Xbox 360 price cut coming on 8 August
2007-07-27 04:57:00
Rumours suggest $50 reduction Rumours have it that the Xbox 360 in the States is going to be getting a widely anticipated price cut on 8th August . This moves is an effort to "regain momentum" in the gaming market following Sony's price-cut fueled sales boom, Nintedo's ever improving Wii figures and the 360's recent bad press after the "red ring of death" technical problems. "Sources" have said that Microsoft will cut the price of the Xbox 360 by $50, but it's unclear is this will be all models or just the $299 Core model. This timing is plausible - it will coincide with the launch of some new top titles for the console, such as "Madden NFL 08", and also reach consumers before the Leipzig Games Convention "fireworks" that Sony has promised for the PS3 later in the month. In a PR-tastic response, a Microsoft spokesperson said: "We have no announcements to make on pricing at this time. While price matters, content is king". Other recent rumours concerning Xbox 360 pricing pegged th...

No Spiderman: Friend of Foe For PS3
2007-07-27 04:42:00
Activision has recently announced the new Spider-Man: Friend or Foe for multiple consoles including the Xbox 360 and Wii but unfortunately no PS3 version was announced. The new Spider-Man game from Activision is called Friend or Foe and the information revealed about the game shows that it is in development for the Xbox 360, Wii, PS2, PSP, NDS, and PC.Unfortunately though there is no word on the PS3 version of the game in any capacity so it can be assumed that there is no PS3 version in development at this point. It seems that Spider-Man: Friend or Foe may go web-slinging right past the PS3 and on just about every other console.

The Week in Video-Game News
2007-07-26 02:26:00
_FACE THE MUSIC: At this year's E3 Media & Business Summit, the influence of one game _ "Guitar Hero" _ was inescapable. Naturally, Activision's forthcoming "Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock" drew a lot of attention. Its new highlights include a multiplayer battle mode and head-to-head face-offs against "boss" players like former Guns N' Roses guitarist Slash. But the studio that created "GH" has moved on to Electronic Arts' and MTV Game s' "Rock Band." Crowds lined up at EA's E3 suite for hands-on time with "Rock Band," which adds bass, drums and vocals to the "GH" formula. Developer Harmonix is promising new downloadable tunes _ and even full albums, starting with The Who's "Who's Next" _ every week. Metallica will be making some of its most popular tracks available, and Steven Van Zandt will help Harmonix pick new songs. At least half a dozen other games this fall are trying to recreate some of that "Guitar Hero" magic. Disney's "Hannah Montana Music Jam" and Ubisoft's "J...

Sony claims huge sales bump after PS3 price cut
2007-07-26 02:04:00
Sony claims that Playstation 3 sales have increased by more than 135% at the company's top five retailers since they announced a $100 price drop for the 60 gigabyte PS3 on July 9th.They also say that Playstation hardware sales have increased by 161%, software by 15% and peripherals by 60%."The new price on the 60 GB PS3, coupled with our very strong software showing from E3, is certainly paying dividends in terms of impressive sales across the board at retail," says SCEA head Jack Tretton. "This jump in sales bodes very well for us heading into the fall as we launch an impressive arsenal of hardware and software, leading off with the new 80 GB PS3 in August along with the unveiling of highly anticipated games such as Lair and Warhawk. That will be followed by Heavenly Sword in September and six more exclusive first-party PS3 games in October, including Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction." The Nintendo Wii led the way in the console sales race last month, selling 381,80...

Wii Has More Exclusives Than PS3, Xbox 360
2007-07-26 01:49:00
A new report has come out which shows that the Nintendo Wii has more exclusive games on the horizon than the Xbox 360 as well as the PS3.The new study was released in a report which looked at the exclusive games coming out for the three major consoles, the Sony PlayStation 3, Nintendo Wii, and Microsoft Xbox 360 coming out of E3 2007.In the report for a game to be console exclusive it has to only appear on one of those three home consoles. It may appear though on portables as well as the PC. The list is only of formally announces games for North America and downloadable games were not included. The report revealed that the Nintendo Wii has 113 exclusive games in development. This compared to 96 for the Xbox 360 and only 47 for the PlayStation 3. The Sony PS3 is clearly behind in this category. The Wii now dominates after the Xbox 360 held the top spot for almost 10 months.
Xbox 360 Sales Down an Unexpected 61%
2007-07-24 03:10:00
In the Microsoft Earnings statement last week, the Entertainment and Devices Division revealed that they had a loss of $1.16 billion thanks to flagging Xbox sales. Instead of shipping 1.8 million Xbox 360 s like they did in the fourth quarter of 2006, they shipped 700,000, which is a dramatic fall-off this early into a console's life cycle. What gives? It's definitely not a lack of games, seeing as the Xbox 360 has a much higher library of titles to choose from compared with both the PlayStation 3 and the Wii. The two factors we can point to are one, the faulty hardware that led to a three year warranty from Microsoft, and two, the fact that both the Wii and the PS3 weren't on the market yet this time last year. Both combine together to push down sales of the 360 into six digits. We'll see if Microsoft can pull itself out of this one when Halo 3 comes calling.

Hot games coming soon
2007-07-24 03:05:00
The focus of this year's E3 Media and Business Summit in Santa Monica, Calif., was the hundreds of video games that will be debuting in the coming months and years. The Xbox 360 game "Halo 3" got the spotlight, but other upcoming titles also shone brightly at the video-game expo. Here's a sampling:"Assassin's Creed" Ubisoft's newest action franchise drops a stealthy killing machine named Altair, who can scamper up walls and fling himself across rooftops, into the middle of the Third Crusade in medieval Jerusalem. Of course, he has lethal fighting moves, too. Due in November for the Xbox 360, PS3 and PC."Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare" Infinity Ward updates its acclaimed first-person shooter franchise with laser scopes, deadly radiation and other byproducts of modern war. The game takes hyper-realism to a new level with smooth, razor-sharp graphics and a steady stream of intense, cinematic battle moments. Due later this year for the Xbox 360, PS3 and PC."Killzone 2" The graphics ...

Gaming, Nintendo big in 2007
2007-07-24 02:50:00
Console sales up a 44% at $6.1 billionThis is shaping up to be a big year for the videogame biz -- and a huge year for Nintendo .Industry tracker NPD Group released domestic sales data for the first half of 2007 on Monday, showing that console sales are up a boffo 44%, to $6.1 billion, while game sales rose a healthy 24% to $2.9 billion.A big chunk of that growth is being driven by Nintendo, whose Wii is handily outselling the other next-gen consoles, Sony's Playstation 3 and Microsoft's Xbox 360. Its DS, meanwhile, is obliterating the other handheld vidgame console, Sony's PSP, and is the top-selling vidgame device overall. In addition, Nintendo claimed six of the 10 bestselling games for the first half of the year, all published by the Japanese vidgame giant for its own DS and Wii.Wii actually outsold the 360 and PS3 combined in the U.S. in the first six months of 2007, according to NPD, putting 2.1 million units in the hands of consumers compared with just over 2 million for the...

Sony's new PSP is slimmer, includes video output
2007-07-22 04:56:00
It's not quite the PSP 2 some might've hoped for, but Sony is giving its handheld console a serious refresh in the form of a slimmer, lighter and faster "updated" PSP. The new unit still includes the 4.3-inch LCD and UMD, but is 33 percent lighter, 19 percent slimmer, has sped up game load times and improved battery life. The only real "new" features is a video output capability to allow you to play your PSP games on a big screen TV. You can score one in September in the original Piano Black, a new Ice Silver color, and a Star Wars Battlefront special edition. The latter two PSPs come in $199 bundles with related games and a 1GB Memory Stick in the case of Ice Silver. More pics after the break.Update: Also worth noting is the fact that this new model "is equipped with enhanced feature to temporarily store game data from UMD, reducing load time during game play." No complaints about that!

Leaked 'PSP Slim' manual reveals fresh tweaks
2007-07-22 04:26:00
With a month to go before Sony's slimmed down second-generation PSP hits the shops, reports have already begun circulating about less cosmetic changes to the console's design, including a battery adjustment among other tweaks.A manual purportedly covering Sony's new PSP - aka the PSP-2000 - shows that the console's WLAN switch has been moved from the side, a location which often caused gamers' hands to knock the switch on and off. Apparently the switch is now on the top of the console, alongside the USB connector.Battery life on the slimmed down PSP may also have been extended as well, with the manual pics apparently showing that battery life for game play is between three and six hours, while for video playback it is between three and five hours. That's pretty much what the currenty model, the PSP-1000, offers. However, the new battery's rating has been downgraded from 1800mAh to 1200mAh, so Sony seems to be getting as much life out of the slimmer battery as it was from the ...

New PlayStation Portable ready to launch
2007-07-22 04:09:00
The E3 Media & Business Summit in Santa Monica this week saw Sony announce the new slimmer PSP, now they have dated its release, initially in Japan.Obviously the PSP has been in the Gym lately as Sony have redesigned it to be 19 percent slimmer and 33 percent lighter. The new PSP touts faster UMD load times and a TV-out facility that will enable playing of games as well as media content on the "big screen"Sony have also announced the launch date of September 20 for the Japanese market at 19,800 yen (US$162 AU$185) Pundits cannot help comparing the PSP with rival Nintendo's DS hand-held gaming machines, but in many ways the PSP is a true hand held multi-media gadget that sets itself asside from pure gamine comparisons. Price is obviously a factor, but a new reworking of the PSP architecture should help sales.

Movie downloads to PS3, PSP not far away
2007-07-22 04:06:00
At the E3 Media and Business Summit, Sony rolled out a slimmed down PSP. This started tongues wagging about what else could happen with the PSP, well it seems that movie downloads are just over the horizon. In an interview with Gamasutra this weekend past, senior VP of marketing for PlayStation Peter Dille dropped a few hints about online video content for PS3 and PSP."I think what might convince (people who haven’t picked up a PSP) would be the advent of a service that allows them to put content onto the PSP in an easier fashion," said Dille. "There’s been a lot of speculation about when we’ll offer our video download service on PSP or PS3, and I think that could be more of a killer application to get people off the fence."No specific announcements were forthcoming, Sony seem to be more wary of producing too many details too early now. From the article; "We didn’t have any announcements about that at the show, but what I can tell you is we’re working on it, we see that it...

Firaxis explains lack of Civ PSP
2007-07-21 03:53:00
Firaxis chose not to do a PSP version of Civilization Revolution because it didn't have the resources necessary to complete that in addition to Xbox 360, PS3, Wii and DS versions, all of which are being handled in-house."The reason the Wii version is in [autumn 2008] is because we realised that we could free up enough guys to do it, but we don't have enough guys to then do a PSP version as well," Firaxis' Barry Caudill told Eurogamer. The other versions are due out in the spring."It's not like we're dissing the platform - I use a PSP. We put Pirates out on it, or rather we had Full Fat do it. But see this one, the difference here is we're doing all of these in-house and so for PSP we may have to - if it was going to come out in a timely fashion - we may have to farm it out. But right now we're just doing all these in-house and that's the official word," Caudill explained. So, ditch your conspiracy theories. We'll have more on Civilization Revolution, which looked extremely h...

In Battle of Consoles, Nintendo Gains Allies
2007-07-21 02:52:00
In the competition among the makers of video game consoles, momentum is building for the Wii from Nintendo among its crucial allies: game developers and publishers.Skip to next paragraph Ann Johansson for The New York TimesGuy Cocker plays with the Wii video game console July 11 at E3, the video-game industry’s annual trade show in Santa Monica, Calif. Inspired by the early success of the Wii, the companies that create and distribute games are beginning to shift resources and personnel toward building more Wii games, in some cases at the expense of the competing systems: the PlayStation 3 from Sony and Xbox 360 from Microsoft. The shift is closely watched because consumers tend to favor systems that have many compelling games. More resources diverted to the Wii would mean more games, and that would translate into more consumers buying Wii consoles later.Jon Goldman, chairman and chief executive of Foundation 9 Entertainment, an independent game development company, said that he wa...

Microsoft's earnings slashed due to Xbox 360 repair costs
2007-07-20 04:12:00
Microsoft's Xbox 360 repair costs eroded large gains made by new Windows and Office Software, according to their earnings report released today. If not for the Xbox 360 's extended warranty, Microsoft would have posted $0.39 in diluted earnings per share, a 26% increase over the same period last year. Instead, the console accounted for a $0.08 drop in diluted earnings per share, leaving Microsoft 21% short of their estimates. According to Microsoft, the repairs are expected to cost the company over $1 billion in this year alone. Microsoft's games division has been lagging ever since they released the first Xbox back in 2001. Since then, the company has lost over $5 billion on the division, attempting to battle gaming giants Sony and Nintendo. The division's VP Peter Moore has also left for greener pastures signing on to be president of EA's sports division. Despite all the bad news, the Xbox 360 still leads the worldwide home console sales race, selling 11.6 million consoles to ...

David Perry: Gamers Will Abandon the Wii
2007-07-20 03:01:00
David Perry , who you might remember from that community-made MMO he's working on for Acclaim, doesn't seem to think that the Wii has much staying power. In an interview with Disposable Media, Perry explains that gamers may be infatuated with the Wii now, but once something shiny (pardon the pun) comes along, they'll drop Nintendo's console like a bad habit: But I also think that the 360 and PS3’s graphical power is essential in attracting the Wii’s userbase. The fact is, gamers are attracted to beautiful looking games, they always have been...When a game comes out - a game like a Halo or something, something they haven’t seen before - they’ll drop everything and they’ll drop their Wii controllers when it does.Perry goes on to say that we've yet to really see what the PS3 has to offer: The PS3 has incredible processing power, but it’s difficult to programme for, so a lot of the titles that shipped at launch didn’t really show off the PS3’s capabilities. In fact, ...

Microsoft gives details on Xbox 360 flaws
2007-07-19 02:50:00
Microsoft has revealed details about the problems suffered by its Xbox 360 consoles, and the reasons for its recent warranty extension.Speaking exclusively to vnunet.com Chris Lewis, regional vice president of Xbox EMEA, said that the so-called 'three red light problem' is triggered, not by a single fault, but by a combination of factors that would not affect all machines."There are a number of issues that are related to this problem. It is not a single flaw," he explained."The three red lights come from not just one problem, but the manifestation of a number of issues. It is only when a number of issues collaborate that the fault occurs."Lewis declined to detail the exact cause of the problem. However, it appears to be a hardware rather than software flaw, since any fix will not be retrofitted to existing machines.Microsoft confirmed that the warranties on Xboxes were being extended for three years, but only to deal with this specific problem.

Xbox exec attacks Sony's PS3 Japan sales
2007-07-18 05:33:00
Peter Moore, VP exec for Microsoft Corp.'s Xbox game unit attacked Sony Corp.'s Playstation business in Japan this week in an interview with consumer site GameDaily BIZ.When asked about the importance of Japan in the worldwide video game war, he diverted to the lower-than-expected sales for the Playstation 3 in the region."That's probably a better question for Sony who's getting outsold by what, 6-to-1?," he said."You can bet that Sony built a long-term business plan about being successful in Japan and that business plan is crumbling."While Sony's PS3 Japan sales are below expectations, Microsoft has yet to make a reasonable dent in the market. Its Xbox 360 has sold only 122,565 units this year in Japan compared to the PS3 at 503,554 and Nintendo Co.'s Wii at 1.78 million. However, Moore said his business plan did not account for strong sales in Japan, a region that has been notoriously difficult for the company to sell video game consoles."I built a business plan, but I don't...

Xbox Ringleader Peter Moore Bolts From Microsoft, Lands at EA Sports
2007-07-18 05:26:00
Peter Moore steps down from his position at Microsoft This morning we reported that Peter Moore had more than a few words for Sony and the sales performance of the PlayStation 3 in Japan. Moore was asked about the poor sales of the Xbox 360 in Japan and instead decided to take the opportunity to go full bore at the Wii's 6-to-1 sales advantage over the PS3.Just a few hours later, Microsoft reported that Moore stepped down as Microsoft Corporate Vice President of Interactive Entertainment. Former Electronics Arts president Don Mattrick was appointed to take his place.“Peter has contributed enormously to the games business since joining Microsoft in 2003 and we are sad to see him go,” said Robbie Bach, president of Entertainment and Devices Division at Microsoft. “Since that time, he presided over the global launch of the Xbox 360™, spearheaded a revitalized and rebranded Games for Windows business, and helped steer the console’s ascent.”Bach also had kind words for the in...

A Massive Braindump of E3 Impressions
2007-07-17 01:06:00
Hi there, this is Marvin. I'm an editor at The Gamer, and I was at E3 as one of the judges for the Game Critics Awards. I didn't take the time to post to The Gamer during the conference because I was trying to see as many game demos as I possibly could. (My wife was doing a fantastic job with the posting anyway.) But I wanted to share my impressions with y'all now that I'm back. For the Game Critics Awards, I'll only be voting on games that were actually playable. But here are some brief initial impressions of lotsa stuff, sometimes based on trailers alone, so take it with a grain of salt. Little Big PlanetI could see someone buying a PS3 for this unassuming side scroller. The game itself is enormously fun. But just imagine how much more fun Little Big Planet will be once there are free downloadable mod levels designed by folks like Fumito Ueda, Ted Price, Dave Jaffe, Keiji Inafune, Will Wright, Jeff Minter, Matthew Smith, Jordan Mechner, Eric Zimmerman, Greg Costikyan, Tetsuya...

Though not as scantily clad as in years past, the THQ girls, actually two WWE divas, engaged in a Wii cat fight while playing Smackdown vs. Raw 2008 for Wii.The game looked surprisingly good for a Wii title: pristine graphics, lively character models, and a very impressive and dynamic in-game crowd. THQ stressed the game's accessibility as the seemingly non-gaming attractive women had at it.Outside of the wrestling game and a quick mention of the company's other licensed games, THQ highlighted several new games adding that they have been ramping up new original IP over the last year. The first of several new games shown was Conan for Xbox 360 and PS3. It's an action-adventure title that looked like a lot of fun from what we saw. Given the extremely limited number...

Sony likely to cut PS3 price again to better compete
2007-07-16 01:23:00
Sony Corp., which recently cut PlayStation 3 price by 100 U.S. dollars, is likely to cut its price again by year-end in the U.S., responding to widening lead of its rivals, accrding to U.S. media reports Friday. Capcom Chief Financial Officer Kazuhiko Abe said in an interview, "the price has been cut once and it is likely to be cut again towards the end of the year. I expect the (PS3's) installed base to grow gradually." On Monday, Sony cut the price of the PS3 to 499 U.S. dollars, down 17 percent from previous price of 599 dollars, in an effort to spur sales of its video game console to compete with Nintendo Co.'s Wii and Microsoft Corp.'s Xbox 360. The announcement came two days before the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) officially kicked off in Santa Monica, California, where dozens of Sony rivals were expected to show off their latest games and related products.
