How to create symbolic links without shell access..
2007-01-04 08:40:01 Yesterday, one of my friends called me up late in the afternoon complaining her web host wouldn't let her add symbolic links. She runs a little recipe site and is hosted in a shared hosting environment. Oviously, the host cannot provide shell access to the shared accounts. All she wanted to do was to run this command: ln -s /home/username/public_html/ /home/username/public_html/subdomain. Apparently, her nasty web host told her this is impossible to do in a shared hosting environment! I knew that wasn't true and any linux newbie could execute that command in a second! read more More About: How To , Links , With , Link , Shell

What is RDF
2006-12-31 20:37:01 Resource Description Framework (RDF) is a group of World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) specifications to support the exchange of knowledge on the Web. RDF was originally created in 1999 as a standard on top of XML for encoding metadata, - that is, data to describe data! Today it has grown out of that small scope to become a general method of modeling knowledge, through a variety of syntax formats. It is no longer a method of describing the author/date/subject information about a web page - it discusses how these data relate to each other. read more More About: What , Hat
Extending XML
2006-12-31 20:37:01 XML is an internationally accepted standard for describing any kind of information, to be understood equally well by a computer as by a human. Ever since its release by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) in 1998, XML has been the starting point of several new technologies. This article discusses the most significant offshoots of XML. read more More About: Tend , Ending
XML Applications
2006-12-31 20:37:01 XML has the potential to change the way we deal with web-based content. Here are four of XML's most important applications: Better search engines Because XML describes data, it can significantly improve the indexing techniques used by most popular search engines, thereby resulting in faster, more efficient searches and more relevant results. Today, given the search term "rock," search engines can't distinguish between rock, a mass of stone, and rock, the musical genre. Tomorrow, document authors will be able to use XML to ensure that the distinction between the two is clear. read more More About: Applications , Cat , Application
Checking browser compatibility for Ajax
2006-12-31 20:37:01 You designed a cool Ajax application and made sure the engine behind Ajax's server handshake is set up well. What next? Browser compatibility is a very important consideration in Ajax-based web development. This is because Ajax applications are tough on most non-compatible browsers, and your visitors from the old world will not be pleased with the way your screen renders when using Ajax. read more More About: Comp , Check , King
The Ajax model of web development
2006-12-31 20:37:01 Jesse James Garrett of Adaptive Path would never have imagined the name "Ajax " would catch on when christening an existing technology, or rather a group of technologies. Ajax, now the popular term for Asynchronous JavaScript and XML, is one of the most important combinations of technologies for web developers to know these days. With its rich grouping of technologies, Ajax developers can create interactive web applications with XML-based web services, using JavaScript in the browser to process the web server response. How to live out of the target="_blank" tag
2006-12-31 20:37:01 Did you know that the XHTL 1.0 Strict web standards frowns upon the target attribute for opening links in new windows? The reason for this is best known to the standard-setters. But how do mortals such as you and me manage to make external links open in new windows and still manage to comply with XHTL 1.0 Strict? This was a problem that came up when I was helping in IdeasForNet's design. Sandra (our impossible CEO!) wanted the pages to comply with the standard, but still make sure the external links open in new windows. The solution would have been easy if CSS3 was supported by all browsers. CSS3 has a new target-new property, which allows links to open in new window by the use of the value: window.open. read more More About: How To , Live , Target , Blank , Live O
Finding Web 2.0
2006-12-31 20:37:01 Another good article exploring the evolution of Web 2 .0: Find ing Web 2.0 by ZDNet's Dion Hinchcliffe -- First, a parable: At the heart of the Web from the very beginning was the concept of sharing information with others. Originally this vision encompassed the notion of information stored in "pages" accessible from the network and connected together by links. These links let readers effortlessly travel to related information somewhere else on the Internet, forming a sort of fabric. This conceptual fabric was of a relatively flat "Web" of servers and pages with hyperlinks gluing everything together. And though creating pages could be done by anybody, in practice it was done by a relative few. But early on, everyone liked what they saw and built on top of it. read more

Make it easier to find you with Microformats
2006-12-31 20:37:01 What are microformats? If you need a simple answer, an example of a microformat is "hCard" which is nothing but your businesscard structured in a way users and machines can read and interpret. And if you want to see an example, look at the footer of this page where a name, url, position, and organization are printed in a normal looking manner. However, these have been encoded with structured html tags in a way hcard readers can read and store easily. read more More About: With , Find , Make , Micro , Form
