FiringSquad Editors Challenge draws to a close!
2007-05-10 20:44:00 You might recall a few older posts on this blog discussing a writing competition being hosted by FiringSquad. I was eliminated in the previous round, making it to a 4th place finish - since then the remaining two competitors have received their hardware and written up new articles for a final showdown! Your vote could help decide the victor in this epic showdown between six very well-written entries. Both competitors have assembled similar PCs from hardware received from FiringSquad's sponsors for this competition. Each has written an article on how they assembled it, another article on how it performed and a final article detailing their conclusion. The contest is proving to be a very close one - with all entries being well-worth a read for anyone interested in upgrading their PC anytime soon, or simply interested in PC gaming/hardware in general. If you vote you might even help decide who the next FiringSquad editor will be!So by all means - browse on o... More About: Editors , Close , Challenge , Hall , Editor
The Firewall Experience
2007-05-09 21:07:00 About two weeks ago my dad decided to try something new with our network. He enabled our router's hardware firewall at long last in an attempt to make our network more secure. I immediately knew this wasn't going to work as intended, but my dad thought it was a good idea so I let him at it for a while. Now you have to realize that my dad's job is to make corporate networks more secure, so he knows his stuff. He also got this idea from his job, probably not quite realizing what would happen with a gamer behind the PC rather than an office worker. Anyway, when he was done he came upstairs and told me to compile a list of everything that didn't work - it'd have been a lot easier to just list the things that did work...Upon rebooting my system most of my start-up applications wouldn't function properly. I couldn't connect to MSN, Skype or Xfire services. The only thing that did work was updating my Peerguardian 2 protection files. And of course, as you ... Screenshot of the Week #15
2007-05-07 21:44:00 Just like every other week, here's yet another Screenshot of the Week feature! Once again I've managed to find an remarkable screenshot hidden somewhere amongst my collection of gaming pictures which I've decided to share with you below. The details regarding the when, where and why - are listed below the screenshot as usual - be certain to check it out! Of course you can expect yet another screenshot next week!Week #15Unreal Tournament 2004Team Arena MasterStory: I made this screenshot today at the end of a public server TAM match. I finally decided to turn up the visual detail again - to bring some more life to the constant UT2004 games - and, obviously, this didn't prove detrimental to my play at all. After all, here I am topping the server with 29 kills and just 6 deaths. As for the map this was on? It's DM-Rankin - the map included in the UT2004 demo and one of the most popular multiplayer maps in the game - also one of the better maps.Game: Unreal Tournament 2004: Team Ar... More About: Cree
Game of the Week #15
2007-05-06 21:53:00 Here's a new Game of the Week feature once more! In case you didn't know - every week I write up an entry about the games I played in the past week. Out of all those games one ends up receiving the title of Game of the Week . So if you're interested in knowing what this blogger played in the past week, in between writing blog posts then please do read on!Week #15 (April 30th - May 6th)This week hasn't been filled with a wide variety of different games, much like the previous week. Fortunately I did play some of them old favorites, so I can talk about my experiences with those instead! Yet again I played a bunch of Unreal Tournament 2004 games as well as some more Guild Wars: Nightfall. I didn't bother with any other games this week, but I intend to get back onto playing Neverwinter Nights mods again, as well as perhaps some of those strategy games I bought recently (Company of Heroes, Command & Conquer 3, Heroes of Might & Magic V). So who knows, maybe next week will featur...
News of the Week #14
2007-05-05 22:52:00 The Game Drone might not be just another gaming news blog, but I do touch on the most interesting PC gaming-related bits of news every week in a feature known as 'News of the Week '. It's a regular feature on Thursdays every week (although a bit late this particular week) and all previous (and other news-related) entries can be accessed by selecting the 'news' category in the right-hand menu. Enjoy!Week #14(April 26th - May 5th)I opted to delay the regular News of the Week item by a few days, because the past week has been amazingly quiet. Last week brought us a wave of news - and this week it's hard to find anything worthwhile to talk about at all. Regardless there are a couple bits of news to discuss, so here's what I'll be covering this week: Duke Nukem Forever has turned ten years old - pretty amazing for a game still in development. The announcement of Postal 3 and Mata Hari. The theft of Lineage 3 source code and an amazing one million subscribers for RuneScape. Lastly ...
Guild Wars Second Anniversary Event
2007-05-04 13:00:00 Last weekend was a joyous occasion for Guild Wars players worldwide as the game celebrated it's second anniversary - along with the 1st anniversary of the Factions campaign. ArenaNet had set up special events all over the game world, allowing players to participate in various mini-games while the main towns of each continent were covered in fireworks several times a day. All of this started on Friday, a day before the actual anniversary on the 28th of April, and ended on Monday night. Some of the events planned included the re-opening of the boardwalk in Shing Jae Monestary (Factions campaign) which provided access to some games of chance. Also re-introduced were the beetle races - and a newcomer (I think - because I haven't attended all events) was a Guild Wars variation on dodgeball. With all of these games players could win victory tokens - and these tokens could then be used to purchase unique items from a group of special NPCs scattered throughout the world. Naturally I partic... More About: Event , Anniversary
Game Concept: UT Base Wars
2007-05-03 11:24:00 I intended to introduce this much earlier as another - semi-regularly - recurring feature, but didn't get around to it until now. In this feature I'll discuss a cool idea for a game I came up with - and see how it could be made to actually work well. Come see if you agree with me and would like to make these games come true, or perhaps disagree and don't think it's a good (or new) idea at all. This particular Game Concept is called Base Wars . It's intended as a modification for a game like Unreal Tournament 2004, which features the game mode that this is based upon (Assault). It's not a truly world-shocking idea nor truly very innovative, but it might just prove to be a very enjoyable new twist on a familiar concept. Read on for some details - you might just like it ;)The ConceptBase Wars is a variant of the popular Assault game mode featured in the Unreal Tournament games. The fundamental difference between these game modes is that Base Wars provides each team with a base to ... More About: Once
100 Days and counting!
2007-05-03 10:46:00 That's right - it's already been 100 days since this blog started again on the 24th of January 2007. Since then this blog has already seen over 11000 page views and over 9600 unique visitors. It's certainly exceeded any expectations with an average of almost 100 unique visitors a day, which is still increasing day by day.A lot about this blog has changed since it began. Not only has the entire layout been revamped several times, but it's also seen a lot of new features being added (ranging from click-able Digg buttons to e-mail subscription forms). And while these first 100 days have clearly been about finding a proper format and layout - the next 100 days will be about refining the writing on this blog. In the coming weeks and months I intend to make the weekly features less prominent and lengthy, whereas there will be more actual articles, previews, reviews and guides being uploaded. Similarly I'll strife for more consistency, because as it stands t... More About: Days , Count , Counting

May 2007 - Release Date List
2007-05-01 10:18:00 Welcome to the latest, most up-to-date, list of release dates for all the most interesting upcoming PC games on The Game Drone. As I do every month I've uploaded a fully updated release date list with some entirely new games and many changed dates corresponding to current press statements. Do remember that these release dates are subject to change - depending on the decisions the developers/publishers of these games make along the road. Also note that these are European release dates and the North American release can be a couple of days earlier or later in some cases. This month's release date list is bigger than ever, as it has nearly doubled in size compared to last month's edition. Many dozens of new games were added to the list - and several previously listed games have since been released or pushed back further. Any great upcoming PC game you might be interested in should be accounted for by now, unless no release date for it has been revealed (e.g... More About: List , Release , May 2007 , Lease , Ease
Most Impressive Games #4 - April 2007
2007-04-30 12:18:00 Loads of new PC games are released every month, but which of those games are worth purchasing? I'll be giving an answer to that question every month, in the form of this entry - which lists the most impressive games of the previous month. These games aren't necessarily enjoyable for all, but they're certainly the best games that were released during that month. Unfortunately, where March was a month filled with interesting and great games - April has proven to be a very meager month for PC gamers. I still managed to find three different games to talk about, although they're certainly not at the same level of quality of last month's titles. Regardless - a fair few amongst you aught to enjoy these games quite a bit.April 2007Sam & Max: Reality 2.0The monthly episodic releases of Sam & Max have been doing really well it seems - as the series is already up to it's fifth entry and gradually receiving better and better scores! I haven't gotten a mass of other games to talk about unfortunately - just two, of which I've played only one! These two games are Heroes of Might & Magic V and Guild Wars: Nightfall. Massive Blog Update!
2007-04-28 10:45:00 If you've been here before then you've probably already noticed some of the changes made to The Game Drone in the last couple of days. There were a bunch of new features that I really wanted to add to make reading this site a better experience - and to be honest it really needed a new design that wasn't as overly crowded. I've finished adding new stuff to the blog for now, so I thought it'd be a good idea to provide you with some details as to what I've changed. Before I get to that however, I'd like to thank everyone who has been visiting this blog since I (re)started it in late January. It's been roughly three months since then and The Game Drone has already seen well over 10.000 page views in that time... not to mention a load of awesome people who were kind enough to leave comments, e-mail me or digg some of the entries I've written. Please do keep visiting, leaving comments & digging! The most noticeable change to The Game Drone has to be it's new layout. The previous l... More About: Blog , Update , Mass
Guild Wars - The Sequel
2007-04-27 11:57:00 Roughly a month ago a company called ArenaNet came forth with a surprise announcement: 'Guild Wars will be getting an expansion pack later this year - and we're giving you Guild Wars 2 in a couple of years'. A wealth of information on both games has been revealed since then. I've already covered the upcoming expansion pack in an earlier preview, but now it's time for the real deal - the big one - Guild Wars 2.Many Guild Wars fans already know some about this game - as most fan forums offer small overviews of information. This preview will be a fair bit more in-depth however, offering a compilation of known and confirmed information from magazines, interviews and forum posts. It might be a few years until this game is released - but I'm certain any MMORPG & RPG fan will be interested in the new developments ArenaNet has planned for this fifth entry into the Guild Wars franchise. It sounds very impressive - and you'd be missing out by not reading this entry... so scroll on down... More About: Sequel

The Anime Drone has returned!
2007-04-25 20:45:00 It's been roughly a year since I started working on two blogs at once... one was known as The Game Drone and the other was called - The Anime Drone. Unfortunately both blogs turned inactive as I went on vacation and couldn't blog four times in a row towards the end of 2006. The Game Drone recovered shortly thereafter, in late January of this year, but The A nime Drone was still gone... until now! With the appearance of a veritable armada of awesome new anime this spring season - I have decided to reopen The Anime Drone. Just like this blog it's undergone a massive revision with regards to it's predecessor - and after messing about with layouts for hours on end yesterday I finally managed to launch it again - one year after it's original date. If you're even the slightest bit interested in anime, or want to see what all the fuss is about - then don't forget to click that link and check out The Anime Drone. Video Spotlight - The Tomorrow War trailer
2007-04-24 13:41:00 I was thinking about introducing a recurring feature like this for some time now and finally got around to doing so after spotting an amazing trailer I just had to blog about on GameTrailer s the other day. This won't be a regular weekly or monthly feature, but you can expect a few more similar entries to pop up in the coming weeks and months. It probably won't be limited just to trailers for games either - I might sneak in some fragmovies or machinima. As for the trailer I dug up on GameTrailers yesterday. It's a short three and a half minute trailer for an upcoming game by 1C Company that I hadn't even heard about before. All of a sudden the GameTrailers page displayed a new PC game trailer with a picture that seemed like a massive battleship soaring through the sky of a planet - interesting to say the least. And sure enough it started off great with some good-looking footage of a battleship in space... only to suddenly degrade into a display of characters talking. Just as I dec... The guild wars head north!
2007-04-23 21:40:00 Towards the end of this year Guild Wars fans will be able to enjoy the release of a brand new expansion for their favorite game, entitled: Guild Wars : Eye of the North . Contrary to previous Guild Wars games this will be an actual expansion, which means it will require one of the previous chapters to be installed and will not feature solely content for max-level players. It might not feature as much new content as previous chapters (no new continents, less new skills, no new classes) but it'll also go for a lower price tag. Some websites and forums have already featured some basic information on this game, but there hasn't really been any definitive source that compiled all this together into one article - until now. This preview will function as an overview of all the currently known information regarding Guild Wars: Eye of the North, based on various interviews, dev posts and extensive magazine articles. One game I'd love to play - UniversalCentury.net
2007-04-13 13:32:00 Sometimes you run into a game that seems absolutely awesome to play and would be a definite must-buy, but in the end won't be released in your territory - or on your favourite gaming platform. Univ ersal Century: Gundam Online is one such game... a massively multiplayer online role-playing game set in the Universal Century (original) universe of the Gundam franchise. Initially it was going to be released in the United States as well, but things have been so quiet for the past few years that that is looking very unlikely. Regardless - it's a successful game in Japan and it still seems like an awesome game to play. Certainly I'm a Gundam fan so I might be a bit more excited for it than just any gamer, but it's still a concept that could become quite popular even in western countries. As such, I've decided to do a bit of a preview based on the information I know and some actual gameplay footage from western players participating in the Japanese servers. Wh... CellFactor: Revolution - gone gold and... free!?
2007-04-11 20:01:00 The (r)evolutionary first person shooter CellFactor : Revolution , based on a popular techdemo for the AGEIA PhysX hardware technology, has gone gold and will be released for free download on the 8th of May! AGEIA originally announced that it would be a budget title available in stores, but now along with their gold statement they've announced that it will indeed be a free game for all to try. Great news for everyone, right? Well... no, not really. You see, it looks like part of the reason why it won't be available in stores is because the experience for players without an AGEIA PhysX card will be extremely limited - and such a game would just be hard to sell with a straight face (granted - that's just my assumption). Whereas PhysX card owners can enjoy a small singleplayer campaign and full multiplayer access - regular gamers can only enjoy two skirmish maps with computer opponents. Indeed it looks like AGEIA has decided to turn it into more of an extended PhysX demonstration than ... More About: Gold , Free , Gone

Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars - Impressions
2007-04-08 16:21:00 It's been slightly over a week since the highly-anticipated strategy game Comm and & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars hit store shelves worldwide. Many tens of thousands of fans have already gotten their copy, including myself and are absolutely loving this game. To you this entry was written: I'm a gamer who has played both Company of Heroes and Supreme Commander - and has now gotten in about a week's worth of playtime with Tiberium Wars ... and what follows, are my thoughts on the experience - and how this game measures up in the current strategy realm.Unfortunately Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars starts right off with a major disappointment even during installing! Guild Wars massively updated!
2007-04-06 13:49:00 Just yesterday the popular online role-playing game Guild War s received a massive update. Rather than just serving as a means of rebalancing skills and fixing some minor issues, this update also introduced plenty of new interesting features! Since I've recently gotten back to playing Guild Wars , what with purchasing Nightfall and all, I figured I should make a proper overview of the most prominent of these new features on this blog. But wait! Don't turn away just yet, one feature - expanded storage - in particular will be of interest to any Guild Wars fan!Indeed if you had an interest in Guild Wars before but it slowly waned due to annoyances such as tiny storage space or the need for a Guild to be able to compete - then this update should be more than enough to make you race back to it! Better yet it also introduces many new user interface features, audio improvements and visual improvements. Certainly an update to remember!StorageThat's right - ArenaNet finally added more stor...
