Design contest?the debate rages on
2008-06-05 12:40:00
I’ve posted on the subject of design competitions before, which failed to reach a suitable conclusion for me, however I did stop entering them shortly afterwards. But a recent article over at Sitepoint titled Design Contest s Made Me A Better Designer has rekindled my interest somewhat. Basically the article is with Richard Scott, a designer who ...

Help Firefox get into the Guiness book of records
2008-06-02 17:20:00
I think Firefox is the best website browser ever and I’m not alone. Firefox is now so popular they are able to attempt an entry into the Guinness Book of Records for the most downloads of a piece of software in 24 hours. This is pretty good stuff for a free, open source bit ...

Giant fickin?s laser
2008-05-28 18:25:00
Boeing raygunship fires first blasts in ground testing. Basically a giant frickin’ laser built into a military grade aircraft to shoot missiles down and generally wreck havoc with enemy forces. I particularly like the comment saying it’s: a ray-cannon for everyday tasks! What everyday tasks could you use a ray-gun for? Cleaning you teeth? ...

Weather and photo mashup
2008-05-21 22:23:00
Really neat idea by Chris Coyier and Richard Felix, that crashes together a weather API (Yahoo’s I think) with Flickr, to give you a weather check for your location and a nice photo! Try your location. Link via That Standards Guy.

Addicted to cubes
2008-05-16 13:59:00
The Man in Blue experiments yet again, by this time with cubes! Cubescape is a strangely addictive isometric pixel picture game/toy/art tool/application. I say strangely addictive, because you feel compelled to complete yet another image with cube-perfect positioning. I can see this becoming a problem. Anyway this is an excellent piece of work that ...

Accessible search engine
2008-05-14 21:26:00
Stumbled across an interesting concept the other day called net-guide, which is basically an accessible search engine that in turn lists and promotes accessible websites in its results. The idea is good, but I’m not sure it’s implemented right. For example doing a search on sponge project, returns this site at the top result as ...

The Spam Pledge
2008-05-12 13:13:00
As JackP rightly states: If everyone followed this pledge, there would be no financial benefit to anyone sending spam and so we?d get an awful lot less…And just as importantly, buying anything from any of the spammers continues to fund their spamming activities So I’m going to second this call to arms for the Sophos’ pledge ...

The secret to keeping customers up-to-date is via RSS
2008-05-04 19:10:00
1st of May was RSS day which was about promoting understanding of RSS and the benefits it can bring to website managers and their consumers. What is RSS? For those who don’t know what RSS is, here’s the definition from the site: RSS (Really Simple Syndication) is a format used to deliver information from websites and pages ...

Economic slow down??then invest in your website
2008-04-29 11:09:00
This should apply to all companies, but is particularly relevant for financial advisers, when a recession looms invest in your website beforehand. Turbulent market conditions make investors nervous and want to withdraw to a safer place, however the right thing to do in many cases is to leave well alone. As consumer confidence drops they’ll ...

It’s time to unveil the latest creation from Sponge Project : NJP Hosting . The brief for the site, run by Nathan a guy I know from over at Web Designer Forum, was simple: dark colours scheme for a new website hosting service, but at no costs must I use images of servers or computers. Hmmm. Cue ...

1,000 years of Gloucestershire
2008-04-11 13:22:00
I’m slightly late coming to the party, given that it started in April last year, but better late than never! Basically the county of Gloucestershire is 1,000 years old and local government agencies, charities and other groups are organising a range of events to mark the anniversary. Events include, amongst other things, arts, dance, faith, ...

Success for a financial adviser website is clarity
2008-04-02 10:54:00
Clarity of voice and clarity of purpose. In other words, know what you want to say and say it in a way that is easy to understand. Clients will thank you and probably give you more business and/or referrals. Even your compliance officer will thanks you for making their life easier to review the content! All too often however, the tools and services used to power many financial adviser websites don’t allow you to do this. How can you offer clients a suitable online presence if you’re not happy with your own site? If it’s a pain to update, you can pretty much guarantee your clients will think it’s a pain to read and use. I’m proposing a revolution. Cast aside the old, archaic and down-right unusable systems in place and embrace new and easy-to-use systems instead. You’ll thank me in the long run. For example I use Wordpress as my platform of choice. Why, because: it’s easy to setup free flexible and extensible free regularly updated and imp...

Banish bad web design books from your library
2008-03-30 16:54:00
This is a frankly genius idea. So simple, yet so effective. Basically the Street Team over at Web Standards Project, ask you to print out a load of bookmarks. You then visit your local library and place the bookmarks inside any books deemed as breaking common crimes against the web, such as using table layout (shock!) ...

Apologies if you are viewing this site and can’t find stuff, can’t see images or are getting 404’s all over the place. I’m going through a re-design of the main site and blog, so please bear with me. Normal service should be resumed in the next couple of days, with a new design.
