GTA IV 'leaked' intro confirmed fake
2008-04-13 09:54:00
While it was an impressive fake, a video recently surfacing on YouTube claiming to be the Grand Theft Auto IV intro provides more than enough suspicion to be confirmed bogus. From the start, a short glimpse of the spine of the box revealed dodgy, uneven work, as captured below. A thin manual also presented more doubt. After an unnecessary cut to the camera pointing at the screen, the intro itself contained an odd choice of music. Moreover, all of the pictures are from previously shown artwork, while official GTA intros contain cinematic scenes, like San Andreas. All that, coupled with the fact that the person who made and posted the video on YouTube claimed to withhold any gameplay footage so that it wouldn't "ruin the game for you," is all we need to know. Artist rendering of Xbox 360's 'Newton' controller

Providing a better idea of what the Xbox 360's "Newton " prototype controller may look like, Jacob Metcalf from 8bitjoystick has posted this artist rendering. "Lots of people took issue with the diagram that their source drew in MS Paint so I did an 'artist rendering' in my moleskin notebook of what I think the 'Newton' might look like," Metcalf wrote. U.S. Army luring new recruits with free Wii
2008-04-10 02:14:00
In Mission, Texas, a U.S. Army recruiting billboard features a stern-faced soldier with the words "Stand Strong. Stand Tall. Stand Out." In bigger text to the side, the words "Win a Wii" appear. The Nintendo Wii is the newest advertising hook in the Rio Grande Valley. According to the U.S. Army, a total of seven billboards have went up along the Texas-Mexico border last month, urging those interesting in serving their country, and winning Nintendo's hard-to-find system, to send a text message on their cell phones. A reply message then directs them to the Army Web site, where they can register to win the Wii and visit a recruiter. "It's really not 'Join the Army, get a Wii,'" Bart Keyes, chief of advertising and public affairs at the Army's San Antonio Recruiting Battalion, told The Associated Press. The advertising campaign helps judge the effectiveness of the billboards, which each display different numbers. "When you advertise, you need a hook," Keyes sa...

Man beat girl into coma with video game controller
2008-04-08 02:10:00
In York, Pennsylvania, a 2-year-old girl was in a coma Monday after her mother's boyfriend reportedly beat her with a video game controller. The girl, whose name was not released, suffered severe injuries to her head and body and was treated at Penn State Hershey Medical Center, Lt. Ron Camacho of the York Police Department told The Associated Press. After Harve L. Johnson, 26, beat the girl, she fell unconscious and Johnson attempted to revive her in a bathtub. The girl's mother, Neida E. Baez, 19, then called an ambulance. Police said both Baez and Johnson remain in York County Prison. Baez was charged with endangerment of a child, while Johnson faces charges of aggravated assault, simple assault, and other counts. Ph.D claims Left Behind steals minds, souls of kids
2008-04-07 12:19:00
Dr. Pat Holliday has released a new book attacking Left Behind Games for releasing "children under the influence of subliminal mind control and turning them into puppets." According to Dr. Holliday, the computer is one of the most mind-capturing instruments ever invented. It can be used for good, but Satan's agents are taking advantage of it for evil. "The modern child's world is being barraged with occult oriented books, rock records, pornographic magazines and images of animals and people, ungodly cartoon tapes, witchcraft satanic computer games and children's toys and Disney World and Warner fantasy movies that have become evangelistic tools for Christian children," Dr. Holliday wrote. "Their minds are jam-packed with violence, monsters, fantasies, demons, witches, wizards, robots, zombies like creatures and devils of all shapes and forms. The Bible warns, 'Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools and exchanged the glory of the immortal God fo...

Microsoft: Australian retailers 'excited' about Xbox 360
2008-04-07 10:09:00
Contrary to a ChannelNews and SmartHouse report that retail chains in Australia are the dumping the Xbox 360, Microsoft said in a statement that Australian retailers "are excited about our current and upcoming offers, and we're looking forward to another bumper year." "We are happy with where we are in the market right now. We're significantly ahead of where we planned to be this financial year, and selling well both on the software and hardware side," Mariana Cidade, PR Manager of the Entertainment & Devices Division at Microsoft Australia said. Cidade noted that since 2006, over 320,000 Xbox 360s were sold in the Australian market alone. Over 2 million units of Xbox 360 software have been sold in Australia and New Zealand, "nearly double our next-gen competitors combined." The Xbox 360 also has an "unprecedented" attach rate of 7 games per console in Australia alone, Cidade said. Read the full article

Sony: Wii Remote is a 'gimmick', no plans to create knock off
2008-04-07 03:53:00
Scott Steinberg, Vice President of Product Marketing at SCEA, made it clear in an interview that Sony isn't interested in pursuing a Wii Remote knock off. When asked about creating "some sort of motion sensing controller to create the types of games that are possible on Wii but for PS2," Steinberg responded, "I think a Wii Remote style would feel a bit less innovative on the PS2, so I don't think we have any plans to go there." "I think it's interesting to think of what different controller configurations could do for the PS3 and possibly for the PS2, but as a Wii Remote knock off, I don't think we're in the business of creating knock offs. I don't think we need too; we're over 41 million installed base," he said. Steinberg noted that households are buying the PlayStation 2 because it's a DVD player and a games console at a $129 price point, not the $250 that the Wii offers. "We've got thousands of products to choose from. Those are the tipping point f...

Australian retailers to dump Xbox 360?
2008-04-07 01:39:00
A new survey conducted by ChannelNews and SmartHouse of 10 retail chains who operate more than 2,000 stores across Australia has revealed that the Xbox 360 is "on the skids," as the retailers see growth coming mainly from the PlayStation 3 and Nintendo Wii. According to the survey, retailers claimed that the PS3 was selling well because of its Blu-ray drive, while the Wii appealed to women and children. Other retailers said the Xbox 360 has suffered as a brand since its Red Ring of Death problems last year. They also cited that compared to the PS3 and Wii, consumers did not see value in Microsoft's console. "The Xbox 360 is dead. We are stocking it because of our relationship with Microsoft however all our energy and marketing is going into the PS3 and the Nintendo Wii unless Microsoft come up with something new or additional marketing dollars," a Melbourne-based retailer said. "Halo 3 was big on the Xbox but that was about it." "They have tried discounting an...

U.S. broadband speeds sluggish as online gaming grows
2008-04-06 11:03:00
New York City citizens pay about $30 a month for a download speed of three megabits per second (Mbps) via a DSL line. Compare that to Japan, where for $5 more, broadband users get 100 megabits. "I think if you look at where the U.S. is compared to other countries, given our speed, we're not competitive with other countries," New York State's chief information officer Dr. Melodie Mayberry-Stewart told the BBC. The lack of competition with Comcast, the nation's largest cable television company and residential Internet service provider, has hindered progress. The company reportedly limits download speeds for its biggest users, as Internet video threatens the popularity of traditional television. "As we get more and more things that tie us into the internet - Xbox 360, IPTV services, all sorts of broadband gaming - we're all getting online more and more," said Jeremy Kaplan of PC Magazine. Just last week, the NPD Group released numbers that, while modest, showe...

Video game targets racist, trigger-happy cops
2008-04-03 02:32:00
Are cops more trigger-happy when aiming guns at minorities? That's the question sociologists and political scientists have studied since the 1970s, and the answer may lie in a video game. According to social psychologists at the University of Colorado and CU Stereotyping and Prejudice (CUSP) lab, a simple computer game has allowed researchers to not only measure the influence that cultural bias has on police decisions, but also make some surprising discoveries regarding how the human mind forms and acts upon racial prejudice. The shooting video game involves black and white targets holding either guns or harmless objects, such as cell phones or soda cans. Study participants are instructed to shoot at only the armed characters, forcing them to make split- second decisions. New data has revealed that players were prone to shoot images of unarmed black men and were quicker to shoot at black men holding guns than white men who were armed. The study also showed more...

Report: Microsoft to lose money for every Blu-ray Xbox 360 sold
2008-04-02 10:10:00
Following up an unconfirmed story from DigiTimes that Lite-On IT is developing built-in Blu-ray disc drives for the Xbox 360, a new report suggests that Microsoft would be selling the new version of its Xbox 360 consoles at a loss. Citing industry sources in Taiwan, the $95-100 Blu-ray drive is much higher than the $18-20 DVD drive built into current Xbox 360s. "The increase in retail price of the new consoles is unlikely to cover the whole of the OEM price gap," the sources analyzed. This means that Microsoft would be losing money for every Xbox 360 sold. Sources in the report also noted that Sony may take aim at OEM makers partnering with Microsoft for the new drives. "Sony, as a main global producer of BD-ROM pick- up heads, may decide to combat the market competition by selectively reducing the supply of key BD-ROM components." Microsoft refused to comment. Windows Mobile coming to Xbox Live
2008-04-01 06:47:00
Microsoft is seeking to expand its mobile business in collaboration with other groups, including Xbox Live. Newly appointed Windows Mobile chief Andy Lees and marketing head Todd Peters told the Seattle Post-Intelligencer in an interview that big opportunities lie in new online services for mobile devices. While Lees declined to go into any specifics, he signaled for plans on broader collaboration between Windows Mobile and other Microsoft units, such as the Xbox 360 and Xbox Live . Other units mentioned by name include Windows, Office, Windows Live, and Zune music-player groups. "We have lots of people that play games that we provide -- games on PC, games on Xbox, and there's a whole bunch of things like that, that we can provide," Lees said when pressed for more details. Both Lees and Peters agree that the overall market is poised for big growth in the coming years, as Windows Mobile expands to not only the Xbox business, but into greater collaboration with ...
Nintendo shutting down fan site for copyright infringement?
2008-03-30 01:53:00
The administrators over at FriendCodes.com are reporting that Nintendo of America has sent out an email requesting that the fan site be shut down due to copyright infringement. "Basically Nintendo is 'asking' us to remove the site files that are infringing the copyright (such as the logo, which contains the word 'friendcodes'), and to drop the domain name for the same reason," a forum post on the site read. "They've been sending the emails for almost a month now with no response, so they're very serious about it right now. We're still talking about what to do, but it looks like we will have to shut down the site temporarily, until it all gets worked out. Of course, if it works out Nintendo's way, we'll be closed down permanently. Naturally, we're going to try and keep that from happening, but like I said, it doesn't look good." We're very skeptical about this, as April Fools' Day is coming up, but judge for yourself. Nintendo was not available for c...

Tiger attack victim caught stealing Wii Remotes in his pants
2008-03-29 09:11:00
In San Leandro, California, one of the men who survived the Christmas Day tiger attack at the San Francisco Zoo was arrested on suspicion of trying to steal two video game controllers from a Target store. Paul Dhaliwal, 19, reportedly concealed two Wii Remotes in his pants. An undercover security officer witnessed the theft and followed Dhaliwal to the cash registers, where he never made an attempt to pay for the items. More security officers confronted Dhaliwal in the store's parking lot. According to a police report, the suspect was uncooperative and immediately began to resist. Dhaliwal was eventually subdued and placed under citizen's arrest. Once authorities had him in custody, Dhaliwal admitted to concealing the Wii Remotes, but claimed to have never left the store. Dhaliwal, who has a history of criminal activity, posted $1,500 bail Friday. Coincidentally, the incident at Target happened on the same day he and his brothers filed a claim against the city...

Cancer patient's PSP, medicine, homework stolen
2008-03-27 05:01:00
In Dallas, Texas, while a 7-year-old boy headed to his chemotherapy appointment Tuesday, thieves were at work on his family's car, making off with his medicine, school homework, and video games. If that wasn't enough, it all happened on the day before his birthday. Kyle Springs and his family drove from Oklahoma to Dallas for a monthly chemotherapy treatment for a tumor in his brain. The thieves struck as he and his parents ate breakfast at a Denny's restaurant. "It had my homework and my medicine in it, and I couldn't leave my medicine. I needed to take it," he said. Along with the backpack of medicine, homework, a PlayStation Portable (PSP), and video games, his medical records were stolen as well. According to Kyle's mother, video games helped him escape the pain. "They keep his attention off sitting there, getting that medication that he knows is going to make him sick," Trish Springs said. When authorities heard about Kyle's situation, they stepped ...

2008-03-27 00:45:00
Sony Computer Entertainment has confirmed that its PC PlayStation Store on the PlayStation Network (PSN) may have allowed unauthorized access to personal information. "We have found out that there has been a possibility of unauthorized access to personal information on the PlayStation Store through PCs, a content download service of the PlayStation Network," a statement issued by Sony read. "Although unlikely, it is possible that the passwords of a small percentage of PlayStation Network users may have been changed through unauthorized access, making it possible to view users' personal information and/or use the Wallet for the PlayStation Store. PlayStation Network accounts do not display entire credit card numbers." Sony said that it took immediate measures to rectify the issue and system security is now restored. "We have investigated the extent of unauthorized access and possible alteration of passwords that could have occurred before corrective measures w...

Pachter: Gibson is desperate, trying to extort money
2008-03-22 04:07:00
With Gibson Guitar Corp. suing Activision, several national retailers, Harmonix, MTV Networks, and EA over the Guitar Hero and Rock Band series of video games, Wedbush Morgan Securities analyst Michael Pachter has rang in on the issue. "This is a poorly masked attempt to extort money," Pachter said. Like many other analysts, Pachter believes that the recent litigations are merely efforts to capitalize on the video game industry, specifically Guitar Hero's success, which surpassed $1 billion dollars in 26 months. Gibson claims that both Guitar Hero and Rock Band infringe upon its 1999 patent for a "simulated musical concert experience." The company has since ordered Wal-Mart, Target, Kmart, Amazon.com, GameStop, and Toys "R" Us to stop selling the Guitar Hero series. The retailers, however, have no intention of halting the sale of the games anytime soon. Amazon.com will continue to sell Guitar Hero and Rock Band, spokeswoman Patty Smith said. "We're aware of ...

Analysts: Wii, DS growth has peaked
2008-03-22 02:05:00
Nintendo's stock took a hit Thursday, as KBC Securities Japan reduced the company's stock rating and target price. Citing concerns that the demand for the DS and Wii would slow, KBC downgraded Nintendo from "buy" to "hold" and slashed its 12-month price estimate by 30 percent to 57,500 yen ($580). According to a report obtained by Bloomberg, analyst Hiroshi Kamidi wrote that sales in the U.S. and Europe are peaking after "amazing growth" this fiscal year. "We believe that it is reasonable to expect a tougher trading environment," Kamidi wrote. KBC reduced its outlook for Nintendo's net income next fiscal year by 8 percent to 391.6 billion yen. It also slashed DS console shipments by 6 percent, and Wii software sales by 5 percent. Nintendo stock has dropped about 22 percent this year after doubling in 2006 and 2007. Read the full article

Gamers duped, Dreamcast.com not hosted by Sega
2008-03-10 03:16:00
Sega apparently wasn't the one behind asking gamers, "Do you still own a Dreamcast ?" Dreamcast.com was updated Saturday, sparking speculation from fans of a possible revival from Sega, which ended production of the console back in 2001. As it turns out, the domain name "dreamcast.com" hasn't been owned by Sega for years. The site update for registration of a user.dreamcast.com account successfully collected Dreamcast serial numbers, as well as email addresses, from gamers around the Web. The account application page on the site now reads, "Dreamcast website is temporarily unavailable. Please try back later. We apologize for any inconvenience." The website has been brought to the attention of Sega, as well as the current host of Dreamcast.com, HostDime, Inc. "We will look into this issue," HostDime Abuse and Security analyst Charlie S. told us. Sega may request that the site be taken down, he said. Sega was not available for comment. Gamer robs elderly man, finishes playing video game
2008-03-07 09:11:00
In Fort Lauderdale, Florida, one gamer wasn't persuaded enough to leave an in-store video game unfinished, going back inside to play after he and two other men beat and robbed an elderly man outside a convenience store. The 63-year-old man was caught on surveillance video walking out of a Star Food store when he was attacked. "He went inside to purchase a few items," Kathy Collins of the Fort Lauderdale Police Department told local WTVJ. "As he was walking out of the store, three subjects approached him." One suspect in a blank tank top distracted the elderly man, while another man in a white t-shirt came from behind and placed a chokehold. A struggle followed as the victim refused to surrender his wallet, causing the three assailants to throw him on the hood of his car. "One of the three suspects, after robbing the victim, turned around and went back into the convenience store to finish a video game that he was playing," Collins said. Police have arrested two...

In West Haverstraw, New York, a father and son were arraigned Tuesday morning on felony charges for assaulting another father and son with a baseball bat during an argument over the ownership of an Xbox video game. According to The Associated Press, one suffered from severe head trauma and the other with injuries to his arm and leg. They were treated at Nyack Hospital. Steve Jobs questioned on Apple's video games strategy
2008-03-05 04:30:00
Apple CEO Steve Jobs and his executive team addressed a wide range of questions from investors Tuesday. The company's annual meeting inside its headquarters in Cupertino, California, concluded with an hour-long question and answer session with shareholders, which opened up with a question to Jobs on Apple's goals in the video games market. "Gaming is bigger than Hollywood. With over $18 billion in cash, is Apple interested in, say, buying Valve to acquire Half Life in the manner that Microsoft bought up Mac game developer Bungie and turned what would have been a Mac game, Halo, into the main reason to buy the Xbox and develop games using DirectX?" the attendee from San Francisco asked. "What is Apple's strategy in games on the Mac, iPod, iPhone, and Apple TV? I ask this because games developers who appeared on stage at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) last year have made comments that suggest Apple isn't doing the things needed to support serious g...

Teen steals Xbox 360 after being praised by President Bush
2008-03-03 02:10:00
In Plymouth Township, Pennsylvania, praise by the President of the United States apparently wasn't enough to prevent a teen from stealing an Xbox 360. President Bush had personally lauded Lewis Bennett, 14, for his role in neutralizing what authorities described as a possible "Columbine- style" assault at Plymouth-Whitemarsh High School. However, he and three other ninth graders later burglarized the home of the would-be attacker in two separate incidents. Bennett was a friend of Dillon Cossey, 14, who admitted in October that he had stockpiled weapons to attack the school. Bennett reportedly confided in his parents about Cossey's plans, eventually leading to an investigation. Cossey later gained national attention after police found four homemade hand grenades, a 9mm semiautomatic carbine, and other weapons in his bedroom. In a police interview, Bennett admitted that he and one of the other boys broke through an unsecured window, taking items that included an...

Ex-NFL player almost dies, concerned about Guitar Hero skills
2008-03-02 11:07:00
For Rien Long, former defensive lineman for the NFL's Tennessee Titans, a life-threatening car crash wasn't enough to end his passion for Guitar Hero . Back in January 21 of this year, while driving his Ford Mustang at excessive speeds near downtown Nashville, Long crashed into a rock wall on a freeway on-ramp. Long almost died in the crash and nearly died again a few days later at Vanderbilt University Medical Center when his heart began to fill up with blood. Now, after being discharged from the Stallworth Rehabilitation Center, Long remains in a first- floor motel room, his temporary home, recovering from a punctured lung, eight broken ribs, a "filleted" pelvis, a severed urethra, and a fractured C-6 vertebra. The accident resulted in "six or seven" operations in total, Long said he lost count. He hasn't, however, lost count of his capabilities at playing Guitar Hero. "I was unbelievable before the accident," he said. "I was lights out. But the concussion ...

Pelican charger blamed for PSP burning
2008-02-27 03:36:00
Investigators revealed Tuesday that an after- market charging device may have played a role in a 12-year-old boy's PSP overheating and causing second-degree burns. Back in February 6 of this year, seventh grader Herald Clay's PSP overheated in his pocket, causing burns to his left thigh. The boy's mother told reporters Tuesday that representatives from Sony and Pelican Accessories are expected to arrive in Farmington Hills, Michigan, in the coming weeks to inspect the device. Lt. Denny Hughes of the Farmington Hills Fire Department said that the PSP was turned over to the Clays' attorney. While investigators have yet to identify a specific cause for the device to overheat, the Pelican charging adapter, which the Clays reportedly bought after misplacing the original one, "likely played a role." According to Pelican's website, the video gaming peripheral company manufactures an AC/DC 2 in 1 Charging Adapter for the PSP, and boasts that it's "UL approved to a...

Microsoft discontinues Xbox 360 HD DVD Player
2008-02-24 02:16:00
Microsoft officially announced Saturday that it will no longer manufacture new HD DVD players for the Xbox 360. "As a result of recent decisions made by Toshiba, Hollywood studios, and retailers, Microsoft plans to withdraw from HD DVD. Xbox will no longer manufacture new HD DVD players for the Xbox 360 , but we will continue to provide standard product and warranty support for all Xbox 360 HD DVD Player s in the market," a statement issued on the Gamerscore Blog said. "As we stated earlier, we do not believe this decision will have any material impact on the Xbox 360 platform or our position in the marketplace. HD DVD is one of the several ways we offer a high definition experience to consumers and we will continue to give consumers the choice to enjoy digital distribution of high definition movies and TV shows directly to their living room, along with playback of the DVD movies they already own."
