Blue Dragon Coming in August
2007-06-30 03:08:00
While it's no secret that the Xbox 360 does not sell nearly as well as the PS3 and Wii in Japan, Microsoft did get a bit of a boost last year when they released Blue Dragon . Developed by some of the greatest minds in the RPG world including Hironobu Sakaguchi (Final Fantasy), Akira Toriyama (Dragon Ball Z), and Nobuo Uematsu (composer of Final Fantasy), Blue Dragon has received rave reviews from across the globe. Finally, the adventure is coming to the United States. On August 28th, Blue Dragon will make its way out of its homeland and come to an Xbox 360 near you. When it does, The Gamer will be there for a full review.

Why The PS3 Does Not Share The Xbox 360's Success
2007-06-29 01:28:00
Before lambasting the site with “X-fan” comments, this is not a PS3 bashing article. We got most of those out of the way late last year, and a little bit in the early part of this year. Still, many readers tend to think that the PS3 is not doing that bad, and that the sales are on track in the same way that the Xbox 360 was during the same period of last year. There are two reasons why the former frame of thinking is incorrect: First, the market was very different one year ago. The Xbox 360 was competing with the hype of the PlayStation 3, the shadow of the then-labeled Nintendo “Revolution” and decent PS2 and Xbox software sales. Second, sales for the Xbox 360 and Wii are continuously picking up, while the PS3 sales are continuously declining. In the instance of the first reason, competition has a lot to do with console sales. During the first six months of the Xbox 360's release, it was nearly on-par to where the PS3 is now, but did so with poor shipments. Sony’s shipme...

IPhone Not Compatible with All IPod Accessories (Yet)
2007-06-28 04:29:00
One thing not mentioned in most of the first generally positive iPhone reviews was Walt Mossberg's point that although the iPhone is capable of receiving power through iPod power adapter accessories, Apple didn't design it to output music to any of the millions of iPod accessories in existence today. This would be a big problem, were it not for Apple telling Mossberg that they're going to fix it with a firmware update. I chalk the omission up to the iPhone team not thinking much about accessories as their launch date loomed. (Besides, Apple's accessory partners having to create new models with different docks just for the iPhone wouldn't be the most efficient approach). However, these reviews consistently mention one foible: the way a Wi-Fi-less iPhone accesses data through the EDGE network rather than through one of AT&T/Cingular's faster networks. My theory here is that Apple wanted to offer unlimited data without charging its users so much as to make the iPhone even more e...

Majesco to bring Blast Works to the Wii
2007-06-28 04:25:00
Majesco has announced they will be bringing Blast Works : Build, Fuse & Destroy, a 2D space shooter, to the Wii this fall. The game will be developed by Budcat Creations and will bring several (relatively) new things to the shooter genre. In Blast Works, players will be able to build their own ship by absorbing pieces of destroyed enemy ships. The larger the ship, the more firepower you'll be able to take. But the larger the ship, the more hits you'll take and the more mobility you'll lose. Choices, choices. The game will also include a Ship Editor and a Level Editor. The game will feature a two-player cooperative mode as well. "Gamers can literally build their own shooter experience via Blast Works' easy-to-use, multiple in-game editors," said Ken Gold, vice president of Marketing, Majesco. "This exceptional customization combined with the unique "stickiness" of enemy debris and bright geometric graphics delivers a standout game that never plays the same way twice." If all of th...
Universe at War to Support PC to Xbox 360 Play
2007-06-28 04:21:00
Petroglyph's upcoming real-time strategy game Universe at War: Earth Assault will support cross-platform multiplayer gaming between Xbox 360 and PC, publisher Sega announced today. Universe at War is the first strategy game to have such functionality announced, with Petroglyph and Sega the first third-party developers to support the feature through Microsoft's Xbox Live and Games for Windows Live services. With Universe at War set to ship for PC later this year and the Xbox 360 version not set to debut until the first quarter of 2008, PC gamers will have a leg up on their console counterparts in terms of experience with the game, but Sega is promising an equal playing field on the technical side--a tall order given the genre's traditional suitability to PC controls. Today's announcement noted that Petroglyph is working on various gameplay modes to make the system pairing appropriate, though no specifics were divulged."Cross-platform play between PC and consoles has been a dream ...

30% failure rate haunts Xbox 360 image
2007-06-27 03:01:00
According to some reports Xbox 360’s continue to experience hardware issues. A recent query put to an Australian game retailer puts the figure at a 30% return rate.Already highlighted in the European community recently, the perceived failure rate of the Xbox 360 game console from Microsoft is beginning to tarnish the platforms image.A recent article over at Smarthouse describes various anecdotal experiences of Xbox 360 failures and subsequent dealings with the Microsoft support procedure. Some are not so flattering (my own experience whilst disappointing, left me with little downtime). From the article; According to an EB Games store manager, who wished to remain anonymous, failure rates for the Xbox 360 have dropped in recent times but still outweigh hardware failures for competing consoles. "We are definitely getting faulty hardware returns of the Xbox 360, but no-where near as much as we used to when it first came out," he said."On initial launch, it was close to 30 per cent o...

155,000 Xbox 360 HD DVD add-ons sold in US
2007-06-26 01:45:00
According to a Microsoft representative, the Xbox 360 HD DVD add-on drive is the "biggest-selling accessory" ever sold for the console and it is also more popular than standalone HD DVD players. In April, the HD DVD Group announced that 100,000 standalone players had been sold in the US but did not include figures for the add-on or PC drives. The representative said that 155,000 add-ons had been sold in the US and by "biggest-selling" he meant in overall revenue. Each add-on sells for an average of $200 USD. With those numbers now released, we now know a ballpark figure as to how many HD DVD capable players there are and that number is between 300,000 and 400,000. That is small in comparison to the number of Blu ray players but most PS3s were purchased with the intent of gaming and not just movie watching. According to CNET, "an average of one disc per Blu-ray machine is sold, compared to four discs per HD DVD machine". However, Blu ray still leads in discs sold for the year.

Testing an Xbox 360 Elite, as a way to fix my troubled Xbox 360
2007-06-25 13:22:00
I finally received and hooked up an Xbox 360 Elite . I procrastinated a little before plugging it in. But I finally had to. You see, a couple of the new games wouldn’t run on my old Xbox 360 . Shadowrun and Forza Motorsport 2 wouldn’t recognize my Xbox Live sign-on. It was bizarre and so far Microsoft hasn’t figured out what’s wrong with the old box. A series of events might explain why it went haywire. My Xbox Live Gold account expired. Then Microsoft came out with the new version of Xbox Live at the same time. I signed on, got the update, and then renewed my account. But I get this weird message at sign-on. It asks if I want to recover my Xbox Live gamertag, as if there were no gamertag on the machine. Then it proceeds to sign in my gamertag in on Xbox Live. I was able to play Gears of War online just fine with this gamertag. But the machine wouldn’t recognize either Forza 2 or Shadowrun. Those games would ask me to sign in and froze. Mind you I never had problems with thi...

PS3 vs Xbox 360 vs Wii Exclusives Comparison
2007-06-25 02:24:00
With the PS3 and Xbox 360 both on level ground in terms of graphics (at the moment anyway), many believe that the winner of the "console wars" will be determined by exclusives that sell each system. PSU has drawn up an accurate exclusives comparison, with the Wii thrown in too, to make it a little easier to predict the fate of Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo's current generation ventures. Before we start though we would like to explain the rules and criteria we set up. First off, we are using the up-to-date pre-order release list from Gamestop which dates to 6/20/07. We are not including any rumored projects or titles that have not been confirmed to Gamestop for pre-ordering.Next we wanted to create a list of titles gamers can look forward to in terms of "upcoming exclusives". Thus, we are disregarding any titles that do not appear on the pre-order lists due to the fact that publishers have yet to finalize plans on platform release or the chance of cancellations and delays. This means ...

Forza Motorsport 2 (Xbox 360)
2007-06-25 02:18:00
Pros: The Xbox 360's graphics grunt makes a noticeable difference when it comes to scenery and the appearance of the more than 300 cars that are on offer. The car damage is realistic as well. The car physics vary among the vehicles, giving a Ford Mustang a very different feel to a high-performance McLaren. Good skill progression allows you to ease into things in an engaging way and the online multiplayer element is very impressive, extending the game well beyond the artificial intelligence of human versus computer racing. Cons: Although there are 12 well-designed tracks, more variety is in order. The musical soundtrack also beings to wear thin. Verdict: Forza racing comes to the Xbox 360 and sets a new benchmark for racing simulators. There are improvements across the board but not at the expense of game play. The developers have managed to keep casual gamers as well as hardcore fans happy.

Pro Evolution Soccer has just been announced by Konami for a Fall 2007 release on most of the major platforms: PS3, Xbox 360, PS2, PSP, PC, and DS. There was no mention of Wii, so it looks like Wii gamers will have to get their soccer kicks playing Super Mario Strikers. The details from Konami:Key to PES 2008 is a proprietary adaptive AI system entitled Teamvision. Unique to the Konami game, Teamvision is a sophisticated AI programming that learns and adapts according to an individual’s style of play. Mass Effect Xbox 360 - More Details on the Krogan Race
2007-06-24 02:08:00
Last week we introduced the Krogan race, a species of large reptilian bipeds that will play a vital role in the universe of "Mass Effect ," the upcoming exclusive for the Xbox 360 video game and entertainment system from Microsoft. This morning, the "Mass Effect" Web site (http://www.MassEffect.com) has been updated to shed a bit more light on the Krogan's background and their history in the galaxy. Roughly 2,000 years ago, the Krogan were a primitive tribal species trapped on a world suffering through a nuclear winter of their own making. They were liberated from this state by the Salarians, who "culturally uplifted" the Krogan by giving them advanced technology and relocating them to a planet void of lethal levels of radiation, toxins and deadly predators. The Salarian's ulterior motive was to have the Krogan join the Citadel forces as soldiers to stand against the unstoppable Rachni a race of intelligent space-faring insects with whom they were engaged in a galactic war. The pl...

Microsoft: Xbox 360 will never follow PS3 with Blu-Ray
2007-06-24 01:08:00
It's well known that Sony has been trying to use the PS3 to bolster the Blu-Ray DVD format in its bid to remain relevant in the audio visual market. Microsoft has now made it very clear that it will not support Sony, with a company spokesperson stating emphatically that the XBOX 360 will never have a Blu-Ray drive. In the high-definition DVD war, Microsoft has sided with the HD-DVD camp, offering an optional external HD-DVD drive for the XBOX 360 console, which can also be used on PCs (with some slight modifications). Blu-Ray is currently winning the format wars. With 1.5 million Blu-Ray players in the hands of consumers, comprised of both PS3s and stand alone players, many say that HD-DVD is already dying with only 300,000 players in the mix, made up of both XBOX 360 HD-DVD players and stand alone players. The co-president of the HD-DVD association attempted to bolster the HD-DVD format by saying that the game is still early and far from over. He continued by saying that Blockbust...

Nyko releases PS3 remote and sixaxis charger
2007-06-23 02:36:00
A sixaxis controller charger and an infrared remote control are headed for the PS3, made by Nyko technologies. The sixaxis controller charger, dubbed the ChargeBase, apparently allows players to rapidly charge four controllers at once from an external power supply, whereas the BluWave remote control provides an alternative solution for those who don't want to navigate through Blu-Ray menus with their sixaxis.Up until recently, the PS3 was the cheapest Blu-Ray player on the market. Although I’m not overly excited about its hi-definition movie playback potential, there must be at least a few people out there who bought the PS3 to watch movies, with whom the remote ought to go down well. To be fair they’re not the ugliest peripherals I’ve ever seen.

Xbox 360/PC Review: Call of Juarez
2007-06-23 01:20:00
The Western genre has yet to really have a breakout game that goes above and beyond. You have to give Polish developer Techland credit because they really tried with Call of Juarez . There are some interesting design and gameplay choices that make the game a bit more fun than it has a right to be. Ultimately the execution is a bit bland and no amount of clichés or whores in compromising situations can rectify the few problems that prevent CoJ’s ascension to greatness. The world of Juarez is seen through the eyes of Europeans looking at America’s past, and like Spaghetti Westerns is a highly stylized view of life in the Old West. Seriously, you use a Bible as a weapon. How frickin’ cool – and American – is that? In Call of Juarez you don’t play as a single lead character. In a brilliant design choice Techland has you playing the young Billy Candle as well as the man chasing him down, Reverend Ray. Billy has returned home after a failed attempt at finding the lost gold of ...

World In Conflict Announced For Xbox 360
2007-06-22 03:58:00
Sierra Entertainment, a division of Vivendi Games, today announced that World in Conflict , the upcoming action-strategy game that blurs the line between traditional strategy gameplay and fast-paced shooters, will be available for the Xbox 360 video game and entertainment system from Microsoft this fall. The game is being developed for Xbox 360 by Sierra’s own Swordfish Studios, in conjunction with Massive Entertainment, also a Sierra-owned studio, to optimize gameplay for the Xbox 360 controller and implement a new heads-up-display (HUD) that is more functional and appealing for console gamers.World in Conflict represents the next-generation of strategy games, pitting Cold War-era superpowers against one another with completely destructible 3D battlefields, blistering visuals, and a narrowed gameplay focus that removes traditional resource-gathering and base-building in favor of non-stop combat, tactical decisions and an FPS-like addiction to intense action.“World in Conflict is...

Users downloading content from other regions is a no-no says Microsoft Microsoft is finally making a move against Xbox Live users who have set up accounts in regions other than their own in order to gain access to download unavailable elsewhere. In a statement, Microsoft has threatened that territory controls would be enforced by "Spring Update" next week, May 7. So, for example, if you are a European users who has set up an account in the States to get film or game demos which you can’t find here, then it’s curtains as of next week… make the most of it while you can. The statement explains that Microsoft needs to comply with regulations and licensing agreements that set where content is to be made available. "As a general policy we try to get global rights to content, but in some cases, it's not possible because of legal restrictions. In other instances, we have to get legal rights on a country-by-country basis, which unfortunately results with us having content on the servic...

Sony technicians hint at future PS3 features
2007-06-21 01:23:00
Could there be a fan-less model? The as yet unofficial word is that the PS3 is in good shape to receive some major Audio Visual improvement in the form of firmware updates. Sony technical officers Izumi Kawanishi and Kanehide spoke of 30-40% more improvements in the AV, saying that they didn’t think it would have a negative effect on fan noise either. The pair even went so far to suggest the possibility of a PS2 like fan-less PS3. Speaking to AV Watch Kanehide said, "So far, we are not worried too much since we have plenty of processing power left even at peak usage." Kawanishi agreed by adding, "Nothing yet comes close to the load that Folding@Home applies. And I can see the possibility of a fan-less PS3 in the future, just like there was for the PS2." The pair also spoke of the PSP/PS3 partnership, suggesting that many ideas were technically ready to put in place, but all depending on consumer desire. "The scary thing about the PS3 is that we can continue to add updates as long a...

These are some of the reasons our Wii and Nintendo DS systems appeal to such a broad range of people. But as with books, television and movies, different content is meant for different audiences. That's why the ESRB provides ratings to help consumers understand the content of a game before they purchase it. As stated on Nintendo.com, Nintendo does not allow any AO-rated content on its systems."Now we'll have to all wait to see what Take-Two and Rockstar ultimately decide to do. They ...
