The European Space Agency has published 3D photographs of Mars which reveal the planet in a way never seen before. The 3D photographs were taken by a high resolution stereo camera on board the European Space Agency's Mars Express orbiter and beamed 43million miles to Earth. They show Hebes Chasma, an elongated, closed canyon that is part of the great Valles Marineris system (the "Grand Canyon of Mars"), almost five miles deep (8000 meters, for comparison, the Grand Canyon is only 1.6 km deep), in the Grand Canyon of the Red Planet. Inside the canyon there is a raised plateau (or "mesa") which dominates this huge depression and also is made up of layered rock formations.
