PowerPlay Blog will be back soon!
2008-05-06 15:10:00 A temporary semi-withdrawal from gaming, but how can I ever sustain from it for long? What happened to my Xbox 360 and DS during this period?During this period of 'semi-withdrawal', my Xbox 360 hasn't seen a new game disc inserted into its drive for more than 4 months. Burnout Paradise was the last game my Xbox 360 saw, but I never really got into it and since I wasn't playing any new Xbox 360 game, I decided not to renew my Xbox Live Gold subscription which ended in February. But fortunately for my DS, it saw some action in Ninja Gaiden: Dragon Sword (which is impressive), Teenage Zombies: Invasion of Alien Brain Thingys (which is excruciatingly boring and mind-numbing) and most recently, Iron Man (which I must say is surprisingly acceptable for a movie tie-in).What can you expect?A review of Iron Man for DS on this blog soon! Just remember to check back. Hm. I would like to have Ninja Gaiden 2 and Race Driver GRID in June (both Xbox 360) too. And I would also like to see how Rac... More About: Blog , Back
the river flows
2008-02-11 14:01:00 After being overwhelmed by the demands of studies and social networking tools, I have decided to temporarily withdraw from gaming until 2011. This withdrawal period may last longer than forecasted, but I still do keep up with gaming by checking up on gaming websites regularly and reading game magazines. It is sad to withdraw from this hobby after 6 years of hardcore gaming, but my ultimate ambition is still to be a videogame journalist, a dream I have been harboring since 2004, so hardcore gaming as a hobby, and hopefully as a career, will still surface one day. However, you can continue to support me by reading my articles at my new poem blog that touches on personal life. http://www.mrone-theriverflows.blogspot.c om/ More About: River
Game Review - Call of Duty 4:Modern Warfare
2008-01-08 15:19:00 Modern perfection.More than 2 years ago when I decided to dive right into the WW2 FPS genre, I picked Call of Duty 2. At the time of the purchase, it was one of the newest WW2 games and though I hadn?t really experienced any prior Call of Duty games, I had no problems getting into Call of Duty 2. But Call of Duty 2 was much more than just an ordinary gaming experience for me ? it was a memorable experience. Its single-player was in every way cinematic, atmospheric and intense, with a solid multiplayer component backing it up. Fast forward to today, and what you have is Call of Duty 4, the official successor to Call of Duty 2. If Call of Duty 2 was excellent, then make no mistake: Call of Duty 4 is perfect ? everything has been executed with unerring precision. Infinity Ward has delivered yet another flawless and immersive gaming experience in Call of Duty 4, which still manages to improve greatly on its predecessor in several ways.Perhaps the single, biggest change from Call of Duty... Game Review: Ultimate Mortal Kombat
2007-12-28 13:09:00 Boon to newbies and nostalgic gamers, but bane to veterans. There seem to be a handful of classics making a return to the DS this year, including Contra 4 and the games in Namco Museum DS. Ultimate Mortal Kombat is another one of those games, packing in arcade classic Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 and Puzzle Kombat from the more recent Mortal Kombat Deception. Having experienced neither the original arcade UMK3 nor the puzzle game in Deception, I must say that Ultimate Mortal Kombat is really my first brush with the long-running Mortal Kombat franchise ? it is a fresh experience. And it turned out quite well.Essentially a 2D fighter, UMK3 still holds up well after so many years. There is a great selection of characters available with some unlockables to boot. Typical of conventional fighters, controls are made up of convoluted combined button presses, which I am not too fond of. It should be a breeze for Mortal Kombat veterans, but for newbies like me, Other Ocean Interactive, which handl... More About: Review , Game
Foward 2008: DS Gaming in 2008
2007-12-24 04:32:00 A general look at DS gaming in 2008 , the trends, what to expect, personal commentaries, rumors, and wishes and hopes for the DS in 2008.2007 was a consummate example of Nintendo?s dominance of the gaming handheld market. With the DS Lite constantly topping the sales charts throughout the entire year, there is no doubt that the handheld is the hottest gaming device in the world right now, and will still be the hottest in 2008. 2007 is coming to a close, but you can be sure that 2008 is going to be another great year for DS and DS Lite owners.Since the inception of the DS platform in late 2004, there haven?t been many third-party hardcore games for the handheld outside of the occasional RPGs from Square Enix and other smaller publishers, but that?s understandable since the underpowered DS isn?t built for the hardcore crowd, but instead, geared towards the more mainstream audience. For months after the launch of the DS, it was not a surprise to hear someone say that the DS wasn?t capab... More About: Gaming
Game Review - Hot Wheels: Beat That!
2007-12-21 04:20:00 Hotly Terrible: Smash That!Perhaps it was my liking for racing games, or perhaps it was my time spent with Hot Wheels toys during my childhood that prompted me to have a go at Hot Wheels: Beat That! Whatever it was, the game is the closest virtual experience you can get to playing with real Hot Wheels toys. Yes, Hot Wheels: Beat That! is authentically Hot Wheels, so you can be sure of that nostalgia shot if you ever need one, but does it necessarily mean that the game is hot?Surprisingly bare-bones, there are only 3 options that you can select upon booting up your copy of the game. The Challenge mode is basically your career mode that can be found in any other racer, while you can view the unlockable concept artworks in the Media Gallery. Options allow you to tweak the sound and that?s all.The Challenge mode is fairly linear, and although there are 3 game types, namely Quick Race, Eliminator and Rampage, you are forced to progress through all the 12 tracks in the game, each with the... Forward 2008: Personal Commenatries ++
2007-12-18 14:27:00 Personal commentaries on each console, predictions, more on what to expect, juicy tidbits and speculations.Xbox 360Suffice it to say that the Xbox 360 will remain comfortably in its current position through 2008 . While I wouldn?t dare say this 2 years ago when Devil May Cry 4, Bladestorm: The Hundred Years? War, Grand Theft Auto 4 and the like are still PS3 exclusives, they are not now, and there is even a chance that the Xbox 360 versions of these games may even better their PS3 counterparts ? think extra downloadable content and you will know what I mean. The launch of Home on the PS3 may change this, but that will take some time for details to be worked out and for that period of transition, the Xbox 360 will have that all-important edge.Microsoft needs Final Fantasy 13 on the Xbox 360 to increase Japan sales. Meanwhile, in Japan, the Xbox 360 is still not doing well, though Japanese favorites like Ace Combat 6: Fires of Liberation, Ninety-Nine Nights (N3), Eternal Sonata and Blu... Foward 2008: The Newcomers
2007-12-17 12:50:00 The newcomers (non-sequels), the trends, and what to expect next year in the 1st article of Forward 2008 !The year 2007 can be seen as one of the greatest year in gaming with various big hits being released, including Halo 3, The Orange Box, The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass, Super Mario Galaxy and Mass Effect. But now that 2007 is about to end, any gamer would be wont to go into a contemplative mood with the thought of what games 2008 would deliver or even what games one would add to one?s ever expanding library of games. The answers, it seem, would be far from being simple as a check on the scheduled-games list revealed a number of sequels on the way. You name it ? almost every well-known franchise has got a sequel (or follow-up) coming in 2008. Resident Evil 5, Silent Hill 5, Devil May Cry 4, Soul Calibur 4, Grand Theft Auto 4, Metal Gear Solid 4: Gun of the Patriots, Guilty Gear 2 Overture (if it ever gets translated into English), Grand Turismo 5, Fable 2, Mario Kart Wii, S... SUPER Rant: An Equation Unequalled
2007-12-14 05:04:00 ^ Pictorial MathematicsThe ubiquitous equal sign is represented by a set of double parallel lines. That?s simple for the naked eye to interpret. But just like looking at bacteria using a microscope, it takes one a while to digest what a particular equal sign really means. The above image may seem a tad confusing. What does that equal sign mean to you? Does it mean that Offroad Extreme Special Edition costs as much as 4 pairs of Big Mac Value Meals or a Brain Age 2 game and a DS Lite Smart Case? Or would you say the quality of Offroad Extreme Special Edition is comparable to that of the Big Mac Value Meals or the DS game and DS Lite accessory? Or does that equal sign annotate that the time spent to complete the Wii game is as much as that spent to consume all 8 Big Mac Value Meals? Whatever your interpretation is, the above equal sign is used to indicate cost. In other words, an Offroad Extreme Special Edition Wii game can cost as much as (or almost as much as) 8 Big Mac Value Meals ... More About: Super , Rant , Quat

Game Review:Mario Party DS
2007-11-30 07:35:00 The acme of party indulgence. There isn?t a time when a Mario game disappointed me. There isn?t a time when I didn?t enjoy a Mario game tremendously. Previous Mario games that I have played before reflect these statements well ? Mario Kart DS, Mario and Luigi: Partners in Time and New Super Mario Bros. Enter my fourth Mario game, Mario Party DS, which is another one of those archetypal Mario games. Inevitable venial faults aside, Mario Party DS is one brilliantly constructed game.As it name suggests, Mario Party DS is a mini-game compilation. But to say that it is merely a mini-game compilation would be to undermine its overwhelming content. In fact, Mario Party DS is a triple catch ? sure, it is a mini-game compilation, but it is also a virtual board game and a puzzle game! A mindless mish-mash package of sorts this isn?t for everything integrated so beautifully together. The first components of the game that you will probably encounter would be the virtual board game and mini-games... More About: Review , Game
Achievement Unlocked! Episode 3
2007-11-27 09:14:00 This episode is especially dedicated to the best and worst in DS in 2007. Enjoy!BEST DS GAME OF 2007The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass^ A new and refreshing way to play Zelda. We knew Phantom Hourglass would be a hit, didn?t we? It turned out that the game isn?t only a hit, but also one that exceeded all expectations ? one that is truly the BEST DS game of 2007. Without a vestige of doubt, Phantom Hourglass is second to none and that can be seen in its design and its music. I wouldn?t blame you for thinking that the game was treading on a knife-edge when you first started playing the game because for sure, the all touch-screen controls would need some getting used to. But it will take you just under a minute to discover that the control scheme is nothing but an act of genius for everything?s so intuitive and responsive ? which comes the question: Wouldn?t it be awesome if touch-screen controls for all DS games could be this good?Phantom Hourglass is one of those puzzle-heavy acti... Game Review:Rayman Raving Rabbids 2
2007-11-22 13:56:00 Rayman nowhere to be seen. Earlier this year, Ubisoft released Rayman Raving Rabbids on the DS. Though of the same name as the Wii and Xbox 360 renditions, Ubisoft decided to tweak the modus operandi by introducing some really cool and creative platforming levels which made great use of the various DS features. In between the solid platforming action were some entertaining mini-games. The result was a slick and enjoyable package that is the quintessential of good DS games. In less than a year, Rayman Raving Rabbids 2 landed ? this time on the Wii and DS simultaneously. However, gone are the platforming levels and instead what you have in Rayman Raving Rabbids 2 for the DS is a mini-game compilation that is more reminiscent of the Wii version. But is that necessarily a boon?Basically, the structure of the game is similar to that of the Wii edition. The evil Rabbids have invaded the Earth and they can be found scattered throughout the world. Each part of the world, say Asia or Latina ... More About: Review , Game , Rayman
Game Review:The Orange Box
2007-11-18 13:19:00 5 great ingredients for an outstanding dish. You know you are having a good deal when you are paying for 5 games with the price of 1. No, it isn?t some dream you?re having because such a brilliant package does indeed exist. For your money?s worth (and mine), The Orange Box packs in the original Half-Life 2 that was released 3 years ago on PC and 2 years ago on Xbox, its 2 expansions ? Episode One and Episode Two, first-person puzzle game Portal, with multiplayer game Team Fortress 2 wrapping up the package. A haphazardly-planned package this isn?t for it contains 5 outstanding games, including Half-Life 2, which is the BEST game I have played to date. The Orange Box impresses on first sight. Before you even decide on what to start playing with (yes, there is no order as to which game you must play first), you will be facing the slickest menu interface yet ever since Colin Mcrae DiRT, providing easy access to any of the 5 components. At any time during a game, The Orange Box will also... More About: Review , Game
Game Review - Call of Duty 4:Modern Warfare
2007-11-15 03:51:00 Should you heed the call? The DS line-up this year has been nothing short of surprises, from the arrival of Resident Evil-esque Dementium: The Ward, to WWE?s debut on the handheld, to the return of classics like Contra 4 and Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3. Perhaps none is more shocking than Activison?s Call of Duty 4. In Call of Duty , Activison has crafted a game that possesses one of the most engaging gameplay and one of ineffable aural immersion. If you have been harboring any doubts about Call of Duty 4 for the DS, rest assured you are the not the only one because I had my doubts as well. But to say that Call of Duty 4 is not going to function on the DS is erroneous, for Activison has shown that the game is indeed accomplishable on the handheld, but to what extent? For DS owners who have never played any of the prior Call of Duty games before, here?s your chance. What you are getting in Call of Duty 4 for DS is essentially a shrinked-down version of its console counterpart, but to merely... More About: Review , Game , Modern
Games of 2007: #1 - #5
2007-11-13 13:01:00 Good ?ol 2007 is coming to an end real soon and this is the time of the year to reflect on what has happened these past months. Indubitably, 2007 is one hell of a great year in gaming. Now, let me recall all the games (starting from #1 to #5) that I have played this year. I shall let the memories flow.#1. DEAD OR ALIVE 4 (XBOX 360)They never stop fighting, do they? 2007 went off to a sluggish start with no big games in sight. Now, that would be a great opportunity to flip through the back catalog and that I did ? so here?s what I found for a time filler! The game in question is Dead or Alive 4 and having played its predecessor, Dead or Alive 3, before, I more or less knew what to expect from the 4th game. Basically, Dead or Alive 4 features the entire cast of fighters available in Dead or Alive 3 and puts in a few more. The most surprise inclusion in the game is unlockable character Master Chief (or as some people put it: his look-alike) from the Halo series. The many modes are stil... More About: Games
Game Review - Bleach:The Blade of Fate
2007-11-08 08:13:00 Behold the brillance. It has been ages since the DS last seen a respectable fighting game, which if you don?t already know, is Guilty Gear: Dust Strikers. This year, another fighting game makes its entrance onto the venerable handheld. Bleach : The Blade of Fate has already been released in Japan for over a year, but I haven?t played that before since I am not conversant with the language, so of course, I am glad that Sega finally translated Bleach into English and brought the game here. Prior to playing Bleach, I did not have any knowledge of it since I don?t watch Anime programs, but what I do know is that Bleach: The Blade of Fate is one enjoyable game whose game card you will keep in your DS for a while. Yes, it is the DS?s best fighting game, but that?s no surprise either. One would be quick to sideline a fighting game if one isn?t a hardcore fighting fan or one isn?t fond of complicated button presses traditional of typical fighters, but know you must ? Bleach isn?t your stereoty... More About: Review , Game
Game Review:Halo 3
2007-11-04 06:13:00 A breath-taking finale to a monolithic trilogy.Halo burst into the gaming scene with the Xbox in 2001. Halo was visually impressive, musically captivating and its gameplay and controls set a benchmark for console shooters for the many years after. Halo 2 arrived with much anticipation 3 full years later and it brought along with it a huge bag of surprises, including new weapons, new enemies and so on and so forth. As if replicating a sense of déjà vu, Bungie once again delivered a Halo game another 3 years after Halo 2. And thank goodness Bungie has made the wait worthwhile for fans and casual players alike. Halo 3 is definitely meaner, more packed with hunky-dory stuff, and there is no denying that this is one of the best finales to any videogame trilogy anyone could ask for.If you could remember the events from Halo 2, you must have known that the game ended on a cliffhanger that left everyone tearing out their hair. Fortunately, Bungie decided not to give anyone a heart attack in... More About: Review , Game
Game Review - The Legend of Zelda:Phantom Hourglass
2007-10-27 13:14:00 DS Game of the Year contender. For the past few years and beyond, the word Nintendo has been synonymous with the Zelda franchise among others. For sure, iteration upon iteration of Zelda games never cease to impress gamers, whether you are looking at the GameCube, the GBA or the N64. Unsurprisingly, it is only a matter of time before a Zelda game shows up on the 3 years old DS and that it happened. The game in question is The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass, which is easily one of the best DS games this year. To set the record straight, Phantom Hourglass is my first Zelda game since I do not own any Nintendo console, save for the DS, of course. What came next totally blew me off ? the visuals, the musical score, the several perplexing puzzles, the vast dungeons ? yeah, almost everything. In short, if you have money for only one DS game this year, get Phantom Hourglass.Upon starting the single-player adventure, you will be thrusted into the world of Zelda with some fantastic cinema... 2007-10-19 15:15:00 It is a problem that occurs often ? you would have to wait for me to fully complete a game before the full review is written. Well, I hereby present to you this new feature that you will be seeing more of in the future. In Snack Bar Review , I will give you quick impressions on games that I am going to finish soon or have not completed so you will know earlier whether the games you are wanting to buy are up to mark or not.:::::: Race Driver : Create and Race :::::: For more than a year, there is only a single DS racing game that I can truly recommend to you ? that is, Mario Kart DS. But now, things are different with Codemasters? offering, Race Driver. Unlike Mario Kart DS, which has a more arcade-like style of racing, Race Driver is more of a driving simulator. And it turned out pretty good too. Race Driver will be to DS owners like what Forza Motorsport 2 is to Xbox 360 owners. Graphics are surprisingly crisp, the career mode, or World Tour, as it is known in Race Driver, will offer... More About: Zelda , Bleach
Game Review - Medal of Honor: Airborne
2007-09-27 13:48:00 Does it deserve a medal? Why do we want to play another WW2 game again when year upon year, we are essentially playing out the same events over and over again? It may be this simple question that was asked before Medal of Honor : Airborne was developed. For the first time in the many years of history of WW2 games, EA brings something unique across the table ? you start each mission by parachuting down from the sky and deciding which location is the best for you to begin the fight. You could decide to land on the rooftop, so that you could snipe some Nazis off first, or you could land directly on top of your objective, so that you waste no time in planting the charge on the Tiger Tank to destroy it. Ultimately, the decision is yours. But is this mechanism just a gimmick, or is it so much more than that? Each of the 6 levels begins interestingly enough, with you and your fellow soldiers in the plane chatting with each other and cracking occasional jokes. These moments are short-lived, t... More About: Review , Game

Game Review - Worms:Open Warfare 2
2007-09-22 05:48:00 More is good.If the experience of my debut Worms game is anything to go by, I must say that Worms fully deserves to be recommended to everyone. From bottom to top, the latest iteration of Worms, Open Warfare 2, is a solid game providing tons of options, be it in the gameplay department, choice of maps or variety of weapons. Basically, Worms: Open Warfare 2 is a turn-based strategy cum platformer 2D game, but to see its confusing genre mix and merely dismiss it would be doing yourself a disservice. You will find out why soon enough. For those of you who have never played any Worms game before, I will give you a quick introduction. As I mentioned earlier, Worms: Open Warfare 2 is a turn-based strategy game. You start out with your (combat) worms scattered throughout the landscape, which well, will have various platforms. At every turn, you and your opponents will be given a limited amount of time to select your weapon and attack your opponents. Being a platformer, the game also allows ... More About: Review , Game

Logitech has what it calls the Freespace motion sensing technology built into the mouse, giving the mouse the ability to be used in the air. And just like the Wii remote, a few flicks and twists of your wrists will get the MX Air into action in no time. 2007-08-26 04:29:00 Boot camp for your brain - organized with considerable success.Admit it! SUPER Rant: Are You Game Enough for PC?
2007-08-17 02:58:00 ^ Your Money Card needs to be changed every few years.I was trying hard not to get annoyed as my units chugged along slowly on the screen. When I moved my cursor to view the other parts of the map, the screen stuttered along. There was a noticeable slowdown in the game performance. Supreme Commander just showed me why I should not be a PC gamer anytime soon. My computer was not able to handle the ridiculous demands that the game was throwing at it. If you do not already know this, ignore the recommended system requirements of 1GB RAM at the back of the Supreme Commander game box. Alright, you should have a minimum of 2GB RAM instead. And remember to have a high-end graphics card to experience the game in its full glory at almost maximum settings, anything lesser and you will have to contend with the watered-down version of the game (low settings) in order for your game to run smoother (take note: smoother only, not smoothly). ^ When Crysis arrives, it will be crisis for your PC!See?... More articles from this author:2007-08-11 07:51:00 This game is perfect. Almost.Departing from Forza Motorsport 2, I opened the newly-bought DiRT and a certain sense of excitement tickled me. I was looking for a fresh experience after slogging through several energy-draining stages in Forza Motorsport 2. I was looking for something more thrilling, something more different, something more unique, and something more interesting. I popped the DiRT game disc into my Xbox 360. Right from the start, DiRT blew me away. DiRT is an amazing game, but what made the game so enjoyable?Certainly, the developers of DiRT know how to impress players from the very beginning, but what is more astonishing is, how they have managed to leave me with that lasting impression even after I have completed the game. The art of good impression starts from the moment you create a save account for the game on your hard disk ? the interface is, as I wished, different and unique from what the other games currently on the market have ? it is simply, in a league of i...
