birthday To Us
2007-06-24 15:03:00 Waterloo Ontario, June 24, 2007My brother Pete is visiting from White Rock BC and since three of us have our birthdays so close together, Mom decided to have a birthday party for all three of us here in Waterloo. I'm holding the black forest cake with Mike at my right and Pete on my left. (Is that a balloon growing out of my head?) There are a total of 14 family members here, including all the kids. Mom put together a wonderful spread including ham and potato salad and Mike's wife, Lorrie made sushi. Melbah Toasty made her famous chick pea Indian Currie. Since I just got back from India this dish made me feel nostalgic. I even taught my family to do the head 'wobble' that you use when speaking about Indian food. It's great to be part of a family who genuinely like being together and sharing, without feeling any kind of competition; although there is the one bone of contention with the others. They all know (but don't really want to admit) that I am Mom's favorite. Happy birt... More About: Birthday , Happy Birthday
Why Did the Tourist Cross The Road
2007-06-22 02:59:00 This is a story from my recent Journey In IndiaDelhi India, January 9, 2007Aw and I go for a walk in Delhi. We come to an intersection. We need to get across the street. There are road signs but no one really follows them. It's every man (or cow) for himself. This is a movie of our adventure crossing the road. You can hear Aw coaching: "go-go-go-go-go...go..." all the way across. There are cars and auto rickshaws coming at us from every direction and our only hope for survival is to keep moving. Red Fort Firing Squad
2007-06-21 01:05:00 This is a story from my recent Journey in IndiaDelhi India, January 9, 2007 This is the 'Red Fort '. It was built by the same man who had the Taj Mahal built. As Ayako, Aw and I approach the fort, a smiling Hindu woman grabs hold of me and pins a small Indian flag on my shirt. "Welcome" she says. "We represent the schools of Delhi..." but before she can finish her spiel, I smile back and thank her for the greeting and walk own. She starts yelling: "we want donation..." but I just wave and keep walking. This is the way here in India. Everyone seems to have an agenda. Everything costs money. Even a smile. I am learning to command my own space and not be pushed around by the constant demands on me from so many people looking for a handout. The three of us laugh as we ignore the woman who still tries to get my attention. We pay 200 rupees each ($6 CAD) and approach the entrance only to find there is a soldier pointing a rifle at us. We feel like the guests of honor at a firing squad.... More About: Quad , Squad
Delhi Sikh Temple
2007-06-19 01:04:00 This is a story from my recent Journey in IndiaDelhi India, January 9, 2007 Poor Ayako san. She spent yesterday in bed, sick as a dog from remnants of her food poisoning in Varanasi. But she was determined to join us for a day of sight-seeing. The temperature today is about five degrees so she's bundled up and trying to stay warm. This is the Delhi Sikh Temp le . It's the same design as the Golden Temple in Amritsar. it's just smaller. We pick up these head scarves at the entrance. Everyone must cover their head before entering the courtyard. The water in the reflecting pool has been shipped in from Amritsar as well. We see many Sikh men walk into the frigid water in a way similar to a baptism. I admire their stamina. This is a nice place to visit and I like the marble walkway and the design of the temple but I find myself wondering how I will feel when I see the original Temple in the Punjab. As we are leaving, one we put our our hands and have the sacred waters poured over them.
Hiding Out In Little Tibet
2007-06-17 18:55:00 Delhi India, January 7, 2007This is a story from my recent Journey in India Aw and I are very thankful to Joanmarie for suggesting we begin our exploration of Delhi in 'Manjuka Tilla' or 'Tibet New Colony'. When the Chinese murdered the Tibetan people and began systematically destroying their Temples, many Tibetans were forced to flee across the border to India. Many of them came here to Delhi and were given refuge in settlements like this one. I was warned that there is very little peace in Delhi if you're looking for cheap accommodation. As we drive from the airport, we see the streets and markets packed with people and cars and cows. The city looks like a madhouse. I wanted to find a place to start this trip where Aw and I could get our bearings for a couple of days and become acclimatized to the Indian culture. If you're looking for somewhere to 'hide out', Manjuka Tilla is the place to come. This settlement is very basic and doesn't have any fancy amenities but to me... More About: Litt
Birthday With Dignity
2007-06-16 23:41:00 Last year my family had fun at my expense when they portrayed me as 'coming out of the closet' in my birthday video. The movie was degrading. The movie was embarrassing. The movie was...okay it was funny.Fortunately, my sister, Melbah Toasty, showed a little more sensitivity for my feelings this year. How To Stay Warm In Delhi
2007-06-16 21:16:00 Delhi India, January 6,2007This is a story from my recent Journey in IndiaIt's great to have a place to stay here in the Tibetan Settlement. Lonely Planet says wongdhen house is one of the best for the price; 450 rupees ($13 CAD) per night. The only problem is that the temperature here in Delhi is around freezing at night and there are no heaters in this hotel. I'm from Canada so I figure that doesn't matter cause I'm used to the cold right? The difference is that where I'm from, it's only cold outside. If you're cold in my country, you just go inside and warm up. Here in Delhi if you're cold, you just try not to think about it. You don't really appreciate heat until you try living without it. We realize we have to just suck it up and deal with the situation, so Joan Marie, our Buddhist Nun friend, gives us a pomegranate as a welcome gift and we settle into our room. This guesthouse was probably built around 1900 and the plumbing is pretty basic but at least the water in th... More About: Delhi , Stay
Ayako Comes To Delhi
2007-06-15 00:37:00 Delhi, India, January 7, 2007This story is from my recent Journey in India We're walking down the narrow street of the Tibetan settlement when we suddenly spot a young Japanese woman, huddled in a blanket, looking from side to side at the store windows around her. I shout "Ayako san!". Her head comes up and we see a beaming smile on her face. Finally we meet again. Some people really know how to get around. I first met Ayako san in Thailand. Then she visited me in Canada. So when I told Ayako I was coming to India she said 'okay Stevie, I go too'. She was in Bangkok and met Aw. Then she flew to Sri Lanka, on to Delhi, up to Nepal and back here to meet with us. Ayako looks pretty good for a woman who has just spent the last seventy-two hours sick as a dog from food poisoning in Varanasi. We go to a Tibetan restaurant and order a celebration dinner. It's a surreal experience for me to have two of my favorite people in the World, from two different countries (Thailand and Japan... More About: Delhi
Our First Delhi Meal
2007-06-13 01:07:00 Delhi India, January 6, 2007This story is from our recent Journey in IndiaThis has been a big day for Aw and me. Our driver and guide, Arun, has taken us to Raj Ghat, where Gandhi was cremated. Then we visited the famous tower; Qutub Minar. Now it's time for lunch. We tell Arun we want to eat where the locals eat, so he takes us to a rough looking little restaurant that serves Punjabi food. We are the only foreigners in this place and we get a lot of looks. But everyone is friendly and smiling as they look over to see these strange people in their midst. This one minute video is our first authentic Delhi meal since arriving in India. Aw asks Arun to give us some suggestions as to what we should eat. You can see a sink across from our table. We all take turns washing our hands before and after the meal. It is the custom to eat Indian food with your right hand. You never want to use your left hand to eat or shake another person's hand. We all really enjoy the food. We have chick... Tower Envy
2007-06-12 00:57:00 Delhi India, January 6, 2007This story is from my recent Journey in IndiaThe seven hundred year-old Qutub Minar is the tallest free standing brick structure in India. It reminds me of the leaning tower of Pizza. It is all hand carved and is deliberately tilted so that if it should ever fall, it will fall away from people. Our driver and guide; Arun says the tower has been struck by lightening several times. One time the lightning actually blew the top off it. If you look closely you can see that the top two sections are different than the rest from being rebuilt after one of the lightning strikes. The Minar has been used through history by Muslims to call the faithful to prayer. It has a circular stairway inside leading to the five balconies. There is a gate at ground-level and it's locked. People kept climbing up and throwing themselves off the top. Arun says there were six suicides in a row and so the Delhi Authorities finally stopped letting people go up. There are several bea... Mystical Bird Returns
2007-06-07 21:09:00 Waterloo, Ontario, June 8 2007My dear friend, Judy, lost her son on June 9th, 2005. Just before he died, my mom noticed a strange thing. A red-winged blackbird kept slamming himself against her kitchen window for a couple of weeks before Chris's death. I wrote about it in the post: Nature Spirits on June 7th. Day after day this bird would pelt himself against that window. At first, Mom thought it was some kind of reflection problem that was drawing this bird. She closed the blinds and made sure there were no mirrors or reflecting objects to draw the bird to that window, but nothing worked. This went on every day for two weeks. Then On June 9th, it stopped. The next day, Judy phoned to tell me her son had been found in Stanley Park. This is a photo of Chris and his mom. I flew to Vancouver a couple of weeks later and Judy and I had a Myst ic Experience with the animals. Last year at exactly the same time, the bird suddenly appeared again, but this time Mom remarked that he just fl... More About: Bird , Al B , Turn , Mystical
Baha'i Lotus
2007-06-07 03:02:00 Delhi India, January 8 2007This Story is from my recent journey in IndiaAs a Westerner, my visions of India includes the three main religions but I never thought I would find such an incredible representation from the Baha'i Faith. The Baha'is not only wanted to create a sanctuary for their followers. They also wanted to create a structure to honor India. The result is this magnificent Church in the shape of a lotus flower. The building is an open-air structure with many entrances all leading the the huge arrangement of white benches facing a central, slightly raised stage. We are asked not to take photos of the inner sanctuary. Aw and I sit on one of the lines of pews for a few minutes to get the feeling of this Temple. I have explored lots of Temples but there have only been a few that really gave me that special tingle. This is one of them. The lotus shape you see on the outside is the same inside, creating a series of high archways that remind me of a pyramid shape. I sit here... More About: Lotus
Sunday Buggies
2007-06-06 00:49:00 Waterloo, Ontario, Canada, April 29, 2007My Mom is taking me for a tour in the countryside around Waterloo, Ontario. There is a strong Mennonite community here and she wants to show me the parking lot at their prayer meeting, but we get to see a lot more than we expected.Just we were coming up to the church we were greeted by a long procession of horse-drawn buggies. Mom says she has tried for the last ten years to see what we're seeing today. We park at the side of the road as the whole community passes by our car. These coaches look ancient but the red triangle on the back gives them a futuristic look at the same time. What an amazing introduction to rural Ontario. Thanks so much for sharing this event with me, Mom. More About: Sunday , Bugg
Gandhi: Prayers In The Garden
2007-06-05 04:29:00 Delhi, India, January 6, 2007This is a story from my recent Journey in India. This our first day exploring Delhi; in fact it's our first day exploring India. Our Buddhist Nun Friend, Joanmarie got us a Taxi driver to show us around. There are a lot of unscrupulous people here so when you find a driver you can trust, you've found gold. As you can see, Arun knows how to make us feel at home, with his 'Canada' jacket. When he arrives at our 'Guest house I say: "Arun, we don't know which way is up. Just show us around". He decides that a tour of Delhi should start with one of the most sacred landmarks in India. He takes us to an enormous park in the north of the city and one of the most sacred locations in this whole country; 'Raj Ghat'. This is the place where Mahatma Gandhi was cremated on January 31st, 1948 after he was assassinated while preparing to lead prayers in the Biria House Garden . Amazing Delhi Warzone
2007-06-02 16:02:00 Delhi, India, January 5, 2007 This is a story from my recent trip to IndiaDelhi is the capital of India. This is where we start our trip. I was warned that we would be overwhelmed by the City but I don't really feel that way. Yes, there are many beggars, pushing at us and showing their mutilated body parts like strange puppet shows, to extract money. And urine and feces can be smelled in many parts of the city. And we have to stay constantly alert to thieves, Cons and Schemes. It's a War zone for sure. But then there are the most amazing people and sights all around too. As long as you remember there's a War on; everything is Okay. This is Stephanie. She was sitting on the plane next to us as we flew from Bangkok to Delhi. Height Of My Career
2007-06-01 04:30:00 Waterloo, Ontario, Canada, May 31, 2007I'm back in Waterloo Ontario, working after a great Journey in India, as well as Thailand and Cambodia. One of my Mom's bridge partners hired me to fix her roof so here I am, balancing six metres in the air on the peak of Gail's roof as I replace the cap with new shingles. I would have preferred something a little closer to the ground as my first official job, but work is work. And as a carpenter I get to see things no one else does. Here is the view from Gail's roof across to her neighbors. Just the shingles, my tool belt and my trusty camera on a hot sunny day. It's fun to be here getting my Construction business started in Ontario but it's also kind of eerie too. I lived in Alberta a long time so being here sometimes seems like a step backwards. Today I was getting quotes on a builder's liability policy and one of the agents asked: "Aren't you a little mixed up? I thought everyone was going from here to Calgary these days, not the ot... We ended up traveling together for the next month in Thailand. [Read The Story Here] Dennis was taking a year off to cycle around Asia when I met him. That might not sound so amazing until you realize that Dennis over sixty years old. We've kept in touch since then. Then last year he wrote to say he had met a woman in Siem Reap, Cambodia and that they were going to settle down together. He wants to work in Canada for a couple more years to build up a better pension before retiring in Siem Reap with his sweetie.Aw and I are here in Siem Reap right now, so I wrote Dennis on the chance he might be here right now, too. Struggle Ends For 'Natty'
2007-05-30 05:20:00 Waterloo, Ontario, Canada, May 29, 2007This is a difficult time for my extended family in Bangkok. My girlfriend, Aw just told me that her 'younger brother' Natty ' has died. He was battling brain cancer for the past two years. Aw is crying just now on the phone but she says they she is happy for Natty because the pain is finally over. Two days ago he suffered a heart attack and was rushed to the hospital where he remained in Intensive care until his death. This is the last photo I took of Natty. We were celebrating Songkran; the water festival, and he had a great time; shooting squirt-guns at his family while being smeared with white powder. Aw and I took Natty to the movies a couple of days later and sat on either side of him as we watched one of the most powerful and violent movies I have ever seen; 'The 300'; a movie about the Spartan warriors of ancient Greece. Natty kept turning to me during the movie, smiling and enjoying the action as he munched popcorn. He loved video g... More About: Ends

I miss Thailand a lot so I'm excited to go.When we arrive I feel like a stalker as I hunt for some unsuspecting victim to practice my Thai on. A lovely woman takes us to our table. She doesn't look 'Thai' to me but I give it a shot anyway. "Sawadee krup" I blurt out to her. "Oh nice to meet you" she replies. It turns out Lily is from Northern China; not Thailand. We get talking and find out that she is living with a Chinese family here in Etobicoke (a suburb of Toronto) but is looking for a place of her own, or at least a place to share that would give her more space. Before you know it, Lily and Vivyan are talking about sharing Vivyan's place. Vivyan and I start to feel guilty because Lily stays at our table, talking for twenty minutes even though she's on duty. Mike’s been writing for radio for a long time and when he teams up with Terry O’Reilly, the combination is Magic.Mike and Terry met years ago while Mike was doing freelance work for CHUM Radio. But no worries; she gives as good as she gets.Right in the middle of our fun, we have a line of police vehicles pass through with lights flashing. The police are great. Blogging The Blog

I love having a Mentor who can save me some of the learning curve. It gives me more time to write and take photos and Movies rather than trying to figure out the thousand and one details needed to create and maintain a blog.I work as a carpenter in the REAL world, so blogging is a wonderful diversion from the construction business.
