Explore Liberty City with Google Map application
2008-05-04 05:48:00
Between the comprehensive in-game map, the GPS-imbued minimap, and the TomTom-esque functionality of certain vehicles, we've yet to misplace ourselves within Liberty City 's digital boroughs. Still, if you find yourself lost whilst playing Grand Theft Auto IV, we guess this Liberty City map application using the Google Maps interface would come in handy. A number of user contributions have already been made to the map, showing the location of hidden items, easter eggs, pigeon locations, stunt jumps, and yes, even hookers, whom we assume were fitted with GPS locaters by trained prostitute handlers before being released back into the wild. It makes for a useful cartographical companion for those with a laptop near their console of choice -- if you don't mind ruining the fun of exploring the nooks and crannies of Rockstar's intricately crafted metropolis for yourself, that is.

Blizzard launches new online store
2008-05-04 01:27:00
The new and improved Blizzard store opened recently, and it's definitely worth a look. It has a very clean layout, making finding what you want pretty simple. They carry everything from the Blizzard games to the Warcraft action figures to WoW game time. Their apparel selection isn't very large due to that primarily being handled by Jinx, but the store is still worthwhile.Plus, registering for the Blizzard store comes with another perk. You can register for the Beta Test lottery, which is a chance at being chosen for upcoming beta phases of various games. Wrath? Starcraft II perhaps? All of the above? Who knows! I've been considering getting into the WoW TCG, so if I get a shot at a beta test out of it, too... hey, why not?Edit: The Blizzard EU store is not yet live, but I imagine it will be soon. Sorry, Europe!

Bourne Conspiracy demo hits UK stores
2008-05-03 03:20:00
While the rest of us wait for the May 16 demo of Sierra's Bourne Conspiracy action title to hit Xbox Live, UK gamers can snag the demo today at their local GAME store. While picking up his copy of Grand Theft Auto IV one of our loyal soldiers was given the demo for the anticipated game based on the best-selling novels by Robert Ludlum. We've been vocal on our interest in the game so color us green with envy from the early demo, at least until it finally lands on the marketplace later this month.[Thanks, Rhemelious B.]

Can World of Warcraft be beaten?
2008-05-02 08:43:00
World of Warcraft is doing terrific lately, but if you believe the hype, there's trouble on the horizon, and it's coming in the form of two big MMOs: Age of Conan and Warhammer Online. Greg Howson of Britain's Guardian newspaper has a column online in which he examines WoW's grip on MMO gamers and the two big games it'll face this year. We'll leave the cross-MMO predictions to Massively, but for their part, Blizzard says they're looking forward to a little competition in the MMO pool. Howson has J. Allen Brack, WoW's lead producer, saying that they're looking forward to playing the new games as well. And it's true -- real competition in this space might actually be a welcome thing to fans of all MMO games. Blizzard is working hard now, but they might actually be working harder if they had a competitor breathing down their necks.Unfortunately for those who want to see that happen, it's going to be super hard for anyone to get near Blizzard's neck, much less near their ...

Complete 64DD collection in eBay
2008-05-02 05:10:00
The 64DD is unquestionably one of the more obscure footnotes in Nintendo history. The Nintendo 64 add-on sold only 15,000 units (85,000 units were reportedly scrapped), meaning that finding the hardware in good condition can be a tricky task, let alone a complete 64DD collection.Yet that is precisely what's being offered in this eBay auction from UK seller golly_75. As well as a boxed 64DD unit, golly_75 is also including a Japanese Nintendo 64, a Nintendo 64 keyboard, a RandNet starter kit, and all nine of the 64DD games that were made, including rarities such as a factory sealed Japan Pro Golf Tour 64 (of which only 10,000 copies were made) and Daishuugou (Doshin the Giant 2: More than a Giant, which numbered only 3,000 units). In short, it's the most impressive 64DD collection we've ever seen. The price so far reflects that, as well -- at the time of writing, the highest bid is $888.[Via GameSniped]

Lord of the Rings Online Creators See Influx Of Cash
2008-05-02 00:45:00
Turbine Inc., creators of Lord of the Rings : Online and Dungeons & Dragons: Online, has been awarded $40 million in venture capital funding, according to an online report created by investment site Private Equity Hub. This latest infusion of cash brings Turbine's total venture funding to $88 million. Turbine spokesman Adam Mersky has promised to reveal information on the company's future plans within the next two weeks. While we won't know exactly what Turbine has planned until it sheds more light on things, I would like to point out a few things that we do know. Both LotRO and D&DO are reasonably successful and are presumably running under their own self-propagating revenue streams. There's no need for Turbine to use this new cash on either of those games. Turbine is a company with a history of creating massively multiplayer online games, and only massively multiplayer online games. It's unlikely that the company would suddenly opt to create...

Blizzard Acquires Diablo3.com
2008-05-02 00:45:00
In a move sure to generate reams of speculation from Diablo fans the world over, the former owner of Diablo3.com just revealed that the domain has been handed over to Blizzard on request. It seems that Blizzard contacted the site's management a few months back asking for use of the domain, and, being a loyal fan of Blizzard's series, the webmaster handed it over to Blizzard completely gratis. While it's not uncommon for corporations of all kinds to snap up domains even tangentially related to their products, it's almost too easy to see this move as a strategic step laying the groundwork for the eventual release of a third Diablo game.Let's not forget that it's been almost eight years since the last full Diablo title -- that's a long wait for a sequel, even by Blizzard's notoriously meticulous standards. Financially, another Diablo game seems almost predestined. Both Diablo, Diablo II and their sequels are among the best-selling PC games of all time and short o...

Zero Punctuation takes on the God of War
2008-04-30 23:28:00
Zero Punctuation's Yahtzee isn't content with taking on just God of War: Chains of Olympus this week. No, he takes on the whole bloody franchise. What we end up getting is almost four minutes of Yahtzee admitting that he's nitpicking and that the series helps give us relief from our 9 8:30 to 5 6 (with a half-hour lunch break) lives. The trademark Yahtzee anger just isn't there in this review, but considering it was overflowing in last week's Smash Bros. piece, an easing of tension might be good for a week. This week's NSFW review eviscerating God of War: Chains of Olympus Continue reading Zero Punctuation takes on the God of War
BattleForge Announced
2008-04-30 23:28:00
In a surprising move, EA has announced BattleForge, an online real-time strategy game that has players assembling their forces and fighting through virtual trading cards. The game is in development at EA Phenomic, the studio behind SpellForce and Siedler, for release this Fall. As with other online trading card games, players will be able to win and trade cards, as well as buy new cards through micro-transactions, which seems to be the new rage these days. However, the company notes that the retail release of BattleForge will be the "complete game" and that micro-transactions won't be necessary to experience the full game. ?BattleForge is the next step in compelling RTS gameplay by taking the battles completely online,? said executive producer Richard Leinfellner. ?With co-op play, challenging tournaments, Guilds, chat rooms and a robust marketplace for trading and buying your cards,? he continued, ?BattleForge is the first RTS to add integral social and community components to an ...

Ghostbusters (360/PS3/Wii)

var digg_url = 'http://digg.com/gaming_news/Hands_on_wit h_the_new_Ghostbusters _game_360_PS3_Wii ';  Ghostbusters is one of those nerdy properties that when reissued, will never please all of its fans.Even in a brief demo with a few other writers, questions -- and follow-ups -- circled around "crossing the streams" and even geekier topics. I'm not at that level of spirit-stopping enthusiast, but I'm cautious about the new version, probably because it shows so much promise. I hate to get behind something, especially a beloved property, only to see it crumble. The Ghostbusters animation, graphics, settings, and physics look great. The original cast has reassembled to record for this game. It's even being written by Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis. But the biggest thing I didn't see was that story, and that narrative is an important part of Ghostbusters. We'll find out how well the script and setting hold up with its October, 2008 release.Gallery: Ghostbusters (360/PS3/Wii)Continue rea...

Unreal Tournament meets Super Mario
2008-04-28 00:27:00
If any of you own either the PC or PS3 versions of Unreal Tournament 3, you might enjoy downloading this Mario -inspired map made by FrontAXL.The blocky platforms will look familar to players of the original Super Mario Bros., as well as many of the background elements. It's not an exact replica (nor is it meant to be), but the similarities are impossible to deny. Also, the PC version of the map includes music and sounds from the beloved classic.Check out the awesome in-game video of the stage in action along with some other screens. Sony hires 13 PS2 game developers to increase sales in India
2008-04-28 00:06:00
To give some perspective on the relative age of Sony 's second console, think about this: if the PlayStation 2 were a human being, it would be a third-grader right about now, and would probably know more about long division than we do.While most eight-year-old consoles generally go the way of the Jaguar, Sony seems dedicated to the continued growth of their popular (though fairly aged) home console -- for example, in an attempt to extend their already impressive multinational reach, Sony recently hired 13 India n game developers to create domestically-themed games and improve sales in India and the Middle East.Though nearly 3.3 million Indians already own PS2s, Sony is confident that creating games based on "Bollywood, mythology and culture" and featuring motion-sensing gameplay using the fairly neglected Eye Toy peripheral will further increase their dominance in the Indian market. Could these rupee-garnering efforts prolong the system's life until middle school, and the associated...

Grand Theft Auto IV Review
2008-04-27 23:16:00
With Grand Theft Auto IV hitting store shelves this week, the reviews have finally started to pour in. We haven't seen such universal acclaim for a title this generation. From the looks of things, no matter which version you get (PS3 or Xbox 360 ), you're in for quite a ride: IGN (100/100) - " For those wanting to know which version looks better, the edge goes to the PS3 ... Grand Theft Auto IV is one of the best games we've ever seen ... The only thing you need to know is that you have to play this game. Period." 1UP (100/100) - "The PS3 version has the slightest visual edge, plus motion-control support ... Liberty City is no longer just a place you explore outdoors, looking for stunt jumps or the thrill of a six-star wanted level after riling up the LCPD during missions. I spent hours of my week-long review session checking out the game's indoor attractions." GameTrailers (98/100) - "Rockstar always has a knack for choosing just the right songs to set the tone of it...

Sega Superstars Tennis bombs, down to $20
2008-04-26 23:43:00
Despite our enthusiasm (and the enthusiasm of Sega fanboys everywhere) over Sega Superstars Tennis , a release that drips with fan service, the game failed to inspire consumers to rush out and buy the game like they did with Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games? Not enough Mario, perhaps? Or olympics?Whatever the case, slow sales for the tennis title has given GameStop early cause to slash its prices for Sega Superstars Tennis across all platforms, and you can now buy the Wii game for as little as $19.99. It's a great bargain, considering the game was released only a month ago! You can order Sega Superstars Tennis through GameStop's online shop, but why not save a few bucks and pick it up at one of the retailer's local stores?Gallery: Sega Superstars Tennis

No Madden in next Madden
2008-04-26 23:30:00
Electronic Arts is looking to make a big change in the upcoming Madden game; John Madden won?t be the announcer for the game. Instead, Tom Hammond of NBC Sports and Cris Collinsworth of NFL Network and NBC Sports will be taking his place in Madden ?09. We all knew that it would happen sooner or later, as the football legend is in his seventies. Keep in mind that this is the 20th installment of the series, so it just wouldn?t be complete without the main man himself. The game is titled after him, so why not include him? Maybe at least a cameo would do justice. Read (AOL Sports)

X-Play: Xbox Live Orientation
2008-04-26 21:22:00
Xbox Live gets us mad. We don't mean because of the dips in service that happen from time to time, we don't mean some of the exorbitantly priced content; we mean the people. We love people, but on Xbox Live social normality is thrown out the window as some gamers just need to turn on that hate.We always thought it was because some people (not all, but you've met these people too) are just straight up jerkfaces (see also, Asshats) but apparently some gamers were just introduced to Live via this orientation video.X-Play created a (sometimes) funny video that's meant to shine light on the personalities of Xbox Live and how the hate came to be. Video's embedded after the jump due to some NSFW language and crude humor, but remember the whole thing is a gag and is meant to have you shake your head in both understanding and disgust because it's pretty accurate. Unfortunately.[via THEBBPS]Continue reading X-Play: Xbox Live Orientation

Valkyria Chronicles is sweeping across Japan this week, and as if all the free swag wasn't enough, there's a free theme for your PS3, too. What's good is that you don't even have to purchase the game, or be in Japan for that matter, to get this. Just simply go to the Valkyria Japanese website, go to "Download ," go to "Custom Theme ," and then download the sucker. It's not much, but hopefully this little piece of Valkyria will keep you company until the game's Autumn release in North America and Europe.[Via Famitsu]

Capcom offers box art 'redemption' for Okami Wii
2008-04-24 22:09:00
Capcom has responded to the Okami Wii box snafu by offering replacement cover artwork "to better reflect the artistic nature of the game," which we presume is a more professional way to say "to better remove the reflection of the IGN watermark."Head over to the Cover Artwork Redemption page (yes, they call it redemption) to fill out the form and choose one of three designs, including a "redesigned" version of the original. Previews for the other two replacements are shown above. The offer is free and an email confirmation from Capcom states the cover art will be shipping "in the next few weeks."

Operation Darkness demo hits Xbox Live
2008-04-24 22:09:00
Upon first glance (and your second through seventh glances, admittedly) Operation Darkness seems like a game created by insane people. It's a squad based tactical game where you're fighting the "hidden battles of WWII," but the reason they were hidden is apparently because they were waged against skeletons. And and some point, one of those skeletons gets punched by a wolf man in a trench coat. See? Crazy. We tell you all this, not as a lead-in to dispel your presumptions about the game's insanity, but to see if you'd play the new demo on Xbox Live for us and let us know how it is. Because frankly, we're a little freaked out.

GTAIV: PS3 vs. Xbox 360 In UK
2008-04-23 21:10:00
There are essentially two approaches to releasing video games: either you stick with a company and a console and hope people like your games enough that they?ll buy that console just to play your games, or you spread your seed far and wide, sowing in any field that seems fertile enough for a cash crop. Many successful franchises do this: Metal Gear Solid remains strongly in the Sony camp for the most part, Bungie despite regaining their freedom from Microsoft has still made no moves towards breaking their partnership with them. Nintendo sinks its claws deeper into the youth of the world every year with yet more Pokemon games. Some titles however are just too big to stick to one system. Since its inception the Grand Theft Auto games have garnered both acclaim and criticism, with most of the criticism coming from outside of the gaming community. There?s no doubt that the upcoming Grand Theft Auto IV will be a big seller all around, but if the UK is anything to judge by it seems that the...
