Garrett Putnam Serviss
2008-02-29 00:00:00 Some of the earliest Science Fiction books were written by Garrett Putnam Serviss.Garrett Putnam Serviss (1851-1929) was an astronomer, popularizer of astronomy, and early science fiction writer. Serviss was born in upstate New York, and majored in science at Cornell. He took a law degree at Columbia, but never worked as an attorney. Instead, in 1876 he joined the staff of the New York Sun newspaper, working as a journalist until 1892 under editor Charles Dana. Serviss showed a talent for explaining scientific details in a way that made them clear to the ordinary reader, leading Andrew Carnegie to invite him to deliver The Urania Lectures on cosmology, astronomy, geology, and related matters. With Carnegie's financial backing, these lectures were illustrated with magic lantern slides and other effects to show eclipses, presumed lunar landscapes, and much else. Serviss toured the United States for over two years delivering these lectures, then settling down to become a popular speak...

The Image Of Bruce Lee
2008-02-12 00:00:00 The Image of Bruce Lee was originally released in Hong Kong as Meng nan da zei yan zhi hu (Internation English title: Storming Attacks), although the Bruceploitation title was added for its American release. On the website Bruceploitation, 'Keith' more or less sums up the appeal of the film by writing: "Oh yeah kung fu carnage and gratuitous full frontal nudity, with a formula that like that you can't go wrong! I liked this movie it was cool. Every five minutes somebody was getting in a fight except one time, but that was a part with the nudity, so that makes up for it. Watch this movie if you can cuz it's good." Download The Image Of Bruce Lee

A Boy And His Dog
2008-02-12 00:00:00 A Boy and His Dog is a 1975 post-apocalyptic science fiction film directed by L. Q. Jones and based on the Harlan Ellison short story of the same title, which originally appeared in 1969. A revised and expanded version was printed in Ellison's 1976 story collection The Beast that Shouted Love at the Heart of the World, and Ellison continued the story in the graphic novel Vic and Blood. The film version is often cited as an inspiration for George Miller's Mad Max though Miller has said he didn't view Jones' film until after he had completed his own. The movie was also distributed after the initial run under the name, "Psycho Boy and His Killer Dog" among other titles. This is a post-apocalyptic tale in which the earth's surface is devastated by nuclear war, and the few survivors who stayed above ground must forage and fight for food, ammo, and women. Of these necessities, women are the rarest finds; as explained in the movie, most survivors are male because while the males were o...
Hercules Film Festival
2008-02-09 00:00:00 In Greek mythology, Heracles or Herakles ("glory of Hera", or "Glorious through Hera," was a divine hero, the son of Zeus and Alcmene, nephew of Amphitryon and great-grandson of Perseus. He was the greatest of the Greek heroes, a paragon of masculinity, the ancestor of royal clans who claimed to be Heracleidae and a champion of the Olympian order against chthonic monsters. In Rome and the modern West, he is known as Hercules , with whom the later Roman Emperors, in particular Commodus and Maximianus, often identified themselves. The Romans adopted the Greek version of his life and works essentially unchanged, but added anecdotal detail of their own, some of it linking the hero with the geography of the Central Mediterranean. Details of his cult were adapted to Rome as well.Extraordinary strength, courage, ingenuity, and sexual prowess with both males and females were among his characteristic attributes. Although he was not as clever as the likes of Odysseus or Nestor, Heracles used h... More About: Film , Festival , Film Festival
Of Human Bondage
2008-02-07 00:00:00 The 1934 film Of Human Bondage was the first film adaptation of the 1915 novel of the same name by the British author W. Somerset Maugham. The novel Of Human Bondage is a strongly autobiographical work that, although it is in itself a work of fiction, draws several of its scenes directly from the life of its author. The 1934 film was the first film to bring real critical success to its star Bette Davis, who would later refer to her acting career in terms of two stages - "before Maugham" and "after Maugham".The tragic adaptation about a crippled doctor's destructive and compulsive passion for a coarse waitress was advertised with the tagline on one of its posters: "The Love That Lifted a Man to Paradise...and Hurled Him Back to Earth Again." The melodramatic film was remade in 1946 with Eleanor Parker and Paul Henreid, and again in 1964 with Kim Novak and Laurence Harvey. This film is mostly known because Bette Davis' star-making, over-the-top, theatrical performance was passed over ...
Teenagers From Outer Space
2008-02-06 00:00:00 Teenagers from Outer Space is a 1959 science-fiction B-movie about an extraterrestrial ship landing on Earth to use it as a farm for its food supply. The crew of the ship includes several teenagers (who ironically look quite old for teenagers), two of whom oppose each other in their activities. The independent film was originally distributed by Warner Brothers.Teenagers from Outer Space was filmed on location in and around Hollywood, California, with a number of tell-tale landmarks like Bronson Canyon in Griffith Park and Hollywood High School giving away the film's hazy locale. One notable aspect of the film is that it was largely the work of a single person, Tom Graeff (1929-1970), who, in addition to playing the role of reporter Joe Rogers, wrote, directed, edited, and produced the film, on which he also provided cinematography, special effects, and music coordination. Producers Bryan and Ursula Pearson ("Thor" and "Hilda") and Gene Sterling ("The Leader") provided the film's $... More About: Teenagers

It deals with the extermination camp at Sobibór, the site of the most successful uprising by Jewish prisoners of German extermination camps (there were two other uprisings, at Auschwitz and Treblinka). The film was directed by Jack Gold.On October 14th, 1943, members of the camp's underground resistance succeeded in covertly killing eleven SS and a number of Ukrainian guards. Svengali
2008-01-31 00:00:00 Svengali (1931) is a drama/horror film starring John Barrymore, Marian Marsh, and Bramwell Fletcher, directed by Archie Mayo, written by J. Grubb Alexander, and released by Warner Brothers. It is based on the gothic horror novel Trilby (1894) by George du Maurier. The film was originally released on May 22, 1931. When a pupil he has seduced announces she has left her husband for him, he uses his powers to cause her suicide and promptly forgets her. Faust
2008-01-31 00:00:00 Faust is a classic silent film produced in 1926 by UFA, directed by F.W. Murnau, starring Gösta Ekman as Faust, Emil Jannings as Mephisto, Camilla Horn as Gretchen/Marguerite, Frida Richard as her mother, Wilhelm Dieterle as her brother and Yvette Guilbert as Marthe Schwerdtlein, her aunt. Murnau's film draws on older traditions of the legendary tale of Faust as well as on Goethe's classic version. This carefully composed and innovative feature contains many memorable images and special effects, with careful attention paid to contrasts of light and dark. Particularly striking is the sequence in which the giant, horned and black winged figure of Mephisto (Jannings) hovers over a town sowing the seeds of plague. The acting by Ekman (who miraculously transforms, in the course of the film, from a bearded old man to a handsome youth) and the sinister, scowling, demonic Jannings is first rate and the virtually unknown actress Camilla Horn gives a memorable performance as the tragic figur...

Moreover the themes of violence, sense of claustrophobia and despair, mark the film as completely amoral, and, as such, Suddenly is quite opposite of non-noir films like The Desperate Hours (1955).The film received good reviews from the cri... 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 |
