Midway announces new Stranglehold map pack
2007-12-07 16:20:00
While Midway may have choked on the critically panned multiplayer aspects of its John Woo-inspired gangster drama Stranglehold, the publisher hasn't abandoned the online-enabled maneuver just yet. Today, Midway announced a new map pack for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions of the game will be available "soon" in North America.Included in the map pack will be 10 additional maps and 21 new multiplayer character skins. Sample locations to be included as part of the update include Kowloon Market, Wong's Estate Grounds, and the rooftops of Chicago. The map pack will confer an added bonus to Xbox 360 gamers, as 10 new achievements totaling 250 achievement points will also be added to the game.Midway has not yet priced the map pack or dated its arrival. Burnout Paradise Demo Hands-On - PlayStation 3
2007-12-07 16:11:00
If you've got a Burnout itch that's badly in need of scratching, we've got some good news. Though the North American and European release dates for Burnout Paradise are still over a month away, on December 13 those of you with a PlayStation 3 or an Xbox 360 will be afforded some temporary relief in the form of a demo that supports both solo and online play. We recently had an opportunity to spend several hours with the PS3 version of said demo, and we're pleased to report that it bodes well for the finished game. The demo gets off the start line with a brief intro movie detailing some of the different areas and neighborhoods that make up Paradise City. Only three areas are available in the demo version: Motor City, Ocean View, and Big Surf Beach. Essentially you only get to drive on and around the city's eastern coastline, and while there's plenty of gameplay to be found there, we'd estimate that the demo area accounts for less than 10 percent of the map that you'll be able t...

Tabula Rasa - PC review
2007-12-04 08:08:00
Brilliant in some ways, and fun at times, but too flawed to justify the monthly fee!!If I were reviewing RGTR as a single player action shooter, I would probably be calling it brilliant, and if it were a free to play rpg, I would be able to overlook it's flaws, because it does shine in some areas, and it is fun for a little while. But in all, this game just lacks the sense of reward that would hold my attention long enough to justify the monthly fee.For me, the main appeal of an rpg is the sense that that my character is developing and being rewarded as I progress through the game. Unfortunately, this is completely missing from Tabula Rasa .Character's advance according to a tier system, where you choose a new class at levels 5, 15, and 30. But in truth, the abilities you get at the upper tiers are often less effective then the lower tier abilities. In my experience, the best weapon in the game is the shotgun which is available at level 1 to all characters. While designing the lowe...

PS3 outsells Nintendo Wii
2007-12-03 11:44:00
The total sales in Japan have proven that the PS3 is more popular than the Wii, is this a trend that will carry on? In my opinion the Sony PS3 is by far the best games console on the market and will be for many years to come, sure the Nintendo Wii is ok but it just doesn’t have a lot to offer, sure its good when you have had a drink but that’s about all, but on the other hand the PS3 well what more do I need to say, the PS3, it just lives up to every expectation. For the small minority out there that loves the Wii then, fair play (someone has to) Powered by ScribeFire.

Xbox 360 outsells rival PlayStation 3, myth or reality?
2007-11-30 08:26:00
My God!! we have a real battle on our hands here...Microsoft Corp. on Thursday reported U.S. sales of 310,000 Xbox 360 game consoles for the Thanksgiving week, trailing Nintendo's Wii console but leading Sony's PlayStation 3 at the start of holiday shopping. The release of the numbers also brought some controversy. In a statement distributed to the media, Microsoft claimed that Xbox 360 sales were twice those of the PlayStation 3 for the week, which included the key "Black Friday" shopping day after Thanksgiving. Sony didn't disagree that the PlayStation 3 came in third, but said it wasn't by the margin Microsoft cited.Sony traditionally doesn't disclose game console sales figures until the NPD Group research firm releases monthly numbers, Kimberly Otzman, a spokeswoman for Sony Computer Entertainment America, said."However, I can assure you that Microsoft's estimates of our PS3 unit sales numbers are way off and they did not outsell PS3 2:1 during Black Friday week," Otzman sai...

'Uncharted: Drake's Fortune' proves PS3 can kick ass!
2007-11-30 07:05:00
By the time Nathan Drake — the smooth-talking, treasure-hunting descendant of famed privateer Sir Francis Drake — arrives on a teeny island in the middle of the Pacific, you will agree that the Sony PlayStation 3 has a much-needed holiday hit on its hands.Uncharted: Drake's Fortune really gets going at that point, about two hours into the game, when the agile explorer, accompanied by an attractive female videographer, crash lands on the dangerous isle in search of the legendary El Dorado.Best described as Tomb Raider meets James Bond, this PS3 exclusive is played from a third-person perspective in which you control Nate as he swims rivers, jumps chasms, swings from vines and exchanges fire with mercenaries — all without losing his charm while trying to impress his reluctant sidekick, Elena Fisher.Speaking of fighting, Nate can duck for cover behind boulders, walls and tree trunks by tapping the O key on the PS3 controller, and then twist around to aim (L1) and fire (R1) at en...

Activision CEO Hoping For $200 PS3, 360 By '09
2007-11-30 06:57:00
Gamespot reports on comments made by Activision CEO Bobby Kotick at this week's Reuters Media Summit in NYC; the publishing veteran feels strongly that deep price cuts are needed in the next two years to ensure that this generation of consoles reaches a truly mass market audience. For comparison: "The original Xbox dropped to the sub-$200 range six months after debuting at $299 in November 2001. The PlayStation 2, which also retailed for $299 when it launched in 2000, fell below $200 in May 2002, and subsequently has sold more than 120 million units as of its seventh anniversary in October. Nintendo's ill-fated last-generation console, the GameCube, was originally listed at $199 when it first went on sale in November 2001, though that price was cut to $150 by May 2002."Lets hope we see a $200 PS3 coming soon. Justice League - New Frontier Movie Preview
2007-11-29 15:11:00
Adapting the award-winning DC Comics miniseries DC: THE NEW FRONTIER by Darwyn Cooke, Justice League : The New Frontier spins a tale of the DC Universe in the 1950s, focusing on test pilot Hal Jordan (Green Lantern) and the Martian Manhunter. The story also features other DC characters, including Barry Allen (the Flash), Superman, Wonder Woman, Batman, and many more.As much as I like Kevin Conroy, Jeremy Sisto will be an awesome batman.....trust me

Ninja Gaiden 2: First look
2007-11-29 14:54:00
We'll Ninja Gaiden 2 for the Xbox 360 is looking nothing short of awesome! Its like playing super fast and super fluid version of Castlevania and Devil May Cry!The game once again focuses on ninja Ryu Hayabusa, but a younger version of him. Apparently, Ninja Gaiden II will focus on the butt-kicking hero's formative years in adventure, set before the action in the original NES and arcade Ninja Gaiden adventures. The specifics of the story aren't available yet, but longtime fans can look forward to some interesting twists and new faces, along with all kinds of stabbing. The game is slated to ship next year exclusively for the Xbox 360.
PlayStation 3 sales nearly triple over Thanksgiving
2007-11-29 14:34:00
The PlayStation 3 console may be lagging behind rivals Wii and Xbox 360 in terms of sales, but things could finally be turning around for Sony. Following the introduction of the 40GB PlayStation 3, which effectively dropped the price of the console by $100 down to $399, sales of the console more than doubled during the Thanksgiving week.Though the exact numbers weren’t revealed, Sony spokeswoman Kimberly Otzman confirmed a 245 percent increase in the number of PS3 units sold in the week November 18 to 24 compared to the previous week. While the Wii is still the unquestionable leading seller, its inability to keep up with demand has left the door open for Sony to pick up any sales Nintendo misses out. Compared with $249 for a Wii and $280 for the least-expensive Xbox 360, the PS3 is still the most expensive console out there. But the drop in price, from $599 to $499 to $399 has led some customers to finally see the PS3 as a viable alternative, plus the embedded Blu-ray pl...

Casey Calvert, Guitarist for Hawthorne Heights, Dead at 26
2007-11-25 16:39:00
Casey Calvert, guitarist for post punk/ rock band Hawthorne Heights, was found dead early Saturday morning. Calvert was 26-years-old.According to several accounts Calvert appeared healthy on Friday night while spending time with friends before going to sleep for the night. Those same reports indicated that Calvert passed away at some point while sleeping.Calvert's sound played a big role in Hawthorne Heights and its highly successful second album If Only You Were Lonely which debuted at #3 on the Billboard charts and produced the hit single "Saying Sorry."Hawthorne Heights had a show in Detroit, Michigan on Friday night and was scheduled for a show on Saturday in Washington D.C.The official site of Hawthorne Heights posted a message on their front page stating:"Today is probably the worst day ever. Its with our deepest regrets that we have to write this. Casey Calvert passed away in his sleep last night. We found out this afternoon before sound-check. We've spent the entire day tr...

WWE Smackdown vs Raw 2008 PS3 review
2007-11-25 16:28:00
I'm keeping this brief. There is really nothing new in SVR 2008 . With little notable improvement to the formula and steps backward in several key areas, SmackDown! vs. RAW 2008 is a big disappointment. The Good Gameplay still offers a solid wrestling experience The new fighting styles do a good job of differentiating different wrestler types Still lots of different stuff to do Fantastic wrestler models. The Bad Old problems like clipping issues and AI shoddiness are still a big problem in this sequel New 24/7 mode is severely disappointing Most modes have seen little to no updating Fighting styles sometimes feel imbalanced Commentary is still abysmal. That one element is about the best thing you can say for the game's audio, which is exceptionally underwhelming. It's mostly the fault of the voice acting (though the recycled sound effects don't help, either). The 24/7 mode dialogue bits are badly delivered, and t...

Unreal Tournament 3 PC review
2007-11-25 16:13:00
Fresh! New! Fast!! and Same old kick ass fun!!I know I'm contradicting myself there, but thats the truth.Unreal Tournament 3 doesn't reinvent the UT franchise, but considering how much shooters have changed since the last one was released, it still manages to feel surprisingly fresh. The UT games have never been about single-player action, but like in the previous games, there is a campaign mode in UT3. It's a series of matches against bots wrapped around a basic but uneventful storyline. The big switch this time around is that Unreal Tournament is no longer a sport. Now it's war, and you play as a character on the hunt for revenge against an evil Necris woman who led an assault against unarmed civilians on your colony. You and the survivors of the attack join up with a corporation, fight to gain territory held by other corporations, and so on. It's little more than a five- to seven-hour training mode to help you get up to speed on the maps and the modes so you can go into multip...

Assassin's Creed Xbox 360 reivew, PS3 review
2007-11-25 16:02:00
This is one of those games which will stick to your ribs, like after custard or beef goulash. It has one of the most unique gameworlds ever created: beautiful, memorable, and alive. Besides being a great game world it's a fun and exciting action game with a ton of stuff to do and places to explore, rounded out with silky-smooth controls and a complex story that will slowly grab you the more you play. Make no mistake: Assassin's Creed is one of the best efforts of the year and a must-own game for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 owners. In this game you'll explore three major cities of the Holy Land in the 12th century: Jerusalem, Damascus, and Acre. Each city is beautifully rendered from top to bottom. The visual design has a lot to do with how believably organic everything feels. The cities are absolutely huge, and though you don't get full exploration privileges in the first few chapters, they eventually open up to let you travel seamlessly from one side to another. Everything is bea...

The Witcher
2007-11-17 10:23:00
Now this game was so refreshing to review...Dark, foreboding world that looks, sounds, and feels lived in Fantastic story populated by realistic NPCs with realistic problems Innovative new combat mechanics add depth in place of mindless clicking Cinematic visuals and a superb soundtrack.Built on a 2007 edition of the Aurora Engine that powers Neverwinter Nights, The Witch er is something of a cross between action RPGs such as Diablo and more complex plate-mail potboilers such as Neverwinter Nights. Essentially, the developers work both sides of the street. On the one hand, you have exactly one character choice in the form of greasy-haired Geralt of Rivia, the monster-hunting mercenary "witcher" of the title, along with other ostensibly dumbed-down features such as big bunches of combat and Gatling-gun-quick leveling up. But on the other hand, you also get a postwar fantasy world called Temeria that feels lived in (if not postapocalyptic), as well as plot points that involve serious...
Kane & Lynch: Dead Men
2007-11-17 10:02:00
This game was so full of promise. I even tom-tommed about it to everyone that I could...but nothing in this game works out nearly as well as you'd hope.Kane & Lynch: Dead Men is an ugly game, and we're not necessarily talking about the graphics. This criminal tale is packed with a collection of completely unlikable characters with no redeeming value whatsoever. It's impossible to even root for them as antiheroes. Once you get past the messy, meaningless story, things don't get too much better because you're saddled with clunky artificial intelligence on the part of your allies and your enemies, as well as a core shooting mechanic that simply doesn't satisfy. The unfortunate part is that the game does have a few bright points and feels like it had a lot of potential that just didn't come together as well as anyone must have hoped. Here's the story : The story mode opens with you in the role of Kane, a death row inmate on his way to his execution, apparently convicted of be...
Crysis PC review
2007-11-17 09:48:00
The most awaited game of the year and we got our hands on it! whoo hoo!Now here's the thing with Crysis , is one of, if not the, most stunningly beautiful games we've ever seen..yes it looks better than Bio Shock. But even beyond that, it's a pretty fantastic shooter. Solid weapons, intelligent enemies, and fairly open level designs mix with nano-suit powers to make this one of the more entertaining ballistic showdowns in some time. The fact that developer Crytek has figured out how to create a story that doesn't drip with cheese helped immerse us into a "realistic" and exciting near-future. Voice acting is pretty good, the in-game cutscenes are well designed to never take you out of the action, and the aliens are actually menacing and dangerous, unlike the campy Trigens of Far Cry. Crytek has obviously learned a lot about presentation and storytelling since their first effort. I found myself caring about the story that's there and wanting to kick the aliens off of our planet. If...

Beowulf - PC game review
2007-11-17 09:30:00
Beowulf sucks. See the thing with me is I won't waste your time and my time in telling you if a game sucks. I will still write about it in relative detail, thats for you to figure out if you want to read ahead or not...but coming back to what i said earlier, yes this game sucks. Don't people get it by now...movie games totally suck. The game flows like this: Beowulf enters an area, mindless monsters spawn and attack, then another wave charges, then another, and so on until the foes are vanquished and an intangible barrier goes down allowing you to progress. Sounds like God of War. On larger troll (what?) enemies you perform timed button-tap sequences to bring them down, ending with a brutal assault on their heads. Sounds like God of War's Minotaur fights. In fact, most of this game is God of War (which was awesome BTW), only done with far less detail, depth, and knowledge of producing enjoyable gameplay experiences. You even get the slow-motion segments inserted into the regular f...

BlackSite: Area 51 Review
2007-11-17 09:18:00
One thing we can say about BlackSite: Area 51 is that it's easy to pick up. Control-wise, there's nothing to set the game apart from any of the popular FPS titles that it is competing with this holiday season. Left stick for movement, right stick for aiming, L trigger to look down your weapon's sights, R trigger to fire and so forth. You do have at least one or two people in your "squad" for the bulk of the game and you can order them to move to specific locations, attack specific targets and perform context-sensitive actions which are apparently beyond the skills of the main character. Such as opening doors. And truth be told, Blacksite deserves to lurk in the shadow of giants like Bio Shock as it doesn't quite reach the lofty bar that's been set for the FPS genre. The plot is rather generic--you're a Delta Force commando who has to clean up the mess created by some eggheads at a secret government research facility--and while your NPC comrades are likeable, their battle skill...

Need for Speed Pro Street Review - PC
2007-11-17 08:19:00
Ok, I hate to say this, but I have to. NFS Pro Street downright sucks. The gameplay is so boring that i'd rather play jazz jackrabbit till my fingers bleed. In a nutshell, this games reminds you of a super hot chick who turns you off the minute she starts talking. The truth is that when I got the demo it kinda sucked by itself. But since the release was so close I thought I'd hang on a little longer before making my statement. Overall the game is kind pointless. There is nothing to get you going, nothing on the other side of the fence. its just pointless. playing this full version is just like playing the Demo over and over again. the tracks are the same, opponents are the same, heck even all the cars are the same. i have seen online 2D race games that made 10 times more sense then this.So you can tune/paint your care just like en previous NFS's but this time its just left in the garage, you rarely use it as cars are usually appointed to you for each game, so painting and tuning y...

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare - PC review
2007-11-10 08:25:00
War may be hell for. People love hell. Call of Duty 4, takes you on a very short ride to hell and back, leaving you gasping for more! COD 4 starts off by bringing things into a fictionalized story that still seems fairly plausible and is a jarring, intense, and gripping take on war in the new millennia. The enemies are smarter, the weapons are deadlier, and the grenades all too plentiful. COD4 will shake loose your fillings and have you begging for more. Thats what we felt atleast after making out with the call of duty 4 modern warfare review! But COD 4 is more than just an updated setting. It's also an amazing multiplayer first-person shooter and a great but brief single-player campaign with the visual chops to make it a standout shooter in an era filled with seemingly dozens of standout shooters. Infinity Ward was born out of the success of retelling some of the greatest battles in World War II. The company has become synonymous with the virtual beach at Normandy. So it was quite ...

Gears of War PC Review
2007-11-06 15:52:00
Prettier, faster and ported controls. Thats how i would describe Gears of War for the PC. We've all played the 360 version and it was to die for! In fact GoW is one of the main reasons a lot of people purchased the 360.For those of you who haven't played yet..here's the story:The story takes place fourteen years after an event called Emergence Day, when a group of creatures called the Locust Horde burst from the ground and launch a full-scale invasion on an otherwise peaceful planet. After countless losses, the humans exercised a scorched earth policy and destroyed their own cities instead of letting the Horde control them. However, the aliens continue their relentless invasion, and every capable person is called to arms, including Marcus Fenix, a soldier imprisoned for dereliction of duty. Players take the role of Marcus to continue the fight. Now while that sets the tone for the game, you have a tough choice to make. Gamepad or Keyboard and mouse. They both have their pros and c...

Facts about Sony PS3 & Xbox 360
2007-11-06 15:37:00
I got this fantastic article from here:Here's a little brief:With many gamers split on the power potential of the Sony PS3 and the Xbox 360, we had a great comment from George on this very subject and he is an IT hardware technician, he feels he has some real facts about game development on the Sony PS3 and Xbox 360 .Here is George’s Comment:I have both systems.I am an IT hardware technician. If you want my opinion about this debate, then I have some facts about this argument. There is a lot of fanboy crap on this page, and very few facts. So here are some facts:The Xbox 360s GPU is more powerful and EFFICIENT than the PS3s. It uses a UNIFIED SHADER ARCHITECTURE similar to the R600 dx10 ATI cores. That means that each pipeline can produce vertex and pixel shaders, unlike the ps3 which has a fixed number of pipelines for each. Meaning that heavy pixel or vertex scenes can explot the xboxs superior architecture. The PS3s GPU us based on an old nvidia 7XXX series which is a bit slow compa...
