Sony: Tokyo Game Show 2007

At the Tokyo Game Show today, Sony Computer Entertainment Chief Executive Kazuo Hirai had some good & bad news for PlayStation 3 owners. The bad news is the virtual reality community Home has had it's launch pushed back from October to "Spring 2008". (See Home - PlayStation 3's Virtual World.) Hirai explained the delay: "We aim to launch this as something that can meet expectations of people all over the world." The good news: Sony are to release a new force-feedback rumble controller for the PlayStation 3, the DualShock 3 - available in Japan in November, next spring for North America & Europe. E3 (Electronic Entertainment Expo) was scaled-down this year from the usually chaotic, massive tradeshow to a more exclusive series of press events. Nintendo announced three new peripherals for the Wii Console: the Wii Balance Board (comes with Wii Fitness exercise software), Wii Zapper (a gun shell for the Wii Remote) & Wii Wheel (to be released with Mario Kart Wii). Microsoft presented new trailers for HALO 3 & HALO WARS, even a limited edition HALO-themed XBOX 360 Console was previewed. Microsoft's XBOX 360 Elite release in the UK & Europe was announced for August 24th. Sony revealed its plans for phasing-out the 60GB model of the PlayStation 3 Console in the US (the new 80GB version was launched in the USA on Monday). And a new slimmer, more compact version of the Sony PSP console with TV-output was also announced, due for release in September

The latest Sony PlayStation 3 free system software update (Version 1.8) now lets you upscale standard DVDs, PS2 & PSone games to 1080p resolution. The update uses smart software to stretch, enhance & enlarge, producing a virtual High Definition image. It's not quite as slick as actual HD content, but it is a noticeable improvement on the original picture quality. The update also allows the PlayStation 3 Console to be wirelessly accessed over the Internet using a Sony PSP. The next PSP update (due end of May) will fully enable communication between the consoles & allow you to remotely control & view media stored on your PlayStation 3

Sony revealed today that it has decided to discontinue the 20GB model of the PlayStation 3Sony spokesman: "This is based purely on consumer and retailer demand, which favored the 60-gigabyte model 10 to 1." (Hmmm...
