Jungle Hunt recording
2007-10-15 23:13:00
When I first saw this game many years ago, it may have been the Japanese version, which is called Jungle King, and stars more of a Tarzan-type player. This was changed for most other versions, which star, as shown here, a jungle-adventuring type star with an explorer's hat. Taito probably wanted to avoid any possible problems with the estate of Edgar Rice Burroughs. It's a fun game where you

Portable Playstation review
2007-10-14 20:00:00
The AP's tech reviewer Matt Slagle looks at the Playstation Portable : Maybe Sony Corp. should start watching one of television's many home makeover shows. When those groups redo a house, there's rarely anything left of the original by the show's heartwarming conclusion. Sony seems to have taken the easy way out with its latest PlayStation Portable. Its revision adds a few nifty features but

Marble Madness multimedia
2007-10-12 14:41:00
Marble Madness is a fun game virtually relishing in isometric graphics, with plenty of complications awaiting as, using a trackball, you guide a marble through many complicated twists, turns and shifting sections in order to reach the goal plate. It may also be the first game designed by a 17-year old, as Mark Cerny was when he first joined Atari during the mid-1980s. An interesting thing about

Area 88 and US Navy recordings
2007-10-09 17:11:00
Before I present the following, let me note that the names I've given here are for the Japanese versions of these games. The names for the overseas versions are UN Squadron and Carrier Airwing. The former game has a most unfortunate title, since it's got nothing to do with the real life United Nations, one of the most corrupt outfits on the globe that was responsible for the oil-for-food scandal

Frogger film
2007-10-08 15:47:00
This was probably by far the very game that put Konami on the map when they were getting underway in becoming a video game developer years ago. The idea is to fill in all five spaces at the top of the screen with our froggy little friend Frogger there, and doing your best to avoid getting run over or falling into the river and drowning. Unlike real frogs, who can swim, Frogger apparently either

Popeye's arcade game

Nintendo made this neat little game back in 1982, where the object is to collect all of Olive Oyl's hearts that she throws down from the field at the top where she's located, all the while trying to avoid Bluto's attacks. And, when the time is right, you can try to obtain some spinach cans with which to gain a power-up with which to knock Bluto into the lake! There's about four areas in here

Dungeons & Dragons Tower of Doom taping
2007-10-03 13:20:00
Remember the famous TSR role-playing game, Dungeons and Drago ns , that got a lot of board game publications during the late 1980s? Well, it all led to even an arcade adventure video game after awhile, beginning with the one recorded here in three parts: Of all the games Capcom made as followups to the approach they used in Final Fight, this has got to be the coolest. In fact, note how the

Can cheating in online games be prevented?
2007-10-01 20:06:00
That's what's being asked now: Some players give themselves the ability to magically see and shoot through walls. Others find a way to fly, making them nearly impossible to defeat. Cheating like this in video games has a long and even respected tradition. Games have often slyly included ways - intentionally or not - for sophisticated players to hack into the software and then skip levels or take

Time Pilot tapings
2007-09-22 19:32:00
A time-travelling plane game, where you travel through five eras and fight evil within their periods. Also try to rescue other time pilots stuck within those times who're parachuting for extra points. It looks like you also have to gun down a boss craft in order to head for the next stage. Interesting. There was also a sequel made two years afterwards: Not bad! This time, the time periods

Made in 1981, this was fun game where a mother pig needs to defend her clan against invading wolves and rescue those who were taken hostage. It's got two types of stages: one, where you need to shoot down the interlopers with arrows as they're coming down from the cliff before they land, and then where you need to shoot them down before they sail to the top. Europe gets lucky again
2007-08-20 18:54:00
As Microsoft lowers the price of the Xbox for sales there:PARIS (AFP) - Microsoft said on Monday it is cutting the price of its Xbox 360 consoles in Europe as the software giant battles with Sony and Nintendo for devotees in the multi-billion-dollar video game market.Microsoft, which trimmed 50 dollars from the price of Xbox 360 models in the United States on August 7, said the video game console will cost 279.99 euros (377 dollars) or 349.99 euros, in Europe from Friday, a reduction of 20 or 50 euros, according to the version.Microsoft's new-generation video game console had the advantage of being released a year before Sony's PlayStation 3, and Nintendo's Wii debuted in November last year. However, the Xbox 360 reputation was tarnished by a design defect that Microsoft says it has fixed.Meanwhile, Wii systems with their group-oriented games and motion-sensing controllers have proven so popular they sell as quickly as they are made.Sony recently cut PS3 prices in North America an...

Gyruss, where you rotate in circular motion
2007-08-18 22:19:00
Imagine Galaxian with an 8-way joystick and where you fire "into" the screen. This is what you'd get.Gyruss is a rarity in video games due to how it's surely the only game I know of to date where you rotate around the edges of the screen while firing at all the enemy spaceships coming at you as you make your way back to earth, travelling through a few special warp zones in space. The first stage has two warps and the rest have three to go through as you make your way to earth. As you reach each planet, a bonus stage can be reached. Quite a fantastic space game indeed.

Three rock bottom games
2007-08-17 14:30:00
This review article from the AP features three games that the critic doesn't like:No one sets out to make a bad video game, right? Even the worst games start off with fairly lofty expectations, only to be undermined by lack of money, lack of time or lack of talent.Still, some games are so atrocious that you can't help thinking their awfulness was deliberate. Take the Nintendo DS version of "Deal or No Deal," a hideous tie-in that doesn't even deliver the basic mechanics of the simplistic TV show that spawned it. And it costs $30! The only way it could be more of a rip-off would be if the publisher tricked you into buying an empty box. Then again, any savvy gamer probably has the common sense to avoid "Deal or No Deal." More often, bad games come in deceptive packages. And typically, a bad game has the germ of a good idea, even if it's obscured by incompetent design and programming. The games reviewed here all sounded promising when they were announced, but something went terribly ...

We get Lucky and Wild with this game!
2007-08-15 22:34:00
This is one of the best games I've known where you both drive and shoot with a gun! One or two players can play here as two buddy cops who're trying to bring down a drug racket syndicate in Los Angeles, delivering plenty of hilarious dialogue and banter while they're chasing down those crooks on wheels and aircrafts! And if you score a really big one, the chicks at Pink Cat's Garage'll give you plenty of hugs and kisses plus better repairs for your car! A really funny game that's great to play.

Here comes the latest John Madden football game
2007-08-14 06:48:00
EA's just got a new edition at the ready:IRVING, Texas (AP) - Say Madden this time of year and most everyone knows the reference is not about the Hall of Fame coach and sportscaster himself. It's about his video game.In an industry seemingly fixated on aliens, dragons and crime sagas, John Madden's football series rushes its way annually to the top of the sales charts, selling some 60 million copies in the past 17 years. The newest version, "Madden NFL 08," debuts Tuesday for 10 different gaming systems with the sort of spectacle usually reserved for blockbuster movie premiers and "Harry Potter" books. The hype for this year includes "Maddenoliday" festivities in New York's Times Square on Monday evening, where former players such as Eric Dickerson, Warren Moon and Marshall Faulk will meet with fans. Former New York Giants running back Tiki Barber will hand off the first copies of the game to rabid fans Monday night at midnight at Toys "R" Us.For hardcore devotees like Steve Willi...

Galaxian, Galaga, Gaplus
2007-08-11 21:14:00
Here, in this post, I present recordings of at least three classic games that expanded on what Space Invaders began. First, here's Gala xia n:As you can see, the challenge is to gun down all those aliens who're dive bombing at you and to be careful thus that they won't crash into and destroy your ship. Things get pretty tough when there's fewer left and more to dodge.Next, here's Galaga :This game introduced the aliens with tractor beams that could capture the player's ships, and the challenge here if you have the chance is to gun down the alien with another turn and regain the ship to put alongside the current one for double - even triple - firepower. Since some of the aliens can do a double swoop, that makes shooting them down pretty tricky if there's just two left. And then, here's Gaplus:In this entry, you can move anywhere on the screen within the lower fourth/fifth of it (I wonder if it used a trackball like Centipede did?), and this time, depending on if you shoot the cor...
