Kid gets suspended from school for Halo sketches
2007-11-04 02:21:00 In Pittston, Pennsylvania, a 14-year-old boy was suspended from school and authorities are considering terrorism threat charges for notebook sketches of Halo . The student attended Wyoming Valley West Middle School where officials found the boy's composition notebook in his locker with "crudely drawn" sketches of an assault rifle, a bomb, and a map. He was immediately suspended and the school called the police. Search warrants were issued and authorities searched the boy's home as well as the home of his father nearby. According to the Associated Press, the teen's computer was seized for investigation into whether he was making terroristic threats. The boy's mother says the sketches were merely harmless scribblings of a teen obsessed with Halo. The school, however, has a different story, claiming that the teen threatened a classmate, saying "I'm thinking of murdering you." School officials also claim the boy said he "sits on his roof and shoots pigeons with... More About: Sketches , Etch
Men get 20 years for robbing gas station with NES Zapper
2007-10-31 01:06:00 In Covington, Kentucky, two men were sentenced to 10 years in prison Monday for robbing a gas station with a "toy gun," which has now been confirmed to be a Nintendo Entertainment System Zapper. Back in May, Arthur Swain, 18, entered an Ameristop Food Mart around closing time and approached the counter. He then displayed a gun, the NES Zapper, to the clerk and made off with only about $100 in cash from the register, reported The Enquirer. According to Assistant Kenton Commonwealth's Attorney Leanne Isler, Swain's accomplice, Jeremy Goins, 20, acted as the lookout during the robbery. Both Swain and Goins pleaded guilty to second degree robbery and received maximum sentences from Kenton Circuit Judge Greg Bartlett. "Victims and police did not know the gun was a toy until after it was all over," Isler said during the sentencing hearing Monday. "The defendants could have easily gotten themselves or innocent bystanders shot." Unfortunately, a photo of the Zapper ... More About: Station , Years , Bing

Frost, 37, told police that he and his acquaintances were "getting high" and playing video games inside his house. Family forces retarded man to blame murder on video game
2007-10-26 02:09:00 In Akron, Ohio, a man was sentenced to life in prison for the beating death of an 18-month-old child after his family reportedly manipulated his retarded brother to take the blame because of a tampered video game. According to police, Archie Wooden, 20, originally stated that he beat the toddler. However, his story changed dramatically, eventually blaming the death on Jarel Wooden, his mentally retarded brother. At trial, Jarel testified that the toddler was tampering with a video game that he was playing. He said that he became angry and began shoving the 18-month-old to the ground several times. However, social workers said Jarel gave them conflicting reports and they believed that his family was manipulating him to save his older brother. On the heels of the prosecution's argument that Wooden killed the child out of rage at the baby's mother, a jury last week acquitted Wooden of aggravated murder, which could have carried a death sentence. However, Common... More About: Video , Murder , Family , Game , Video Game

Nintendo helps bust huge counterfeit ring
2007-10-23 01:37:00 A raid ordered by the Hong Kong High Court yielded 10,000 products allegedly used to play pirated Nintendo software, the company said. During a three-day period, Nintendo representatives seized thousands of game copying devices and modification chips from the Supreme Factory Ltd. facilities. The search also uncovered documents reflecting the scope of the operation. The Factory allegedly has ties to a French company, Divineo SARL, and its principal, Max Louarn, who are also named in the legal action initiated by Nintendo, the company said. The High Court prohibited the companies from further distribution of the devices and from disposing a portion of their assets worldwide and ordered such assets frozen pending outcome of the legal proceedings. "Piracy affects the entire video game industry," Jodi Daugherty, of Nintendo of America, said in a statement. "It can destroy years of hard work by a team of very talented software developers, who strive to create games ... More About: Ring , Bust , Huge
Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction gets early release
2007-10-19 09:05:00 Ratchet & Clank Future : Tools of Destruction went gold two weeks ago and is officially scheduled to come out October 30. However, some stores have unexpectedly received the game early. Now, Sony will allow retailers to go ahead and release the game next week. "Well, due to some unexpected quickness at the factory, a vast majority of retailers have already received the game. With that, some retailers are choosing to release the game next week instead of waiting until the 30th, which we are all too happy to allow," said Greg Phillips, Line Producer at SCEA. It was only two weeks ago that Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction went gold and it was announced that the title had been delayed by a week. "The extra wait will be worth it," said Phillips. "Insomniac has been hard at work squeezing every last detail, dance move and tool of destruction that we could fit onto a Blu-Ray disc." Apparently, the game didn't need to be delayed after all. Wii price to stay at $249 for 'foreseeable future'
2007-10-15 09:29:00 George Harrison, head of marketing for Nintendo's U.S. operations, says that there will be no price drop for the Wii anytime soon. As Nintendo struggles to meet the high demand for the console, Harrison is trying to convince Nintendo headquarters to allocate enough supply for the U.S. market. With that, supply shortages are expected through the holidays. "We are somewhat in a selling mode to get our fair share, or more than our fair share," Harrison told Reuters in an interview. "We're still working on it. Decisions for November/December are just being made now. It's 10 days on the water to get from China, and the holidays start a little earlier in the U.S. with Thanksgiving." "We'll stay at $249 for the foreseeable future. We are still selling everything we can make," Harrison said. "We think we're in a great position. Both our competitors took price reductions and it hasn't stalled our momentum at all." "Most importantly, we're going after an expanded ... More About: Future , Price , Stay
EA deal with Pandemic and Bioware should pay off
2007-10-15 02:40:00 In a recent interview, Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter said he believes the deal with Electronic Arts buying Pandemic and Bioware should pay off, although there is some risk. "It's a lot of money, which places more pressure on them to deliver revenues at the level that they have modelled - USD 300 million-plus per year," Pachter said. "If Pandemic and Bioware continue to be as productive in the future as they have been in the past, revenues should easily hit the required level." "However, much of their past revenue came from games like Neverwinter Nights, Baldur's Gate, and the Star Wars games. The first two franchises are somewhat tired and are PC-centered, while the last one will likely not be licensed by EA going forward." "It's possible that either Neverwinter Nights or Baldur's Gate can be turned into MMOs, and both would likely do quite well, but neither Pandemic nor Bioware has had success in that area in the past - few have." Nonetheless, Pa... More About: Deal

Forza 2 to cause frustration for holiday Xbox 360 buyers?
2007-10-13 04:31:00 With the announcement from Microsoft this week on packing in two free games to those who purchase an Xbox 360 this holiday season, many gamers may experience firsthand the unresolved problems of one of the titles. Along with Marvel Ultimate Alliance, Microsoft Game Studios' acclaimed racer Forza Motorsport 2 will be bundled into every Xbox 360 console and Xbox 360 Elite by the end of October. That's where the problem may lie for many who will take advantage of this holiday season's bundles. At the official Forzamotorsport.net Forums, over 350 gamers have complained about Xbox 360s freezing or dying after playing Forza 2 . The game's developer, Turn 10 Studios, insists that "faulty Xbox 360s are more vulnerable" to Forza 2. That, however, was months ago. Gamers continue to plead with Turn 10 to address the freezing issue, but it seems that they are being given the cold-shoulder. This is where the decision to include Forza Motorsport 2 in the holiday bundles co... More About: Holiday , Frustration
Store trainee steals PS3, loses his '15,000-a-year job'
2007-10-11 07:12:00 A trainee manager at a GAME store in Leamington Spa, England was given a conditional discharge for 12 months and ordered to pay 100 after pleading guilty to the theft of a PlayStation 3 from his work. Since it's company policy to search employees before they leave, David Poulton, 27, placed a PS3 outside the back door of the store and went to pick it up later, according to The Courier. To cover up the theft, Poulton falsified a shop record, claiming that he had bought the PS3 three days earlier. However, the very next day, a stock check was carried out, revealing the missing PS3. Other GAME employees reported seeing Poulton with the console. After checking surveillance camera video, police went to his home where the PS3 was found still in its box. Poulton's attorney stated that as a result of the theft, the trainee has lost his 15,000-a-year job, and will have difficulty finding another job. Boy jumps off building after parents ban video games
2007-10-08 14:23:00 Last week, we reported about a 15-year-old boy who committed suicide by jumping off a 50-story- building in Tokyo, Japan. That death was reportedly over an earlier fight the boy had with his brother over a disagreement with a video game. Now, news comes of a story with a tragic and similar conclusion. In Moscow, a 10-year-old boy jumped off the 19th floor of his apartment building to his death Friday. According to a police report, the parents of Andrei Smirnov were angry at him for bad conduct in school and poor grades. A Russian tabloid reports that the boy's teacher had written remarks about his bad conduct in the school diary. He tried to erase them to escape the wrath of his parents. Angered by the teacher's remarks and their son's attempt to deceive them, Andrei's parents then banned him from playing video games on his computer. BBFC rejects revised version of Manhunt 2
2007-10-08 13:02:00 The BBFC has rejected a revised version of the video game Manhunt 2. This follows the rejection of the original version of the game in June. The distributor had set in motion an appeal to the Video Appeals Committee against that decision, and this was suspended while the revised version was considered for classification. David Cooke, Director of the BBFC said: "We recognize that the distributor has made changes to the game, but we do not consider that these go far enough to address our concerns about the original version. The impact of the revisions on the bleakness and callousness of tone, or the essential nature of the gameplay, is clearly insufficient. There has been a reduction in the visual detail in some of the 'execution kills', but in others they retain their original visceral and casually sadistic nature" "We did make suggestions for further changes to the game, but the distributor has chosen not to make them, and as a result we have rejected the game... Bungie not admitting Halo 3 sniper rifle glitch?
2007-10-08 11:58:00 In the latest weekly update on Halo 3, Bungie told gamers to "sack up" regarding a problem with sniper rifle hits not registering. Bungie stated, "What you're seeing is roughly the same situation as you would have in Halo 2, but with movies and screenshots available to examine this stuff, you're seeing more alleged injustice on a frame by frame basis. The sniper is harder to use now, so sack up, it requires more skill." Whether that's true or not, many users at the Bungie.net community aren't too happy with Bungie's response, calling it insulting. "This is what we got in response to asking why the hit detection is glitchy in the sniper rifle. Are we really being told, in the face of irrefutable evidence that the sniper is glitchy, that we should just deal with it because it's now "harder to use?" So, is there really a glitch with Halo 3 's sniper rifle? It depends on who you ask. While many gamers report with the problem and demand that Bungie acknowledge... More About: Glitch , Rifle
List of problems in Halo 3 that Bungie should fix
2007-10-08 04:34:00 Over at the official Halo 3 forum on Bungie .net, user sniper712 has posted some of the problems in Halo 3 that need to be addressed. "I really want to get all bugs in Halo 3 fixed and allow Bungie to know all about them, but I'll need everyone's help," he says. His list of problems follows, but feel free to add yours in the thread. 1. Sniper shots need to be registered better. Too many headshots pass through a head and do 0 damage. 2. Error of "Could not connect to the Halo 3 server" occurs very often in Matchmaking. 3. Big Team Battle needs to have 16 players instead of only 12. 4. Players should not lose EXP if they are lagged out, standbyed, or are booted from a matchmaking game. 5. Commando shoulders have a bug and are not awarded and Security shoulders occasionally do the same. 6. Many game disks are scratched and need to be checked and fixed. 7. Many armor permutations are way too hard to get for most players and require achievement boosting, while ... More About: List , Problems
