xkcd at Google - What xkcd REALLY stands for
2007-12-13 23:54:00
Randall Munroe, the creator of my favorite web comic xkcd, gives a talk as part of the Authors@Google event last week. The video is about an hour long but quite insightful (warning: a lot of xkcd jokes you won’t guess unless you read the comic). It is funny how a lot of the ...

2007-12-11 04:42:00
If you’re like me and most other modern day office works, you’ll find yourself checking your e-mail many times a day. Personally, I am rarely away from a computer so in fact, I have my Gmail window open at all times. Because of this fact, I have been using Gmail to keep track of my ...

Compared to their $20 per month Grid -Server (gs) plan, this may seem like a great deal until you look carefully ...

Review: ThermalTake iXoft Fanless Cooling Pad
2007-11-28 06:09:00
Many laptop owners can attest to their notebooks generating enough heat to warm a small room — especially those overheating Macbook(Pros). There are many cooling pads on the market that either utilize fans to actively cool the laptop or by raising the laptop up to increase ventilation (or both). ThermalTake’s iXoft Fanless Cooling Pad takes ...

What Causes Daily RSS Fluctuations?
2007-11-25 06:46:00
I got asked this question in an e-mail after my previous post about why I suffered a drastic decrease in RSS readers only to recover a few days later. If you keep a close eye on your RSS count, you’ll notice that it goes up and down every single day. You may also notice that ...

A FeedBurner RSS Count Experiment
2007-11-23 06:39:00
I was very busy last week and was unable to post for almost 7 days. However, this was a good opportunity to take a little look into the inner-workings of Feedburner . My last post before my little one week time off from blogging was on Tuesday, November 13. Without making any posts, my RSS ...

A Hosting Package for Everyone
2007-11-21 16:02:00
I’ve discussed many web hosting companies in the past and most important thing to keep in mind is that there isn’t a single hosting company that works well for everyone. Not everyone can afford mediatemple’s high quality web hosting, and a pay-as-you-go hosting package is not the best choice for people expecting a lot ...

Optimizing Affiliate Links with Affiliate Link Tracker
2007-11-20 21:44:00
Many bloggers know that there are advantages to masking affiliate links through a redirect, some of them include the following: Prevent Commission Theft - Having users change the referral id to their own or to a friend’s, taking away your income. Alleviates some user apprehension - It has been shown that some users are less likely to click on a link if they know it is an affiliate link. Maintenance and control - If an affiliate changes their URL structure, you don’t have to go through every single one of your links and change it. Instead, you change just the one link that is pointed to by the redirect. Setting Up a Redirect There are many ways to setup redirects. In the past, I have used a simple .php file with one line of code: <?php header(”Location: http://www.affiliatelink.com/?refer=jonle e”); ?%gt; I then point any affiliate links to that php file and it automatically gets redirected. For many people, they might find this implementation lacking wh...

Pagerank Algorithm Revealed?
2007-11-14 03:39:00
I attended a talk at the local University discussing job opportunities at Google in the field of statistics. There were surprisingly many positions available that required at least a masters in statistics, some of which I might try to apply for! Anyway, the speaker gave an overview of how Google’s advertising model worked and how advanced statistical analysis plays a key role in determining how to order both search and ad results. Also, he spent a good 10 minutes discussing the PageRank algorithm and how it worked. On one of his slides, there was a short little formula defining the PageRank of a particular page. I thought I had struck a gold mine and quickly scribbled it down, thinking I had discovered the holy grail of the Internet — Google’s PageRank algorithm. Of course, I was being naive and I quickly realized this obviously isn’t the actual algorithm. In fact, this was nothing more than what can be found on the Wikipedia entry. What is interesting ...

Defensio out of Private Beta!
2007-11-10 05:21:00
The spam protection program I’ve been raving about so much is now out of private beta — anyone can now sign-up! How Defensio is different from Akismet For many people, Akismet works very well — it doesn’t ever let a single spam comment through. However the problem is with false-positives. That is, legitimate comments that get flagged as spam. Although many spam management programs let the user go through and find falsely classified comments, none of them make the task as easy (or as fun) as Defensio. When you view your quarantine (caught spam comments), all comments are sorted by a spaminess rating so it makes it easy to find the few false positives amongst thousands of spam comments. When moderating these comments, they are automatically truncated to the first line so you can see more of them at once. Finally, once a false positive is found, it uses a bit of AJAX to recover the comment complete with fade effect. New Features With the release of the publ...

7 Tips to Make Reading RSS Not Feel like a Chore
2007-11-06 05:00:00
Ever check your RSS reader and see hundreds or thousands of unread articles? I know I have, and when I see that number I cringe because I feel like I have so much catching up to do.?? Reading your RSS feeds should not feel like a chore — it should be something fun that you enjoy doing.?? Afterall, these are feeds that you have chosen to subscribe to yourself! If you are feeling overwhelmed, here are 7 tips to make reading RSS not feel like a chore! Check Often This one is obvious, but by checking your RSS feeds at least 3 or 4 times a day, there is a lot less to read each time. Use a Full Featured Dedicated RSS Reader Don’t just put RSS feeds on your Pageflakes or iGoogle homepage. Aside from the fact that can you see only a few feeds, many times when you open your browser you will immediately navigate to another page. Instead, use a full featured RSS reader. TNX, An Alternative to Text Link Ads
2007-11-04 04:04:00
In light of the recent PageRank update that appears to punish sites that buy and sell text links, I suspect many people may be moving away from Text Link Ads. Personally, I have had little success with Text Link Ads due to several reasons but I think the biggest one is lack of marketplace exposure. I spent half an hour trying to find my own blog in the marketplace but could not (without searching for my name directly). How are potential advertisers supposed to find my site in the marketplace if I can’t find it myself?! A New Player in Town A few weeks ago, TNX.net had asked that I do a review of their web site so I saw it as a good opportunity to try out a new text link network. They take a very different approach than other text link sellers in that they offer a point system as payment instead of a straight cash transactions. Although this doesn’t sound as profitable, it actually offers several advantages. Reinvestment With a point service, it is easy to reinvest th...

The month of October had it’s ups and downs, here are the goals I set and the results I got. Goals from Last Mont h Reclaim Alexa ranking of 50,000. Instead of reclaiming 50,000 I have dropped to 60,000. How disappointing is that! Looks like I need to be more aggressive in promoting and spreading my content. Increase RSS readership above 350 I have been averaging about 380 RSS subscribers this month, well over my goal! Increase Technorati ranking into the top 1,750 My Technorati ranking has dropped this month to 2,879. Maintain a post a day I knew this wouldn’t be an easy task and indeed I had written only 26 posts in the last 30 days. Hold yet another giveaway contest I did manage to hold a giveaway contest a couple days ago in the form of a little game. The winner, Joyce Badu, won a 125×125 button ad spot on this blog for a full 3 months (a $150 value)! Goals for Next Month Pull Alexa ranking over 55,000. Increase RSS readership above 400 Increase Technorati ...

The first person to find all four gets a free 125×125 ad spot for 3 months! Remember, 4 different types of escapes… that’s the only hint you’re going to get! First comment listing all 4 wins! Let the games begin! Update: Congratulations to Joyce Badu. Answer to contest: Escape in it’s regular usage in the post. Eat Sleep Code (ESC) The backslashes “escaping” the spaces in the blog title Esc key as favicon on the site Bonus answer… the background color of the site is set to #1B1B1B. 1B is the hex representation of the ASCII value of Esc. How-to: Delete Undeletable Files
2007-10-30 04:38:00
This bugged me for a few weeks before I found a solution. I was creating a file through FireFTP but Firefox crashed in the middle and the file was “half-created”. It exists on the Windows desktop as an empty file but it did not seem to fully exist on the hard drive. It just sits there on my desktop titled “i dont have 8gb free” teasing me because it knows I can’t get rid of it. When I tried to delete it I got an error message: Cannot delete file. Cannot read from the source file or disk. So I know the file isn’t in use by any processes — the computer actually can’t find the file I’m referring to! Here are things I tried and failed: Deleting through command line. Changing file permissions. Renaming the file (same error as above). Overwriting the file from different programs. Rebooting in safe mode and deleting from there. Booting into a Linux Live CD, loading up the NTFS drive reader to access the file. Clearing processes tha...

Find Pagerank for Internal Pages of your Site
2007-10-29 05:31:00
Knowing the Google PageRanks of internal pages can be very important. Advertisers want to know what kind of PR backlinks they’ll be getting from you and it can also give you a quick overview as to what your most popular pages are. Save Your Time Instead of going through all 5,000 indexed pages of my site and noting the PageRank on each one, I found an online tool (via Addicted to Sports) called LivePR. The site itself is nothing special, it is poorly designed and full of ads but the Internal Pages PR checker works like a charm. It took a while to run (my blog has almost 5,000 indexed pages) but in the end, I found that I had the following: 21 PR5 39 PR4 146 PR3 190 PR2 67 PR1 385 PR0 Most surprisingly to me were the number of PR5 links. I’m not sure if it is a hard and fast rule that internal pages can never be greater than the PR of the domain’s main page but I think twenty-one PR5 pages will be pretty tempting to advertisers. This means that each site-wide ...
