2008-01-24 01:47:00 In the city of Bradford in West Yorkshire, England, a religious father who tortured his children in what was described as a "campaign of pure cruelty," which included beating one of his sons for playing PlayStation too long, was today warned that he faces a substantial jail sentence. The 47-year-old father from Nigeria, whose name was not released for legal reasons, was found guilty on three counts of unlawful wounding and eight counts of cruelty for subjecting his sons to a catalog of torture. The boys' mother was also found guilty on two counts of cruelty for willfully failing to protect her sons. "You breached the position of trust that parents have to their children and you engaged in a long campaign of pure cruelty as to what has been described by your own counsel as torture to your own children," Judge Christopher Prince said. BHF wants ban on in-game ads for junk food
2008-01-20 02:12:00 The British Heart Foundation (BHF) and health campaigners are calling for a ban junk food advertisements placed in video games played by children. Suspecting that companies use in-game advertising to get around the ban on advertising during children's TV programs, they believe that even though many games have age-restriction labels, they are often played by children who are younger than their supposed target market. Health campaigners cited a huge hoarding for Sprite in NBA Street Homecourt for the Xbox 360, an opportunity to order pizza from within the role-playing game Everquest II, a banner for Coca- Cola within Football Manager, and ads for sandwich chain Subway in Counter-Strike. "There needs to be a ban on all junk-food promotion in games," Ben McKendrick, spokesman for the BHF Scotland and Northern Ireland, told Scotsman News. "We have succeeded in removing these ads from children's television, but children spend so much time playing these games that th... More About: Food , Game , Junk , Junk Food
The Times: Xbox is crack for kids, 'Satan's Sudoku'
2008-01-19 09:27:00 According to columnist Janice Turner of The Times , Xbox is crack cocaine of the brain and that it's "an impossible task to police our children's multimedia addiction." "'Screen time' is the new playground buzzword," Turner wrote. "What irony that having wasted weeks acquiring the world's last Wii, and credit card bills still bulging from new PCs and plasma TVs, we spend the rest of the year fighting to stop our children using them." Turner cited average media usage figures among children and other reports of TV watching leading to high blood pressure, obesity, attention deficit disorders, linguistic problems, and back pain. "Screen-time policing is the nexus between our fears for our children and our anxiety about the future. Technology boggles us with its unfathomable black magic: what if Microsoft used its power for evil and patented spyware that could suck our brains out through our noses? But our children with their instinctive understanding of new sys... More About: Kids , Crack , Sudoku
Man chokes puppy for chewing on his video game wires
2008-01-15 10:46:00 In Doylestown, Pennsylvania, a man who choked a puppy that was later euthanized must continue seeing a mental health therapist, and perform 100 hours of community service. According to a report from The Associated Press, police said that Jonathan Allison choked his 8- week-old Beagle because it chewed on his video game wires. Allison, who entered a guilty plea Monday to a cruelty-to-animals charge, said he loved the dog. He claimed that he was under stress because he injured his back and lost his job. He later attempted suicide, and is now taking medication. "I wish I could get it back," he told the judge. Bucks County Judge Jeffrey Finley said that Allison appears truly remorseful, but what he did was cruel. The puppy was euthanized when it had increasing trouble breathing. A veterinarian said the dog had a bruised neck and fluid-filled lungs. Read the full article More About: Video , Puppy , Game , Video Game , Chewing
Man sells broken Wii on Craigslist, hides from police in closet
2008-01-15 09:08:00 In Kitsap County, Washington, a man now faces stolen property charges after selling a broken Nintendo Wii, which was later confirmed as stolen, on Craigslist . Earlier this month, two men, whose names were not released at the time of this writing, made arrangements via Craigslist and completed the transaction with an exchange of $250 for the Wii in a Park-n-Ride parking lot. However, when the buyer returned home, the console didn't work. The seller's contact information proved to be fake, but luckily, the man's wife had written down the license plate number of the car driven by the suspect. When he contacted sheriff's deputies, serial numbers on the Wii showed that it was reported stolen back in December. According to a report obtained by the Kitsap Sun, the man who reported the theft had been friends with the suspect, but cut off the relationship after the man "got involved with drugs and started to steal items from him." When authorities gathered enough in... More About: Police , Closet , Broken

Microsoft, Yahoo! acquisition may help Xbox business
2008-01-15 01:25:00 The New York Post once again set the industry ablaze, reporting last week that Microsoft is still debating a potential acquisition of Yahoo !, a deal that some analysts believe will help the Xbox business. In May of last year, Peter Lauria and Zachary Kuowe of the Post reported that "Microsoft has intensified its pursuit of a deal with Yahoo!, asking the company to re-enter formal negotiations." With the estimated price tag of the acquisition at $50 billion, such a deal would narrow the gap in overall online ads with Google, as well as provide more content and features for Xbox Live and the Zune Marketplace. "Aside from cost savings, a deal would also create opportunities to use Yahoo! content on Microsoft devices, such as making music exclusively provided to Yahoo! Music available on Microsoft's Xbox game console and Zune music player." Rick Munarriz of The Motley Fool said that Microsoft needs to "turn a bleeder into a leader." "Right now, running its online... More About: Business , Acquisition
Police link movie, Tony Hawk video game to teen arson case
2008-01-08 01:31:00 In LaFayette, Georgia, police are now saying that the New Year's Day arson of a water-sewage building is linked to teens imitating roles portrayed in a Tony Hawk video game, as well as a movie. "The arsonists called their criminal act 'the destruction tour,'" Public Safety Director Tommy Freeman told the Walker County Messenger. According to authorities, an investigation revealed that the arson was connected to a group of teens emulating violent images in Tony Hawk's Underground 2 and the movie Fight Club. "They told us directly that these sources influenced them," Freeman said. In Tony Hawk's Underground 2, the Walker County Messenger reports that the mission is to complete what is called a "destruction tour." Characters are rewarded bonuses for destroying or stealing objects, with emphasis on the more destruction created by the player, the more points he will accumulate. Dad shoots son after refusing to look at his Xbox 360
2008-01-06 07:45:00 In Monroe County, Pennsylvania, police say that it was an argument over an Xbox 360 console that led to a son asking his father to shoot him, and he complied. The 17-year-old boy reportedly wanted his father, James Stanley Niedosik, 60, to look at his Xbox 360 Friday night. However, when the father didn't want to, an argument ensued. During the dispute, the boy handed his father a rifle and told him to shoot him, and he did. The boy suffered from a .22 caliber bullet lodged in his skull behind his ear and was treated at Lehigh Valley Hospital-Cedar Crest. Niedosik was arrested and sent to Monroe County Prison on $250,000 bail. He is now charged with aggravated assault, simple assault, reckless endangerment, and endangering the welfare of a child. 2008-01-02 01:07:00 In Pewaukee, Wisconsin, for a 20-year-old college junior majoring in Finance, winning a brand new Nissan car in an Xbox Live tournament was apparently not enough. Now, after winning the car, I'll be able to sell off my other car and have some spare cash," he said. Otto raced in his customized Sentra on Forza Motorsport 2 for an estimated 3,000 virtual miles, logging in over 100 practice hours. "They were fast, but I ended up winning by over six seconds, which is quite a gap," he said in an interview. "You have to be able to set fast times, and you also have to be consistent with your times." By spring midterms, Otto, whose Gamer tag is SPDN ComeBakDan, expects to have his brand new car, along with a... More About: Girlfriend , Wins

Best Buy stores refuse to display Wiis to avoid mob scene
2007-12-26 02:21:00 On the weekend before Christmas Day, many retailers across the country, including Best Buy, Circuit City, and Toy "R" Us, were lucky enough to receive a shipment of Nintendo Wiis to the delight of last-minute shoppers. Depending on the store, some retailers reportedly received 40 to 60 Wiis on Christmas Eve. Others received a shipment over the weekend, but in both cases, the console sold quickly and almost as soon as it became available. At a Best Buy store near Baltimore, General Manager Dave Wolf told the Baltimore Sun that they enforced a policy of not displaying any Wiis to the customers to avoid a mob scene. Instead, employees walked around the store telling people that they were available. According to another Best Buy manager, when they receive a shipment of Wiis, it's common for the store to practice this policy and not announce the availability of the Wii over the intercom for the safety of the customers and employees. Most customers, however, lost all... More About: Display , Scene , Stores , Avoid

Ignorant parents angry at GameStop over Wii rain checks
2007-12-21 04:46:00 Uninformed parents looking for Wiis this holiday season are angry at GameStop today after leaving empty-handed when trying purchase a Wii reservation certificate. Last week, Reggie Fils-Aime, Nintendo of America's president and CEO, held a telephone press conference addressing the Wii shortage. Therefore, the Associated Press and news media across the country picked up on the story and reported "December 20 and 21" as the dates to get ready for the rain checks. However, when GameStop detailed the program Tuesday, they maintained that reservations would only be given out on Friday, December 21. Soda companies apologize for blaming video games
2007-12-20 08:33:00 Yesterday, we brought you a story about the American Beverage Association (ABA) blaming video games for obese children. Well today, Kevin Keane, a senior vice president of ABA, sent over to Kotaku a lengthy apology and clarification. "Folks - The ABA statement is from me and I would appreciate you taking the time to understand the context of our statement and the point we were making about the mayor's ridiculous plan (which is getting lambasted in the national media, by the way). Bottom line is that weren't bashing video games, but saying it is just as silly to tax retailers who sell soda as it would be to tax high tech companies who make video games, computers and search engines -- all important industries in SF area. If you read our full statement, it attacks the mayor's flawed strategy and logic of singling out one food or beverage as the cause for a complex problem of childhood obesity - thus deserving of unique taxation. Our point is that it would be eq... More About: Video , Companies , Video Games , Games , Soda

Brain Age technology to help Toyota develop cars for the elderly
2007-12-19 05:14:00 Professor Ryuta Kawashima, developer of Nintendo's Brain Age video games, said that he's teaming up with Toyota to develop intelligent cars that will help seniors drive safely. "We envision future cars will be able to monitor brain and emotional activity to back up elderly drivers," he told the Associated Press Tuesday. Kawashima is reportedly discussing the development of an intelligent system that can determine driving patterns and curb any dangerous activity. For example, the system could slow the car down if it senses the driver pushing on the gas pedal for no reason. Other developments include a car navigation or temperature control system that can help the driver stay alert. "Ultimately, we hope to develop cars that stimulate brain activity, so that driving itself becomes a form of brain training," Kawashima said. Pro-marijuana reform responds to Dad selling son's Guitar Hero III
2007-12-19 04:31:00 On the heels of an eBay auction gaining worldwide attention for a Dad selling his son's Guitar Hero III Christmas present for $9,100 after he caught him smoking marijuana, another Guitar Hero III auction has popped up. However, this one's in favor marijuana and condemns the Dad for taking such actions. The listing, which calls the son's punishment "absurd," cites and will donate 50 percent of the auction's profits to the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws (NORML). "Marijuana is the third most popular recreational drug in America (behind only alcohol and tobacco), and has been used by nearly 80 million Americans. According to government surveys, some 20 million Americans have smoked marijuana in the past year, and more than 11 million do so regularly despite harsh laws against its use. Our public policies should reflect this reality, not deny it," according to NORML. "That auction got so much coverage all over the internet for an absolute... More About: Selling
Soda companies blame video games for obese children
2007-12-18 11:07:00 As mayor of San Francisco Gavin Newsom proposed charging big stores a fee when they sell sugar- sweet soda, the American Beverage Association (ABA) has decided to go out and point the finger at video games for the city's obesity problem. According to The San Francisco Chronicle, Newsom's proposal would put an as yet-to-be- defined surcharge on all drinks with high- fructose corn syrup, which puts the sweet pop in most nondiet sodas and many other food products. The syrup also puts on the pounds, something city officials say strains the health care system, reported the International Tribune Herald. However, the soft drink companies called the plan a "flawed strategy." "It makes no sense to single out any one single cause of obesity, which is a complex problem," said Kevin Keane, a senior vice president of ABA. The ABA, which represents the U.S. beverage industry of producers and bottlers of soft drinks, bottled water, and other nonalcoholic beverages, said video g... Police, ESA raid illegal video game stores in Singapore
2007-12-18 06:59:00 In conjunction with police in Singapore , the Entertainment Software Association (ESA) raided local stores selling illegal video games. The gadgets confiscated reportedly allowed gamers to download and play pirated games on the Nintendo DS. The ESA is now warning that more raids on stores or housing estates will take place in the future if the sellers do not stop their illegal activities. "Over 200 devices, imported from Hong Kong and worth about $8,500 (U.S. $5,800) were confiscated by police in the raids. The gadgets themselves bypassed the game console copyright protection mechanisms by fooling the system into thinking it was an original game cartridge," said Gladys Mirandah of Internet Business Law Services. "They could either store the pirated games or read the bootleg games stored in removable micro-SD (Secure Digital) cards." Under the Singapore Copyright Act, those caught using the illegal devices could face up to two years in jail and be fined up to $20,... More About: Video , Police , Game , Video Game
