The Rainbow is here
2008-03-19 16:49:00
Well thanks fo ShopTo.net my copy of Rainbow 6 Vega 2 dropped through the door this morning, and I've been having a quick play. OK so Single player .. Honestly? Pretty much more of the same so far. There seem to be more daylight missions though and less dicking about in a Casino get your ass shot off. However, the hardness level is still as steep as ever and even on the middle difficulty, some bits are fricking hard. Multiplayer - not any yet. But as predicted, there is the dedicated server option that, based on my connection speed, lets games up to 16 players be hosted - nice :D You also getto add your little XBS tag if you want to ;-) It should be noted though, that some of the MP maps seem to be re-hashes of old ones. I've not played any yet, but I've seen: Import/Export Killhouse Presido All of which, I think, were form older RS games Finally, for those that do get the game, a little easter egg ... When you go into the Exclusive Content option, and register an account wit...

How to chose a 360 with a Falcon chipset
2008-03-16 21:58:00
How do you determine whether yout new XBOX 360 contains the much wanted Falcon chipset? Well you can start by checking the box ..... The cardboard box has a little flap in it so you can see the manufacturing date, and you want later than 9/2007, but an even easier way to see is on the outside of the box it says HDMI (yes even for the premium), and the power rating is 175 watt instead of 208 watt for the older model. This is also displayed on a sticker on the outside of the box [Source: Paul Tallett] Bear in mind that the newer Falcons only use 175 watts instead of the 208 watts its predecessor consumes. It also has HDMI and is much quieter to run.

Rainbow Six Vegas 2 only 2 player COOP
2008-03-16 04:29:00
Seems like the 2 in Rainbow Six Vegas not only signifies the second installment of this game, but also the number of players set for some COOP action. The drop from four-player to two-player co-op was made because the single-player levels couldn't easily support four. "Having more then four Rainbow bodies would have simply not fit in many places, so we had to move down to two." States Phil Therien (RS:V2 Game designer) during an interview with Eurogamer.net Wow - I didn't know that, I thought it would be four player again.

GRAW2 goes legacy
2008-03-13 18:14:00
GRAW2 is soon to get a Legacy version of the game. This new Legacy Edition will feature all of the previously released GRAW2 downloadable content adding an additional 32 multiplayer maps, new game modes and new weapons to the classic (see: older) GRAW2 experience [Source: XBOX360Fanboy]  Play.com are currently listing it for £24.99 which doesn't seem to bad considering all the DLC that comes with it. However, it might be cheaper to pick it up secondhand and buy the DLC of the marketplace - Maths anyone?

2008-03-13 12:18:00
N+ co-creator Mare Sheppard told IGN today that Metanet plans to release three downloadable expansion packs, each containing about 200 levels, in the months ahead. The first pack will likely contain some easier levels and some co-op multiplayer levels and could hit Xbox Live Marketplace as early as three weeks from now [Source: IGN] As if 200 levels were not enough, have some more :)
Why Army of Two is region locked
2008-03-13 12:14:00
Super slow connections are what prompted the region blocking. Using a deterministic (peer-to-peer) network model enables the game's synchronized gameplay animation, but requires parity on both systems. If a slow connection is thrown into the mix, "the person with the worst connection brings down the whole group to his/her worst connection level," explained Schneider. "While not generally a problem for COOP (since most people play coop with friends) when playing in Versus mode 3 people can be highly adversely affected by one player with a bad connection. We use the region lock to minimize the likelihood of this occurring." The game's Asian version is an entirely different beast. Due to territory requirements, players of that particular version can't shoot the bodies that are inevitably strewn across the battlefield [Source: Jopystiq] Ha - Asian players can't shoot dead bodies! Does that include T-Bagging as well then?

Army of Two and no USA
2008-03-12 11:50:00
I have noticed a few times when looking at my friends list, that those playing Army of Two, the title is followed by an EU. I did wonder why but now I know. Taken from the EU Manual ... “NOTE: The online game modes in Army of Two are not cross region compatible and is only supported between PAL discs” [Source: Sarcastic Gamer] Basically, if you are in the PAL region, then you will not be able to play againts gamers from the USA. Nice - well for some people, that may be an advantage.

EA to go GTA?
2008-03-10 17:56:00
You may be aware of this, but EA (our favourite publisher) is looking to take over Take Two Interactive. Take Two own the rights for the 2K sports titles, which is obvioulsy a competitor to EA so this is the main motivation for their take over. However, it just so happens that with Take Two comes Rockstar which in turns brings .... Grand Theft Auto. So, relish in the prospect that the GTA series could soon be under the mamouth EA umberella - gulp!

COD4 patch making things worse?
2008-03-10 14:35:00
As you may know, the new COD4 patc h is out and supposed to be causing some issues. One of the new features was host migration, a feature that would select a new host if the existing one leaves. Some gamers over at geekpulp having been having this issue to, and here is where the problem stands. It seems that when the host leaves, the new host is often being passed to a American based player, leaving groups of non-American gamers ending up on laggy American hosted servers. Great for them but not for us. Robert Bowling form Infinity Ward has stated: I understand that the odds are typically stacked against some of our more remote players to be selected as host. We’re currently looking at options available that might help out with those odds and I’ll keep you updated on it. So they are working on a patch ..... so update the patch they have just released. Don't you just love that Microsoft Quality assurance. [Source: geekpulp]

Microsoft confirms BluRay support
2008-03-10 14:08:00
Steve Ballmer, Microsoft CEO, recently pledged their surport for BluRay devices it seems. Talking at Mix08 Ballmer stated: Microsoft will work with the Blu-ray next-generation DVD format in some form following the demise of Toshiba's HD-DVD, which Microsoft previously supported. "We've already been working on, for example, in Windows, device driver support for Blu-ray drives and the like, and I think the world moves on. Toshiba has moved on. We've moved on, and we'll support Blu-ray in ways that make sense." [Source: SeattlePI]  It doesn't exactly say that this includes the XBOX 360 though.

New SKU and with BluRay?
2008-03-10 13:55:00
A writer at Trusted Rreviews claims a "rock solid" source told him that Microsoft WILL be replacing the 20GB hard drive on the standard Xbox 360 with a larger 60GB version. Dates are not nailed down, but my source says Microsoft wants it done and dusted before the end of its financial year which translates as our Q2. Hmm - not that bothered as I already own a 360, but the more interesting and yet annoying suggestion is that: the company is also toying with the idea of introducing a new 360 SKU and given that hard drive and connectivity variations are already covered it would seem that the most logical conclusion is a model with a built-in Blu-ray drive. An external drive makes sense too, but with the format war over it wouldn't explain Microsoft's hesitation and while it goes against the company line that the 360 is primarily a games console (verses the PS3's media centre ambitions) the collapse of HD DVD may well mean it at least wishes to give users the option Althou...
