WoW March Confirms Ron Paul as Internet's Candidate
2007-12-28 17:28:00
I don't personally play World of Warcraft, but on January 1st WoW players are going to march for Ron Paul for some reason. I'm not sure exactly what the cause is, I guess just to get him elected, but it seems sort of weird and pointless to me. The real news about this is that Ron Paul, an underdog Republican candidate for the presidency, is so popular on the series of tubes that are the internets that so many people are taking time from actually playing an MMORPG for this. Some people will inevitably create new characters in that server just to contribute to the march, too.Ron Paul enjoys an incredible lead over other candidates online, primarily because of his defiance to the views of the other candidates (and the crowds) at Republican debates. People who are either not politically active or disillusioned with both parties find Ron Paul's libertarian attitude refreshing, and feel empowered because he's not technically an independent candidate, either. No taxes and no government...

Crumpled Tin Awards: Sports Games
2007-12-27 22:06:00
In the spirit of the season, that being the making of top ten lists and yearly awards, I hereby inaugurate the First Annual Crumpled Tin Awards . These really are (mostly) for the best games, but will have to be made out of crumpled tin. After all, this site is still noncommercial so I can barely afford the shipping here. But, I've cornered the market on useless old tin and various metals, so that's what the trophies will be. I've got a poll on the sidebar for you to vote for Game of the Year. It's not like whoever gets the most votes wins, because I decide which game I liked the most, but vote anyway and maybe I'll see your point. Anyway, today's Crumpled Tin Award is for the best Sports game of 2007. This will actually require two awards to be given out, I've decided. First:The Crumpled Tin for Best Sports Game of the Year goes to:Skate by EA CanadaMy personal favorite game of the year, and the one I made the most money off of when I got 60 bucks for writing an FAQ for it. ...

Review: Portal
2007-12-26 22:20:00
Sorry, returning visitors (that's right, both of you) that I didn't make a post on Christmas Day, but I was too busy *reviewing* Portal along with The Orange Box. This post will take some time to comment on Portal as evaluated on the Playstation 3, though it is of course also available (and has been for a long time) on the Xbox 360 and PC. I should likely set up a scheme for all of my reviews, so let's say... 10 points for each category. In case you're not familiar with Portal, it's a sort of puzzle shooter involving a single gun that shoots portals. These portals (blue and orange) travel to each other, so if you enter the blue one, you'll come out the orange one and vice versa. This simple mechanic is necessary to pass all of the obstacles the game throws at you. The unofficial Flash game can be found online, and it'll introduce the general mechanics of the game. Graphics: 9 / 10It's the Half-Life 2 engine we're using here, so it looks pretty good. The game intentionally ...

How-to: Beat Boxhead: 2Play Rooms
2007-12-24 19:14:00
Here's a neat little exploit to beat the game Boxhead: 2Play Rooms on Kongregate.com. I promoted the site in an earlier post, because it's my newest little online obsession. If you're already a member of the site, this trick will earn you the Meaning of Death Badge worth 15 points. First of all, here's a picture of how the exploit works. Click on it if it's too small for you.Load up the game, and turn the difficulty on the options to "nightmare". Be sure to also switch off object collision, devils, and friendly fire as well, just to be safe. Play the level called "Mazey". Once it begins, run to the bottom of the map as shown on the picture to set up three fake walls across the path, leaving the opening at the top. Then pull out your pistol and hold the shoot key down. Make sure to stay a bit behind the opening, and you should be clear for well through level 42. The zombies will funnel directly into your unlimited pistol ammo forever. You may or may not need to turn your screensa...

Politics: Which Candidates Support Gamers?
2007-12-23 19:51:00
In the elections next November (in America, sorry if my audience extends further than I thought) certain candidates make it a selling point that they'll legislate against mature video games and others want the industry to regulate itself (i.e. not ban mature video games for anybody, because they enjoy making money as they should). Unfortunately, the ones that want to ban mature games to some extent are actually the frontrunners for both parties right now. Here's an idea of what we know on the politicians' public stances on video games:Hillary Clinton (D): For legislation against video games. As senator, Hillary was a leading lady in the campaign against video gaming for minors after the hot coffee scandal in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. Her Family Entertainment Protection Act was to set up fines to any store managers that sold M-rated games (practically every game on the market, it seems now) to minors. If this had happened when I was a minor, I would likely have committed suic...

What's that, Mario? You've got a Christmas message?
2007-12-22 18:49:00
Mario really should speak Italian more often. It sounds even cuter than the usual "Woo hoo!", and "Wa Haa!", don't you think?

Bad Sales for Christmas Hits
2007-12-21 02:40:00
What's wrong with all the shoppers this year? It's as though they're actually being creative with their gifts (or maybe just cheap) and buying their kids or whoever old games or special games instead of the big one the companies are all pushing for their Christmas sales. For instance, the PS3's big exclusive right now is Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, and it had pretty disappointing sales figures for when it was released. Super Mario Galaxy, clearly the frontrunner for the Wii, undersold as well. The 360 doesn't have a big game for Christmas really, they're still probably pumping Bioshock and Halo 3, but Mass Effect is a new one that's not getting as much attention as it might should.I guess I don't have much of a point here in the end, but why are the big, new games underselling when it's Christmas? It's as if the Christmas season for video games has shifted to early the next year now, when Metal Gear Solid 4 and other big, delayed games are going to finally come out. Save ...

Mercury News Interviews Jack Tretton
2007-12-19 01:02:00
Mercury News interviewed the President and CEO of Sony's American division in their paper and online today and I'm here to present some of the more important sections of it in the form of a boxing match to hopefully make it a bit more amusing. The interviewer was Dean Takahashi, and the responses at the bottom of the page were really against his form of interviewing, claiming that he was overrepresenting the competitors. I think that's a bit unfair, but if there's a round where he overrepresents them, then I'll call the round in favor of Jack .Jack on the other hand is known for being a bit contentious in interviews, and has said some things in defense of the Playstation 3 that were crazy or just untrue. He fights. I can guarantee there'll be plenty of statistic-manipulating on his side.Well, here we go... Let's get it on!Round 1:Q: What do those bigger accomplishments at the top of your list include then? A: Well, I think the fact that we’re a three platform company for the ...

How-to: Improve Your Score in Skate
2007-12-19 01:01:00
These tips are for the game Skate from EA Canada a couple of months ago that broke Tony Hawk's then-unrivalled control of the skateboarding game industry. It uses a clever control system involving the two analog sticks more than the face buttons, and is really a terrific game if you haven't picked it up yet. It's definitely my favorite for the Playstation 3 so far, and a full walkthrough (written by yours truly) can be found here. Anyway, on to the tips:Tip #1: Recognize the pop differences between the different flip tricks. Your flip tricks pop higher if you do the motion faster on the stick, which can only be practiced to improve, but you need to know how high you need to get and adjust what trick you do based on that. This is because the harder flip tricks simply cannot be done as quickly as the simpler ones, so for a tight jump you need to stick with a heelflip rather than your patent nollie laser flip.Tip #2: Spin. All the freakin' time. This makes your moves a bit less sta...

An Analysis of Assassin's Creed and its Reviews
2007-12-19 01:00:00
Ubisoft's new video game Assassin's Creed for the PS3 and Xbox360 (and technically the DS in a couple of months, but whatever) provoked a surprisingly harsh reaction from reviewers after its long-awaited release. The game had been hyped for an incredibly long time, even I can remember hearing about it first at least a year ago. Despite its hype and incredible sales, the reviews from IGN and EGM placed the game at very average scores, being 7.5 and an average of 5.8 respectively. In video game reviewing today, a seven is about as low as a reviewer can possibly go for a serious game in a review that's not just coming up with creative ways to bash the game. These reviews cited a number of apparently unforgivable issues with the game. Some reviews claimed the game had very repetitive gameplay, a "one-button" combat system, and "moronic" AI. The information gathering missions reoccurred too often and weren't distinguishable enough from one another. The combat only required the player ...

Welcome to the Wii PlayBox 360.3 (and PC) blog!
2007-12-19 00:48:00
I have created this blog to share my great interest in gaming and gaming industry news in blog form. The Wii PlayBox 360.3 blog is going to bring you news from all systems of gaming, basically whatever I feel knowledgable about and want to write on. Here's the current plan for the sort of posts you'll find here, several of which are coming up in this flurry of first-day posts:Industry news, with my opinions about it spliced in so much, you'll think you're playing Bioshock again.Game reviews, though don't expect them for games on systems exclusive to systems other than the Playstation 3, PSP, and PC, because I'm not going to buy the other systems just for this start-up blog.How-to articles on specific gaming problems, because I think I'm better than you. That's right, I said it.And... uh... More! Please leave comments wherever you can, because until I get advertiser revenue or something, it's the only way I'll ever know anyone even looked at this page. If you can't think of...
