Evolution is a natural thing?unless you?re Microsoft
2008-01-24 20:53:00
Many people have already commented on Microsoft 's announcement regarding backwards compatibility in Internet Explorer 8 (IE8), some with far more legitimacy than me to provide their opinions (A List Apart for one). But I have an opinion so here goes: to me it all boils down to evolution.

A small distraction that allows you to quite literally destroy a website piece by piece! Introducing Netdisaster, enabling you to " - Destroy the web!". Brilliant waste of time

Attack of the scrapers
2008-01-20 21:12:00
Apparently even lowly websites such as mine can be attacked by scrapers! For those not in the know, scrapers are low-born scum whose websites serve only to prey on other people's RSS feeds, publish that content and then pass it off as their own.

Styling individual elements versus collectively
2008-01-19 20:27:00
A debate over at Web Designer Forum prompted me to help out a newbie web designer with some advice. He was confused as to the correct usage of a div and span and then associating a class or an id.

Jakob Nielsen in Fall Out Boy?

Is it me or does the guy from Fall Out Boy (left) look very much like the erstwhile usability expert Jakob Nielsen (right)? Images courtesy of YouTube and Master New Media.

Wallpapers for web geeks
2008-01-15 21:24:00
Cool is a very subjective word. I think I'm pretty cool, but others may disagree. However somethings I know are cool. Things like the Happy Webbies wallpapers. These are caracatures of the gerat and the good in the world of the web. The web geek's equivalent of normal people's Heat magazine celebrities. Better yet, there's a whole section just for the 'brits. Not sure what it says about us 'brits when two of the four have swear word in them :)

The wierd world of Microsoft
2008-01-10 13:42:00
Maybe it's just me, but a children's book by Microsoft aimed at explaining the in's and out's of Windows Home Server sounds slightly absurd. Like I'm going to go out and buy some hardware because my 5-year old says so! Thanks to UX Magazine for the link.

Funky computer keyboards
2008-01-09 13:50:00
I love it when people take current thinking and re-think it to address other problems. I also look cool gadgets...I'm geeky like that. Enter Art Lebedev Studio with the Optimus Tactus concept and the Optimus Maximus (sound like Transformers to me).

I want to work there!
2008-01-08 21:07:00
Carsonified employees get an iPhone as their corporate IT geekery, along with a MacBook 23". Wish I could work there! Nice approach to staff morale Ryan, keep them in with the latest kit and hopefully keep them happy (along with a great working environment, etc, etc). Now I wonder if I can convince my boss to get me one...

BBC News Styleguide
2008-01-06 13:09:00
It’s amazing what a quick Google search will turn up, in this case the BBC News Styleguide. What I was actually looking for was the original use of the analog clock now housed on the BBC Homepage Beta (see top right hand side of screen), which I still can’t find!

Bucking the trend
2008-01-03 22:27:00
Well, rather than start out 2008 with a "Here's what I plan to do this year" like everyone else on the planet, I'm going to try and win an iPhone! Upstart Blogger is running a competition and I want to win it. This is a trend I've seen before and one that seems to work, so I'm all for it. Happy New Year :)

Great open source resources
2007-12-17 12:00:00
Rather than spend my time hunting around the 'net looking for the next big thing in the open source front, I let other people do it for me, basically because I'm lazy. However when the resource that does this is as good as WebAppers, I need not feel any guilt. Regular updates of quality applications, icons, images and suchlike means your open source appetite will always be sated. Also the website is really well designed. Even better they do competitions - the latest to mark an important milestone, so check it out.

Accessibility? Because It?s Our Job!
2007-12-14 17:47:00
I’ve been pondering a topic for sometime: why do clients need accessibility? My personal view is that as a professional I am here to give my clients the best possible service and with that comes adopting the right approaches to website building.

My town - Tewkesbury
2007-12-12 11:49:00
Tipping the wink to Mr Cherim and Mr Pickard, here's an insight into my real-world home town: Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire. Just to confuse the issue slightly for a moment Tewkesbury is my home town, although my proper home town, i.e.: place of birth, is in fact Huddersfield, West Yorkshire.

An example of a great home page?
2007-12-07 10:41:00
...Yell. Visually very simple, yet clever. It starts with what everyone needs: Search. The design then leads you subtly to input options and ultimately the search button.

Email standards website launched
2007-12-01 14:24:00
I've covered this previously but at last the Email Standards website has launched. It is the place to find out what email system support what standards and how to design emails to work in most, if not all, email applications. Essentially the project's aim is to work with email application developers and email designers to improve email standards and general accessibility.

New look and feel for blog
2007-11-17 10:01:00
Not a complete re-design, but a re-alignment and new template for my blog. This new theme I’ve called Blue Beast, which is adapted from the marvelous Beast-Blog v.2.0 theme by Mike Cherim. So why change? Well first off the old template was quite slow to load stuff. This new one is a lot quicker. Secondly, the old template wasn’t really up to scratch for web standards and accessibility. This one offers me much more flexibility and comes with some built in wizardry.

Competition entry
2007-11-09 21:42:00
There’s a competition running over at Web Designer Forum which I thought I’d enter. Problem is it closed on Monday 5th November, but I found out about it on the 3rd …so cue some hardcore and very fast coding. Well here’s my entry if your interested. Thought I’d post it here for posterity. Check it out. I didn’t win incidentally, but it was good to give the brain an excersie.

Building a website isn’t enough…
2007-11-01 21:42:00
…you’ve got to keep you content fresh and orderly. The content you write from day one isn’t going to hit the mark forever. Also you’re no doubt going to run special offers, promotions, attend roadshows, etc all of which will mean new or reviewed content. So you need to review and maintain it on an ongoing basis. (more…)
