Screenshot of the Week #9
2007-03-26 23:01:00
And so the 'Screen shot of the Week ' feature continues on it's regular Monday spot! As I promised last week, we're still in the running as a regular Monday feature. It might seem to be posted up a tad late, but don't forget we only just this night switched to summer time so I'm used to it being 1 hour earlier! As always I've picked a somehow unusual screenshot from my collection to feature in a blog entry - and you can read all about it below. Do check back next week - as Monday will feature yet another new screenshot for you to enjoy!Week #9Command & Conquer 3:Tiberium WarsStory: In order to provide a proper analysis of the demo for an entry I posted on this blog yesterday, I played some more Command & Conquer 3 skirmish matches recently. The screenshot above is my victory screen after defeating my Nod opponent with overwhelming GDI force. It's an absolutely awesome game if you're into classic RTS gameplay like me - and I'll report plenty on it when I receive my copy. In f...

CnC3 Demo Impressions
2007-03-25 22:58:00
With Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars scheduled for release in five days (three for you lucky Americans) it was about time for The Game Drone to provide impressions of the demo. It'll be a look at the demo's features and how it compares to predecessors and recent RTS games, while also providing some insight into the additional features present in the full game but not in the demo. Of course you can also download the demo yourself, here.So what is Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars? It's the soon-to-be-released sequel to Command & Conquer: Tiberian Sun (1999). The game features the battle between the forces of the Global Defense Initiative (the good guys) and the Brotherhood of Nod (terrorists of the future). All this is set on an Earth covered by an alien substance known as tiberium, which proves to be an exceedingly valuable resource. It's best described as a futuristic strategy game with a believable touch - the setting is very much an advancement of modern technology as bot...

Game of the Week #9
2007-03-25 09:33:00
I play various games all the time - and every week I'll pick out one game that I found particularly enjoyable or impressive, that game will become the Game of the Week . In this entry I'll look back on the various games I played in the past week and one of those games will be that Game of the Week . It's a day late, but I really wanted to include some more CnC3 demo gameplay as well, so here it is!Week #9 (March 17th - March 25th)This week was slightly unusual, because I barely played any Unreal Tournament 2004 - contrary to the previous weeks. What I didn't get in terms of UT2004 gameplay I've made up for in Neverwinter Nights: Aribeth's Redemption and Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars demo gameplay. I'll see about uploading my thoughts on CnC3 later today, but for now you can check out my opinion on Aribeth's Redemption here. Anyway, on to the weekly recap!I've managed to finish the Neverwinter Nights: Hordes of the Underdark campaign with my lawful good Paladin. The final...
The future of Guild Wars
2007-03-24 11:15:00
Earlier this month I reported a supposed scoop from The Inquirer regarding the future of the Guild War s franchise. The first PC Gamer magazines with 13-page Guild Wars specials have now reached subscribers and most of the information reported by The Inquirer has been proven correct, albeit comparatively brief and ever so slightly misleading. Information about the upcoming Guild Wars games is slowly leaking all over fan forums, so I've decided to present to you a complete and accurate list of currently known information regarding the future of the franchise! But before I begin: you might remember me talking about a Guild Wars special feature in the upcoming edition of the gaming magazine (PC Gameplay) I am subscribed to. This has been confirmed and I will be receiving said magazine by the end of the month. That means I'll be writing a follow-up article in about a weeks time including the full details I can gather from said magazine... which will likely be more than I can provide fro...

Mod Review - NWN: Aribeth's Redemption I
2007-03-23 16:21:00
That's right - the very first Game Drone review and it's a Neverwinter Nights module! I really had to start doing some actual review and preview work on this blog, because all the article and regular feature work is getting kind of old. It's great to have all this uniquely informative content, but this is also a blog so it's about time that I actually started sharing my opinion on various games with you.... so here it is - the very first Game Drone review!I recently completed the official campaign of Neverwinter Nights: Hordes of the Underdark, which means I've now finally played through all of the official content for NWN. Yet after this campaign I was still interested in playing some more of the original NWN game, so I decided to download some of the top rated user-made modules over at NWVault. One of these modules was named Aribeth's Rede mption by a certain Daniel Muth.    This module attracted my attention because it's a continuation upon the story of ...

An Editor's Challenge
2007-03-22 23:13:00
As you probably know by now, FiringSquad is organizing an Edit or's Challenge contest in which I am participating. The winner of said contest actually gets to be an editor for FiringSquad! In the second round I submitted an article about optimizing ones Logitech G5 Laser mouse, which I've also published on this blog here. I was amongst 23 other editors in this second round of the competition and only 10 were to proceed to the next round... and to be honest, things were tough - nearly all of the articles were of amazing quality and worthy of proceeding to the next round - and all the user review scores were very close. The deciding factor would be the opinions of the current FiringSquad editors themselves. So did I make it? Yes, I did! That's right, I'm one of the 10 who went through to the Challenge Round as well as the 3rd Round. That means that right now I'm blogging some new things up on FiringSquad to introduce myself to the readers, as part of the Challenge Round. Then a few...

Gamer Lingo - understanding online gamers
2007-03-21 00:27:00
So you're new to gaming and decide to head online for the first time - chances are you'll have an unforgettable, but also rather confusing experience. Online gamers have developed their own language of sorts over the years - a language which can be hard to understand for newcomers, especially when there are few people willing to help you out. There are some articles on the topic to find online, but most of them don't cover a whole lot - and usually only specifically for a single genre of games. So what's a new gamer to do then?      Search no more! This article should answer most of your questions regarding unusual acronyms and words commonly used by gamers in various genres of online games. It probably won't cover every instance of gamer lingo you're going to encounter (namely game-specific lingo), but it'll cover all the basics you'll need to start out on your journey towards becoming a veteran online gamer. Enjoy!General LingoThese are the kinds of...

Finally, with this entry the 'Screen shot of the Week ' feature returns to it's regular Monday spot! It's been published rather irregularly as of late, but I'll make sure to keep it as a regular Monday feature from now on. As always I've picked a somehow unusual screenshot from my collection to feature in a blog entry - and you can read all about it below. Do check back next week - as Monday will feature yet another new screenshot for you to enjoy!Week #8Neverwinter Nights:Hordes of the UnderdarkStory: Only two days ago I reported that I had finally picked up playing Neverwinter Nights again, trying to complete it's final expansion pack 'Hordes of the Underdark'. And now I've managed to play through the entire campaign (after roughly 25-30 hours ; that's a lengthy campaign for a mere expansion!) and got some nice screenshots from this, admittedly rather dated, cRPG. The screenshot you see above is from the second act in the campaign, in the midst of a cutscene in which I'm...

News of the Week #8
2007-03-18 23:29:00
This is a blog about PC gaming, so it's only natural that I cover some PC gaming related news, even though this is not a news blog. So I'm posting a recap of the most important PC gaming-related news every week. This feature is known as the 'News of the Week ' - and can be accessed from the right-hand menu by clicking either the 'news' or 'weekly' categories...Week #8(March 11th - March 18th)As usual there isn't too much to report, but I've done my best to gather a couple of interesting news-items to cover regardless. Don't expect any amazing announcements like new Guild Wars chapters or anything of the sort, but there is some interesting stuff that's been thrown around the vast interweb this past week. So what kind of news can you expect this week? I'll be covering a bit of the FiringSquad Editor's Challenge, in which I'm also participating, as well as some more C&C3 news, World in Conflict videos, an absolutely amazing UT'99 music video & of course the new seaso...

In this entry I'll look back on the various games I played in the past week and one of those games will be that Game of the Week .Week #8 (March 12th - March 17th)I've played several different games this week - namely Unreal Tournament 2004 and Neverwinter Nights: Hordes of the Underdark. I also fired up Guild Wars: Nightfall - which I've recently purchased - for a bit, but haven't really gotten around to playing it yet. I'm currently really focusing on finishing the final Neverwinter Nights expansion pack so that received most of my attention this week, although I got a bit of UT2004 playtime in as well. Anyway, on to the weekly recap...I played Neverwinter Nights: Hordes of the Underdark in an attempt to finally finish the entire Neverwinter Nights storyline. 2007-03-16 12:29:00
I apologize for the late entry, but here it finally is, the 7th 'Screen shot of the Week '. As always I've picked a somehow unusual screenshot from my collection to feature in a blog entry - and you can read all about it below. Next week will feature the 'Screenshot of the Week' on it's usual day, Monday, again. Enjoy!Week #7Guild WarsBeta TestStory: This screenshot was taken during the final Beta Weekend Event of Guild Wars: Prophecies. I had been playing quite a bit of Tombs (now known as Heroes Ascent) matches, which is essentially an on-going PvP tournament in the world of Guild Wars. Rather than going straight back in I decided to hang out with a few people in my district and have some fun, so we started dancing and 'testing' various emotes.     This resulted in a couple of beautiful screenshots, such as the one you can see above. The graphics were great, even back then - and have only improved with the releases of Factions and Nightfall. Anyway, I...

Fresh Game Drone Activity!
2007-03-15 19:17:00
The Game Drone has received an overhaul, as you've probably noticed by now. I had slowly been introducing new features over the past couple of days - and finished it off today with a complete rework of the layout in an attempt to make it slightly easier to navigate. This move does mean that anyone in a low resolution (800x600 or lower - used by only a tiny minority of visitors) will have some difficulty viewing this website, but it should make the experience more intuitive for anyone on a higher resolution (1024x768 or higher).     The Game Drone is swiftly becoming a more and more popular blog and in order to support and sustain this growth I've also added a bunch of new features other than the mere layout change. A blog needs to be updated to keep up with the latest developments and allow it's visitors to access the blog the way they want it, which I hope I've done with this new wave of updates. Anyway, I've covered each of the new features below...Layou...

Playing your G5 to the Max!
2007-03-14 23:09:00
This is a repost of an article I recently wrote for the FiringSquad Editor's Challenge. If you like it, then please do vote for it, here, in the Editor's Challenge. You vote could help me advance to the next round! The Logitech G5 is a laser mouse that is being marketed as a truly essential tool for gaming. Unfortunately, extensive tests have proven that it's performance, compared to some of the better optical mice, leaves something to be desired. The G5 is know to be a picky mouse, which doesn't like a lot of gaming surfaces - it's also known to respond inaccurately when moving at high speeds. So does this mean you're screwed if you bought this mouse - thinking it was going to take your aim to the next level? Well... no, not entirely...After my Razer Diamondback broke on me, I decided to purchase my very first Logitech mouse - the G5. Initially the G5's performance seemed a slight bit worse than my Diamondback, but I was willing to trade in some of my accuracy for a more comf...

My game is better than yours!
2007-03-13 20:07:00
Everyone likes playing the 'my game is better than yours' game, or at least so it would seem from online forums and irc channels. Whether it's Counter Strike being better than Unreal Tournament, or World of Warcraft better than Guild Wars, there's plenty of discussions to join on forums all over the internet. As you'd expect from an anonymous medium, many of the people participating in these discussions are illiterate idiots who don't know the slightest about debating a topic.     You could consider this entry a rant on my behalf. I sometimes join in on discussions like these and I've seen people use some very weird - and flawed - arguments. In this entry I'd like to take a look at the most over-used and illegitimate argument of them all: 'My game is better than yours, because it has more players'. Enjoy. The ArgumentYou've probably seen it used in just about every game-comparing discussion on the internet: 'My game is better than your, because it h...

Interweb Pirates Abound!
2007-03-12 19:31:00
There's been plenty of discussion about the viability of PC gaming for game developers as of late, due to a panel discussion between a couple of developers, held at the GDC. Apparently Todd Hollenshead from id Software and Michael Capps from Epic Games claim that piracy has forced them to release their formerly PC-only titles on consoles (Doom 3, Unreal Tournament 3). A couple of other, less PC-focused, developers agreed.     It seems that big-name developers are now shifting their focus to 'next-gen' consoles for game development - blaming a 'loss of profits' on piracy. Actual sales figures, even in the United States - land of consoles - dispute this, with even the NPD reporting a growth in PC game sales and they do not count any online retailers, Asian/European sales, indie-games, subscription fees, etc. On the other hand, it's true that piracy seems to have become a lot more popular nowadays, with it becoming more and more accessible. Then again, pira...

In this entry I'll look back on the various games I played in the past week and one of those games will be that Game of the Week .Week #7 (March 3rd - March 12th)I've played several different games this week - namely the CnC3 demo, Dawn of War: Dark Crusade, Unreal Tournament & Unreal Tournament 2004. That's a lot of different games compared to previous weeks, but UT2004 received most of my attention as always. Anyway, on to the weekly recap...I played the Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars demo yet again, but not too much. I did watch the awesome Epileptic Gaming episode with special information on CnC3 and that's got me pumped for the real game, which should be arriving on the 29th of March (26th in North America). I'm really looking forward to trying out the Scrin, it'll be a close call between the GDI and S...

There haven't really been any surprise announcements at the GDC, just a bunch of new information on already known titles such as Stargate Worlds and Gears of War for the PC. The only real surprise revelation turned out to be largely untrue - and resulted in us still not knowing too much more about the upcoming games in the Guild Wars franchise. I wont cover the masses of new previews, you can find plenty of those on just about any major gaming we...
Most Impressive Games #2 - February
2007-03-09 08:09:00
Plenty new PC games are released every month, but which of those games are worth purchasing? I'll be giving an answer to that question every month, in the form of this entry - which lists the Most Impressive Game s of the previous month. These games aren't necesarily - or even usually - enjoyable for all, but they're the best that was released in their genre that month. In February we've seen several more interesting new games released, the following is an overview of the most impressive amongst these.February 2007Supreme CommanderThis is certainly the most talked about & most well-received new release of the month. With C&C3: Tiberium Wars set to release next month, many gamers were wondering whether they should pick up this RTS or wait for Tiberium Wars. So far Supreme Commander is doing well, with it ranking in 2nd in the latest NPD sale stats (for the United States) and clearly gathering a substantial fanbase. However, it has to be said that this game is certainly not for eve...

Screenshot of the Week #6
2007-03-06 17:25:00
You might have noticed the lack of a 'Screen shot of the Week ' feature last week (which was supposed to have been #5) but that's because I had already posted an extensive Unreal Tournament 3 screenshot listing here, which effectively functioned as a big and popular Screenshot of the Week feature. Do not worry, I'm back with more Screenshot of the Week goodness this week - and you can enjoy the new screenshot below...Week #6Command & Conquer 3:Tiberium Wars - DemoStory: This screenshot was taken as I was playing the first GDI mission of the Tiberium Wars campaign, which was titled as a prologue chapter. At the end of this mission you actually get to play around with the good old GDI Ion Cannon once again, so I had plenty of fun blowing the Nod base to smithereens. One minute there's a base with dozens of turrets and troops, the next minute there's a crater in it's place!     As expected the Ion Cannon looks better than ever, as buildings collapse in stages...

More new Guild Wars games announced?
2007-03-05 19:21:00
New announcements regarding the Guild War s franchise have been made on The Inquirer. They claim to have been informed about a new upcoming expansion - not chapter! - in the Guild Wars franchise as well as a sequel franchise. This news has slowly been spreading to other sites as well, even though it has not been confirmed by ArenaNet, NCSoft or any reputable source. The Inquirer is unfortunately also known for not being the most reliable source, so be certain to take this information with a grain of salt. If you want to know any more, then read on below.UpdateGaile Gray, community manager for ArenaNet, has issued a response to this news that was spread by The Inquirer. She states, much like I had feared, that the bulk of the information provided by The Inquirer is either erroneous or misleading. Some of it is true, however we won't know what portion of it is true for a few weeks to come. In the April issue of many gaming magazines (such as PC Game play, PC Zone, PC Gamer, Games Machi...

There's also some more minor news to report, such as the release date for BioShock and some interesting updates for existing games. PC gaming VS console gaming - Final
2007-03-01 17:46:00
In recent years consoles have gotten much more powerful and capable. Rather than merely being gaming platforms, they've now gained online capabilities and turned into media centers. Cons ole s are essentially turning into semi-PCs for in your living room - and the lines between PCs and consoles have began fading. In this series of articles I've taken a look at the pros and cons of gaming on the PC versus consoles. Rather than merely shedding some light on the financial aspects, like in this previous blog entry, I've attempted to take a look at the whole of pros and cons this time. There are good reasons for choosing to play games on the PC over a console, or the other way around, other than merely pricing differences. I hope this series will help some of you see those differences - and will assist anyone currently in doubt between the two in choosing their gaming platform of choice.et     This entry is a recap of all the previous entries. UT3 Gameplay Footage Screenshots

In my previous entry I talked about the new gameplay footage available for Unreal Tournament 3 and what the game seemed to be like in the eyes of an experienced UT player. Now it's time to show off some of the cool screencaps I've made from the video - with some added commentary of course - they might be a little low resolution, but they're worth looking at regardless! When you're done wasting noobs, you can go admire the scenery!Jumping into the fray!New in UT3: crazy flak effects!More close combat than ever before! His ass is on fire - that has to hurt.Capture the Flag has never looked this good!Death from Above!Opponents explode with style...Rocket Launcher grenades are back!Character models and lighting are better than everThe new shock combo looks and sounds rather weakYour teammates are brightly coloured - try not to hit them! The new shock rifle might look flimsy, but it still packs a punch

Unreal Tournament 3 Gameplay Footage
2007-02-27 12:08:00
Some brand new Unreal Tour nament 3 gameplay footage was released a few days ago, which featured DeathMatch and Capture the Flag gameplay. It's a rather controversial video, because it's the first video of regular DeathMatch gameplay in this upcoming FPS game, which many people are looking forward to as the new DeathMatch game of the coming years. Epic hasn't said much about their DM implementation yet, so this is a useful release that aught to give us some hints as to what it will play like. Many people are expecting a blend of UT and UT2004 gameplay, but is that really what we're getting? Now if you're simply interested in watching a cool video of an undoubtedly great upcoming game, then I'll refer you on to GameTrailers - where a user uploaded the video for all to enjoy. You can also head on over to ESReality for a downloadable version and a massive amount of discussion on the topic.    On the other hand, if you're interested in the analysis of said video...

News of the Week #5
2007-02-25 16:52:00
Every week I'll be posting a recap of the most interesting occurrences and news announcements regarding PC gaming that were made in the previous week. This feature is known as the News of the Week - and you can access it in the right menu by clicking News.Week #5 (February 18th - February 25th)This was an extremely quiet week, with almost no news to report at all. Fortunately I managed to find a few tidbits of information to fill this entry with. It's certainly not as much as in previous weeks, but something is still better than nothing... This time we'll be covering the Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars demo again, as well as a very unusual press statement from David Perry. Both are very interesting tidbits of information, but I still feel disappointed that this is all I have to report with this week...Command & Conquer 3 DemoElectronic Arts has recently announced that the C&C 3 demo will be released next week - and will feature the following content: A tutorial mission, one sk...

In fact, I've only actually played two games this week - namely the Supreme Commander demo and Unreal Tournament 2004. This means that the Game of the Week will have to be a game I've already featured before. Not that that's a bad thing, there's still plenty to tell...I've had my reasons for playing each... I wanted to try the Supreme Commander demo again because I had been given a hint that it didn't support hardware audio rendering properly which dragged the framerate down. And indeed, when I ran the game without sound (by adding " /nosound" to the shortcut icon's target line) performance increa...
