Wheke, a giant squid six metres long, was caught off the New Zealand coast in 2000. Using a new method, scientists dehydrated and then plastic-coated the animal, preserving it in a state close to what it looked like when alive. It took 65,000 euros and two-and-a-half years of work. Images and soundbites of the presentation of the squid at the Natural History Museum in Paris . France's National Museum of Natural History on Tuesday unveiled the world's first plastinated squid. It is 6,5 meter long (21,25 feet) deep-sea beast donated by New Zealand and named in honour of a creature featuring Maori legend. Plastination entails replacing animal's water, fat and other liquids with polymer that hardens, meaning that specimen can be appreciated in three dimensions in a dry solid state, rather than a jar filled with formalin or alcohol, whose glass distort the view.
