Konami on broken MGS4 street date: 'Things happen'
2008-06-08 04:09:00 The release of Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots ahead of June 12 has prompted Konami to speak out about the game's broken street date. "Unfortunately, these things happen. As much as we like see that no one breaks streets dates, no one can monitor every single moment that a title gets packed up for shipment and when its on its way to the stores," Konami's Dani wrote. "The store could be at fault as well, for letting someone get a copy before the street date." That appears to be the case with Wal-Mart, as the mega-retailer has sold MGS4 's 80GB PS3 bundle early on at least two separate occasions, here and here. Pete Stone, Konami's U.K. General Manager, pledged Thursday that the game wouldn't sneak into the hands of gamers early. "We pride ourselves on working closely with retailers and have a continuation of the signed agreement system we used so successfully before," said Stone. "All major retailers are supplying written agreements that they will ho... More About: Street , Things , Broken

Call of Duty 4 sales hit 10 million
2008-06-04 01:58:00 Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare has just hit 10 million units sold, Infinity Ward said Tuesday. Speaking with CNET's Daniel Terdiman, Infinity Ward studio head Vince Zampella stated he didn't know exactly how many units the game had sold on each platform it is available on, the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC. However, he mentioned that the title had been most successful on the 360. Zampella acknowledged that Call of Duty 4 has set the bar very high for his studio, and it's hard to imagine Infinity Ward being able to come right back with another 10 million-seller. The game is still selling, its map pack add-on has sold 1.5 million copies, and the main game itself is expected to sell a lot more copies this holiday season, he said. Lack of TV ads, PS3s to 'hold back' MGS4
2008-06-03 03:00:00 With Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots due out next week, the PlayStation 3's install base and lack of TV marketing for the game may hinder sales, according to Newsweek's N'Gai Croal. "There aren't as many PlayStation 3s in the marketplace as there are Xbox 360s. That's clearly something that's going to hold it back, but I think it will sell PlayStation 3s," N'Gai Croal, General Editor at Newsweek, said. "I'm hearing some reports that the marketing for the game, that there may not in fact be TV marketing for it in the United States. If that's true, that's definitely going to hold it back..." According to Croal, Metal Gear Solid 4's mechanics makes it a better game than Assassin's Creed, but pointed out that MGS4 may fall behind in marketing. "Assassin's Creed was marketed phenomenally well," Croal said. "It had great TV spots. So they're not doing TV spots for this game, that's something that will hold it back." Boy pulls knife on teacher, demands cash for GTA
2008-05-30 06:01:00 In Framingham, Massachusetts, a 13-year-old middle school student faces several charges after threatening his teacher with a knife in an effort to reportedly raise money to buy Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. The incident occurred on Tuesday morning when the student approached the teacher at the end of class with an 11-inch knife. "Do you have $20? I need the money," he told the teacher. The teacher refused and tried to reason with the teen, who then lowered his demand to $1. The incident ended when the teacher was able to get close enough to the student to snatch the knife from his hands and no one was injured. "It appears he wanted to buy a game called Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas," Framingham Police spokesman Lt. Paul Shastany told The MetroWest Daily News. The teen spent two to three weeks planning his attack before carrying it out after his mother refused to buy the video game, according to The Associated Press. The teen was charged with assault and batte... More About: Demands , Teacher , Cash , Knife
Microsoft: Fight against Sony has strengthened us
2008-05-30 03:55:00 With Microsoft continuing its attempt to strike a deal with Yahoo!, the company's top software executive said Wednesday that competition, including its fight with Sony in the video game industry, has strengthened the software giant. Xbox Live was born out of the fight against Sony in the video game console business, Ray Ozzie, Microsoft's chief software architect, said at a Bernstein investor conference. "Microsoft... by necessity had to build up a culture of crisis," Ozzie said. "Ever since the early, early days, Microsoft has always faced some amazing competitor that looked like it was going to be some roadblock to success." Ozzie also pointed out that the company began making software compatible with rivals to take on open-source products. When asked about Google, he told Bernstein Research analyst Charles Di Bona that the Web search leader's financial strength and savvy made it a formidable, but not unfamiliar, rival. Konami clarifies MGS4 Limited Edition PS3 bundle
2008-05-30 03:55:00 Following the threads at Konami .com, Konami said it saw some confusion regarding the Metal Gear Solid 4 Limited Edition PlayStation 3 bundle and "just got approval to clear some stuff up" with the following message. "First, there seems to be some speculation as to how limited this limited edition MGS4 /PS3 bundle is. I can't divulge exact stock numbers, but I can verify that quantities are in the four digits, which means less than 10k (its actually a bit less than that, even). Once that's gone, its gone. Seriously, we don't have any more than that. Second, some seem to think that the Gun Metal Gray is just a 'paint job', which it is not. It is a different material, which has more of a 'matte' finish and feel as opposed to the standard 'glossy' one. Also, the bundle comes with a DualShock3 controller which also is Gun Metal Gray like the console, as opposed to the standard controller, and is of course limited like the bundle is. The bundle does indeed co... More About: Bundle
Nintendo responds to Wii Fit's heavy gamers
2008-05-30 01:00:00 Nintendo has issued a response addressing heavy Wii Fit gamers who exceed the Wii Balance Board's 330 pound weight limit. The company offered a few simple suggestions on what to do if you cannot play the game due to your weight, but stopped short of proposing that gamers go on a diet to drop below the limit. "The maximum weight for both game and accessory is 330 lbs (150 kg), which is stated on the Wii Fit packaging," Nintendo of America's Jill Callahan said. "If this is a product that can not currently be used in your home, you may wish to investigate a possible return of the product to the retailer where you purchased it." "Or perhaps you would like to give it as a gift to someone you know who would enjoy it. I hope you find these suggestions helpful." Read the full article More About: Nintendo , Heavy , Gamers
Ubisoft: IGN's Haze review 'pretty rude'
2008-05-22 00:55:00 After Haze received a dismal rating of 4.5/10 from IGN, Ubisoft 's Haze Community Developer argues that IGN has been "pretty rude" with the PlayStation 3 exclusive. "I think they've been pretty rude with the game. During journalists hands-on we were really happy as anyone had fun with the game. Most of them stated that the gameplay was solid and multiplayer well balanced," Wuzzi told GameRush Entertainment. "Anyway, we have no comments regarding reviews. But as a gamer I would say that the most important are the user reviews. We'll see how the game is rated by gamers." Yesterday, Wuzzi urged gamers to judge the game for themselves instead of relying on reviews. "One thing I can already tell about the reviews is that most of the time they are the opinion of only one person and may not reflect the way you will see the game: you have to make your own judgment," he wrote. "My opinion is always to give the game a try to see whether I like it or not." Read the ful... More About: Review , Pretty , Rude
Haze Community Dev: Reviews are 'opinion of only one person'
2008-05-21 01:44:00 After Rob Yescombe of Free Radical stated "MEGAowch" in response to IGN's 4.5/10 review of Haze , the Community Developer at ubi.com is again urging gamers to judge the game for themselves. "One thing I can already tell about the reviews is that most of the time they are the opinion of only one person and may not reflect the way you will see the game: you have to make your own judgment," Wuzzi wrote. Early reviews of Haze looked promising, when Famitsu scored the title 34/40 and PlayStation Magazine of Italy a 9/10. However, things turned around this morning with IGN's poor rating, criticizing the game's "horrible plot, weak gameplay mechanics, and visuals that are truly underwhelming," followed by GameSpot's 6/10. "When I refer to the review of Famitsu, it is only due to the fact that this is one of the most anticipated reviews. But my opinion is always to give the game a try to see whether I like it or not." Report: Customer service, RRoD, pirates kill Xbox 360 in India
2008-05-20 08:27:00 Microsoft is now winding up operations in several cities in India , as trouble seems to be brewing over the performance of its Xbox 360 console, according to a report from CNBC-TV18. The report, which cited anonymous sources, concludes that Microsoft has withdrawn from several Tier-I cities due to lackluster sales. Its Entertainment and Devices Division has also reportedly withdrawn the marketing budget for the current fiscal. The Xbox 360 , which launched in India in September of 2006, has been facing dismal sales already due to sloppy customer support, high hardware failure, and pirated games, the report said. Games are easily available in the grey market for Rs 100, while official titles cost upwards of Rs 2,500. Microsoft has already repeatedly refused to share its India sales numbers. "The Microsoft Entertainment Devices Division is very much on track with its targeted business plans," a Microsoft India spokesperson told CNBC. This comes as Microsoft's gami... News anchor's son cussed out on Xbox Live
2008-05-16 06:33:00 Like many other young gamers around the world, the son of news anchor John Carlin of NBC affiliate WSLS 10 in Roanoke, Virginia, plays Halo 3 on Xbox Live . Concerned about what Tyler is exposed to on Live, Carlin placed a microphone in his son's headset during Halo 3, capturing the following conversation. "Holy S*** Suck A**. He's Terrible. If you're that bad, you should quit." "Yeah! I'm F****** dead b/c their sniper sniped me -teammate says "no its b/c you F***** Suck." ""F*** You Joe, he was a Captain grade 3." In another conversation, Carlin said he heard a voice of "clearly a young child" among the players participating in sending out foul language, including racial slurs and homophobic comments. When asked what the reaction was when there's a kid in the game, Tyler said, "A lot of people cuss them out..." "Just a lot of times they'll say-Oh you're gay. You're being gay stop doing that." Confirmed: 13-year-old gamer, hookers story bogus
2008-05-16 01:26:00 A money.co.uk story claiming that a 13-year-old boy was arrested after stealing his father's credit card and going on a $30,000 spending spree, culminating in playing Halo with two hookers in a Texas motel, has been confirmed as bogus. "Police said they were alerted to the motel by a concerned delivery clerk, whom after delivering supplies of Dr. Pepper, Fritos and Oreos had been asked by the kids where they could score some chicks and were willing to pay. They explained they had just made a big score at a World of Warcraft tournament and wanted to get some relaxation," the article read. "It is a hoax. No arrest has been made. There is no boy by that name (Ralph Hardy) enrolled in the school system," Chris Cromer of Newark told GameRush Entertainment. The story continued, "The $1,000 a night girls sensing something up played Halo on the Xbox with the kids, instead of selling their sexual services." Report: Blame GTA IV for more in-game ads
2008-05-14 08:32:00 Take-Two last week proclaimed Grand Theft Auto IV as the "largest launch in the history of interactive entertainment," as the title sold 6 million units globally in its first week, raking in approximately $500 million. Now, a new report from The Economic Times suggests that the scale of GTA IV's sales may push more brands into tapping in on in-game advertising. GTA IV's Mature rating and violent themes may not make it an advertiser's dream. While the game does not offer in-game advertising opportunities, displaying only fictitious brands, its success shows that there is great potential. "The success of GTA IV is the clearest sign yet that video games are going mainstream," Paul Jackson, principal analyst at Forrester told the paper. "They are now capable of challenging the box-office takings of Hollywood blockbusters." Previous studies have shown that in-game ads can be effective, including in increasing brand familiarity, purchase consideration, and ad reca... More About: Report , Game , Blame
Nintendo: Wii shortage is no hype ploy
2008-05-14 02:40:00 With the North American release of Wii Fit expected to spark a boom in demand for the Wii next week, Nintendo has maintained that the shortage of its console is not a result of the company artificially manipulating the flow of product into the market. "The fact is that we have put far more product on store shelves worldwide than our competitors. The difference is that in a very short time we have far outpaced their total sales," said Dervin Camden of Nintendo of America. According to Camden, it's easy for some consumers to arrive at the conclusion that the Wii shortage is intentional when "competitors' systems fill the shelves" and Nintendo's console remains scarce. "The Wii console has effectively expanded the video game market by re-defining what it means to be a gamer. Millions of people who never before picked up a controller or who had sworn off gaming years ago are trying the Wii and becoming fans," Camden said. "There is no benefit to Nintendo in not ... Men beat, sodomize teens over stolen PlayStation
2008-05-10 10:22:00 In Baltimore, Maryland, police have arrested one person and are looking for three others suspected of kidnapping two teens, holding them captive for three hours, and assaulting them in an attempt to extract information about a stolen PlayStation. Christopher Johnson, 21, is being held without bail and faces 31 charges, including multiple counts of first-degree assault, kidnapping, sodomy, false imprisonment, and using a dangerous weapon. Detectives believe the 16-year-olds were abducted at around 1:00pm last Friday from a bus stop. Four men, with their faces covered and at least two with handguns, reportedly forced the teens into a black four-door car. They were then driven around for a while and then taken to a house. "They were beaten, cut and burned, and the suspects kept asking about a PlayStation game, which the victims said they knew nothing about," police spokesman Troy Harris told The Baltimore Sun. The men later released the victims on a street, where ... More About: Teens , Playstation , Stolen , Beat
Fake anti-GTA IV story going around
2008-05-04 10:13:00 Crime-related incidents have plagued Grand Theft Auto IV ever since it launched at midnight last week, with BBC News reporting a mugging and stabbing, which GamesRadar disputes. Now, a new story circulating the Internet claims that a 10-year-old boy in Tallahassee, Florida, committed a slew of crimes "just minutes" after playing GTA IV. We can confirm that the entire story, which was cited as coming out of The Associated Press, is bogus. No word yet on where the article, written below, was originally published, but just watch out for this one roaming around the Web. "A local ten year old boy by the name of Elijah Carden was arrested yesterday after he committed several crimes over a four hour period. According to police reports, the child left his house around 10:30 a.m. and proceeded to break the window of a neighbors car. After a failed attempt at "hot wiring" the vehicle, the boy went back into his house and retrieved his fathers .22 cal automatic pistol. The... More About: Story , Fake , Anti

2008-05-02 10:22:00 Grand Theft Auto IV made an appearance on Late Night with Conan O'Brien Thursday, revealing a more friendly side of the game. "In the past, Grand Theft Auto's been severely criticized for being too violent," O'Brien said during the monologue. UPS employees fired for stealing copies of GTA IV
2008-04-28 19:48:00 Now just hours away from the release of Grand Theft Auto IV, news comes today that at least three UPS employees were fired after getting caught stealing the game from shipment boxes. "We have security in place at the facilities, and we make sure they understand to keep an eye out for things to exit the building," a UPS worker told Ars Technica. "We had tips from people inside, and some of them were discovered at intermediate hubs... it's easy to spot: flaps torn, some boxes are re-taped." With more interviews scheduled for today that will likely end in termination, all of the thefts seemed to be only for personal use and committed just days before the game officially goes on sale. "As long as the people loading the packages are doing their jobs, it's easy to track down," the source warned. Another UPS employee even openly admitted on the Xbox.com forums that after seeing hundreds of GTA IV boxes, he felt "tempted to open one box, take a copy, and put $65 insid... GTA IV for PC coming November 30?
2008-04-28 10:12:00 With the launch of Grand Theft Auto IV upon us, many Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 owners are more than ready to get started on the title, but will PC gamers have something to look forward to this November ? According to German video games retailer citydisc.ch, a PC version of GTA IV will be released on November 30 of this year. Back in January, the same rumor began circulating that Rockstar would release a PC version, but in October. That rumor cited retail plans. Previous titles of the Grand Theft Auto series have taken between six to eight months to arrive on the PC after debuting on console, which makes a November release plausible. Grand Theft Auto IV heads onto both the Xbox 360 and PS3 Tuesday. Rockstar Games has yet to confirm if the game will ever see the light of day on PC. Read the full article
Analyst: GTA IV 'is going to be the game of the year'
2008-04-27 09:42:00 As gamers around the world gear up for the release of Grand Theft Auto IV, which hits store shelves Tuesday, the highly anticipated title is not only expected to race into record books as the fastest-selling video game ever, but be awarded distinctions along the way. "This is going to be the game of the year," said Edward Woo, video game industry analyst at Wedbush Morgan Securities. According to Woo, GTA IV's appeal is fueled by its captivating storyline and open-world format. "Instead of just watching a movie and being fed the story you can go another way and the movie goes in that direction," Woo told AFP. "That is what people want; more interactive entertainment rather than watching a TV show." While controversy surrounds the title, as critics remain concerned that games like GTA IV breed criminals, U.S. statistics show that violent crimes by children have been on the decline for years. "If there is this big causal trend you would expect to see a large lea... More About: Game , The Game , Analyst , Year

Take-Two shutting down leaked GTA IV videos
2008-04-25 11:37:00 Rockstar's parent company is going after leaked gameplay videos of Grand Theft Auto IV. Hosting service FileFront.com has already begun closing the accounts of users who upload their own GTA IV footage. "Take-Two has set forth rules for how their content may be displayed and distributed; as copyright holders they have a legal right to do this," Charlie Barr of Hosted Content Management at FileFront explained to one user. "Feel free to take this up with them, but as it says on our upload page we remove any content that is uploaded without creator permission. Until you demonstrate that you have written permission to upload this content your account will remain closed." When the user contested that he was a video games retailer and simply showing gameplay footage of his own, Barr responded. "Take-Two Interactive contacted us directly and notified us that any person with a legitimate copy of GTA IV must also agree not to display any content from the game before it... Microsoft: No Xbox 360 price cut with GTA IV
2008-04-24 09:47:00 Despite Microsoft reporting last week that the Xbox 360's European sales more than doubled after its price cut last month, the software giant maintained that U.S. gamers should not expect a similar move anytime soon. With highly anticipated Grand Theft Auto IV hitting store shelves next week, Chief Executive Steve Ballmer said Wednesday that there are no plans to alter Xbox prices in the U.S. "We're pretty comfortable right now with Xbox pricing," Ballmer said at a news conference. Last week, Microsoft reported that the Xbox 360 was the number one next-gen console in EMEA, owning 42 percent of the market in terms of life- to-date revenue. It also reported that the 360 had the highest software attach rate of any game console in Europe, with more than 7 games sold per console after 27 months on the market. According to European console sales monitor Chart Track, the PlayStation 3 has still largely kept ahead of the Xbox 360, with the Nintendo Wii reportedly ahead... More About: Price
Jack Thompson sends letter to Take-Two chairman's mom
2008-04-23 09:38:00 Jack Thompson is at it again. Just days before the release of Grand Theft Auto IV, the attorney sent the following letter to the mother of Take- Two executive chairman Strauss Zelnick. Dear Mrs. Zelnick: Your son, as you may know (or maybe you don't know), is Chairman of Take-Two Interactive Software, Inc., whose most popular video games are the Grand Theft Auto murder simulator games banned in some countries but sold to children here. Your son last week was reported to have said the following about Grand Theft Auto IV, due to be released Tuesday, April 29: "We've already received numerous [GTA IV] reviews, and to a one, they are perfect scores. My mom couldn't write better reviews..." Taking your son's thought, I would encourage you either to play this game or have an adroit video gamer play it for you. Some of the latter gamers are on death row, so try to find one out in the civilian population who hasn't killed someone yet. What you will see in your son... More About: Letter , Jack Thompson , Jack

Xbox 360 almost burns down house
2008-04-18 10:56:00 In Little Rock, Arkansas, investigators believe that a residential fire Monday afternoon was caused by an Xbox 360 console. While no one was at the home, the house nearly burned down as flames charred the interior. "My Xbox 360 has the rings of death, which means something gone wrong you have to send it back for repair. Generally it's over heating inside," gamer Carl Olson told Today's THV. According to investigators, the source of the fire was traced to the power cord of an Xbox 360. "It was melted and it looked like they had it against the wall in on edge and things like that need a little space to dissipate heat," Little Rock Fire Department Captain Jason Weaver said. Back in 2005, Microsoft began providing replacement power cords to Xbox 360s, citing fire concerns. "It seems really unlikely. I've been gaming for years and I haven't seen anything like that," Olson said. The Fire Marshal estimates more than $100,000 worth of property damage to the house. ... More About: House , Burns
Marketing: GTA IV vs. Halo 3
2008-04-17 09:32:00 With Grand Theft Auto IV's release date of April 29 fast approaching, Rockstar hasn't held back on heavily marketing its highly anticipated title. Eye-catching ads, billboards, and more are popping up in major cities across the United States and overseas. Some analysts are already predicting that GTA IV will sell $400 million in its opening week. That would beat out the current record of $300 million, which Halo 3 captured last year after a saturation of advertising and promotions leading up to its launch. So, how does the marketing strategy of the current record holder match up with what may be taking its place? Some of the very first public looks at both Halo 3 and GTA IV came in the form of trailers. Microsoft unveiled the first Halo 3 trailer at E3 2006 and another one at the same event the following year. Rockstar took the approach of revealing four trailers on its official website, the first of which almost immediately overloaded the developer's servers.... More About: Marketing
