Mr. Arkadin
2007-12-12 00:00:00 Mr. Arkadin is a film written and directed by Orson Welles. Its history is quite convoluted; the story was based on an episode of the radio series The Lives of Harry Lime, which in turn was based on the character Welles portrayed in The Third Man. In addition, several different versions of the film were released. Jonathan Rosenbaum's essay "The Seven Arkadins" is an attempt to detail the different versions including the novel and radio play. Adding to the confusion is a novel of the same title that was credited to Welles; Welles claimed the book was only ghostwritten with Maurice Bessy. In 1982 Welles described it as the 'biggest disaster' of his life, due to him losing creative control of the film.Small time smuggler Guy Van Stratten is at the scene of a murder, and the dying man whispers two names that he claims are very valuable, one of which is Gregory Arkadin. Using this small bit of information and lots of bluffing, Van Stratten manages to meet the apparent multi-millionair... More About: Kadi

Meet John Doe
2007-12-12 00:00:00 Meet John Doe is a 1941 comedy drama film directed and produced by Frank Capra and starring Gary Cooper and Barbara Stanwyck. The film, about a "grassroots" political campaign, created unwittingly by a newspaper columnist and pursued by a wealthy businessman, became a box office hit and was nominated for an Academy Award for best original story (for Richard Connell and Robert Presnell Sr.).Though the film is less well known than other Capra classics, it remains highly regarded today. It was ranked #49 in AFI's 100 Years... 100 Cheers.Gary Cooper was always Frank Capra's first choice to play John Doe . Cooper agreed to the part without reading a script for two reasons: he had enjoyed working with Capra on Mr. Deeds Goes to Town (1936) and he wanted to work with Barbara Stanwyck. The role of the hardbitten news reporter, however, was initially offered to Ann Sheridan and Olivia de Havilland.Infuriated at being laid off from her job as a newspaper columnist, Ann Mitchell (Barbara Stan... Fire Pro Wrestling Returns for PS2 Review
2007-12-06 00:00:00 Fire Pro Wrestling is an extremely popular series of games originating from Japan. Fire Pro Wrestling Returns has the distinction of having an extensive pedigree of being the latst title from a very long list of games in the series. In the Fire Pro series of games (spanning over fifteen years) each game uses the same game play mechanics of the previous, with improvements where they are needed. Unlike other series' of wrestling games, with the Fire Pro series the developers have a working, user friendly game system that remains basically the same from game to game.My first experience with the Fire Pro Wrestling series was Fire Pro Wrestling S Six Men Scramble, which was released in 1996 on the Sega Saturn. Back then fans of the series had to wade through 70 pages of guides and translations made by other fans. I'll take this moment to pay homage to one fan in particular who I believe is responsible for the popularity of the series among importers, The Mysterious Kagura, I have no id... Nethack for the DS
2007-12-06 00:00:00 NetHack is a single-player roguelike computer game originally released in 1987. It is an evolution of an earlier game called Hack (1985), which was an evolution of Rogue (1980). The "net" element references that its development has been coordinated through the Internet. The "hack" element refers to a genre of role-playing games known as hack and slash for their focus on combat. The player takes the part of a dungeon-diving character in search of the Amulet of Yendor. The dungeon spans over 50 levels, most of which are randomly generated.NetHack is open source and one of the oldest computer games still being actively developed, with new features and bug fixes regularly being added by a loose but secretive group of volunteer developers, commonly called the DevTeam.NetHack is traditionally played using text mode graphics where the dungeon's features, inhabitants, and items are all represented by single ASCII characters. There are also several graphical user interfaces available for th...
Damon and Pythias
2007-12-06 00:00:00 In Greek mythology, the legend of Damon and Pythias (or Phintias) symbolizes trust and loyalty in a true friendship. As told by Aristoxenus, and after him Cicero and others, around the 4th century BCE, Pythias and his friend Damon, both followers of the philosopher Pythagoras, traveled to Syracuse. Pythias was accused of plotting against the tyrant of Syracuse, Dionysius I. As punishment for this crime, Pythias was sentenced to death.Accepting his sentence, Pythias asked to be allowed to return home one last time, to settle his affairs and bid his family farewell. Not wanting to be taken for a fool, Dionysius refused, believing that once released, Pythias would flee and never return.Risking his own freedom for his best friend, Damon proposed that Dionysius hold him hostage until Pythias returned. Dionysius agreed, on the condition that, should Pythias not return when promised, Damon would be put to death in his place. Damon agreed, and Pythias was released.Dionysius was convinced tha...
David and Goliath
2007-12-06 00:00:00 This 1960 Italian film David and Goliath, starring Orson Welles is a straightforward adaptation of the original Biblical story. This is the account of the battle between David and Goliath given in 1 Samuel, chapter 17:Saul and the Israelites are facing the Philistines at Socoh. Each day Goliath, the champion of the Philistines, comes out between the lines and challenges the Israelites to send out their own champion to decide the outcome in single combat, but Saul and all the Israelites are afraid. NDS Homebrew Game Release Powder v.92
2007-11-28 00:00:00 This is my absolute favorite NDS homebrew game... To understand POWDER, you should first understand Roguelikes. "Roguelike" is a term applied to a wide variety of games which share a common inspiration from the game Rogue. A non-exhaustive list of such games would be: ADOM, Nethack, Diablo (I & II), Moria, and Angband. My apologies to the many excellent roguelikes I didn't list. What characterizes these games? The exact specifications are a matter of debate - indeed, I may receive hate mail for including Diablo - but I shall try to write a few:* Tactical play. The unit of action is based on the individual adventurer. The game is not twitch oriented (like Quake, rewarding reflexes & well trained actions) nor is it strategy oriented (like Civilizations or Warcraft, requiring working on the large picture)* Based in Hack and Slash. A roguelike isn't primarily about plot development or telling a story. It is about killing things and acquiring treasure.* Random games. A roguelike is ... More About: Game , Release , Homebrew

Cooking Mama 2 Review
2007-11-22 00:00:00 Cooking Mama 2: Dinner with Friends is the second DS game in the Cooking Mama series. Cooking Mama can best be described as a cross between Wario Ware and Rachel Ray, with a little more Rachel than Wario in the mix. Basically the underlying game of Cooking Mama is a series of mini games composed to simulate cooking a meal.In fact, the sheer amount of mini games is staggering (over 150), and it would need to be to b able to fix all of the 80 plus recipes. The recipes are entertaining to fix, as well as informative as well. With such a wide variety of recipes it wouldn't be difficult to imagine making macaroons, lobster, chili dogs, escargot, California rolls, seafood salad, shark fin soup, meatloaf, ice cream, and bananas foster all in one session of the game. There are four game play modes included this time around:Cook with Mama: Even if you make mistakes Mama will help you complete the recipe so you can continue cooking. Let?s Cook: You?re on your own without Mama?s help. Now ... More About: Cooking , Review , Cooking Mama 2 , Cookin
Dick Tracy Movies
2007-11-21 00:00:00 There are four Dick Tracy RKO feature films, starting with Dick Tracy (aka Dick Tracy, Detective) (1945). This was followed by Dick Tracy vs. Cueball in 1946 and Dick Tracy's Dilemma in 1947. Perhaps the best known of the films was the last, Dick Tracy Meets Gruesome, with the titlular villain portrayed by Boris Karloff. The first two films starred Morgan Conway, while in the later two Ralph Byrd reprised his role as Dick Tracy. These four movies had many of the visual features associated with film noir. Dick Tracy: DetectiveDick Tracy (Morgan Conway), a supremely intelligent police detective, must solve a series of brutal murders in which the victims, all from different social and economic backgrounds, are viciously slashed to pieces by the one known as Splitface. Suspects flourish but Tracy must find the common link of extortion and revenge before more are killed.Download Dick Tracy: Detective Dick Tracy Meets Gruesome Dick Tracy Meets Gruesome (also known as Dick Tracy Meets Ka... Fish Tycoon Review
2007-11-21 00:00:00 Fish Tycoon is the latest in the category of PC ports to the Nintendo DS. Fish Tycoon however is not shovelware, and I believe it is one of the best casual game ports from the PC to the DS to date. To review Fish Tycoon for the DS I really must tell you the credentials of the PC title. Fish Tycoon for the PC is an extremely successful casual game, which blends themes and elements from several popular genres. Not only can you raise the fish, you also collect them, and sell them in a store. So not only do you have a pet sim, you have a collecting game and also a business simulation in one The PC title was so successful that it also won the 2006 iParenting Media Award, and was ranked in the top ten best selling casual games for 2006. So needless to say, Fish Tycoon comes from good stock. Now I shall discuss some of the features that makes this already great game even better. One thing you need for a 'virtual aquarium' is fish. Fish Tycoon has fish by the boatload! Seven exclus... More About: Fish , Review
Under Capricorn
2007-11-21 00:00:00 Under Capricorn (1949) is an Alfred Hitchcock film based on a novel by Helen Simpson, with screenplay written by James Bridie, and adaptation by Hume Cronyn. The movie was co-produced by Hitchcock and Sidney Bernstein for their short-lived production company Transatlantic Pictures and released through Warner Bros. The film starred Ingrid Bergman, Joseph Cotten, Michael Wilding, and Margaret Leighton. The film was Hitchcock's second film in Technicolor and uses ten-minute takes similar to those in Hitchcock's film Rope (1948). The film's failure, partly due to its slowness, and partly due to the adverse publicity of Bergman's extramarital affair with film director Roberto Rossellini, led Hitchcock and Bernstein to dissolve Transatlantic Pictures. * Alfred Hitchcock cameo: A signature occurrence in almost all of Hitchcock's films, he can be seen in the town square during a parade, wearing a blue coat and brown hat at the beginning of the film. He is also one of three men on the... More About: Apricorn
Cosmos War of the Planets
2007-11-18 00:00:00 Cosmos: War of the Planets (Italian: Battaglie negli spazi stellari) is an Italian film directed by Alfonso Brescia and starring John Richardson, released in 1977. It is known for its nonsensical plot, unintentionally comical dialogue, and terrible camera work. The film begins with the crew of a spaceship seeing explosions in space and asteroids flying by. They are afraid that they are going to be hit, but their ship's computer, named Wiz, tells them that they were seeing the "refraction" of an event that took place millions of years ago. Overjoyed, the ship's crew hug and kiss each other.Next follows a scene within the Orion space complex (whose introduction includes stock footage of the Japanese space launch center) of Captain Mike Hamilton's slapping a fellow officer. Soon he is called to report on this behavior to the base commander. He says that the other officer did not give him a command personally, but told him to follow the directions of a computer. Alfred Hitchcock Films
More articles from this author:2007-11-16 00:00:00 Sir Alfred Joseph Hitchcock KBE (August 13, 1899 ? April 29, 1980) was an iconic and highly influential British-born film director and producer who pioneered many techniques in the suspense and thriller genres. He directed more than fifty feature films in a career spanning six decades, from the silent film era, through the invention of talkies, to the colour era. Hitchcock was among the most consistently successful and publicly recognizable world directors during his lifetime, and remains one of the best known and most popular of all time.Famous for his expert and largely unrivalled control of pace and suspense, Hitchcock's films draw heavily on both fear and fantasy, and are known for their droll humour and witticisms. They often portray innocent people caught up in circumstances beyond their control or understanding.Hitchcock was born and raised in Leytonstone, London, England.
