What is The Long Tail and how does it work?
2007-12-07 00:00:00 The Long Tail was first coined by Chris Anderson in an October 2004 Wired magazine article. It was used to to describe a certain type of online business and economic models -- such as those found at Amazon.com. The term is now widely used throughout the internet, often using different names such as heavy tails, power-law tails, or Pareto tails. The Long Tail and internet keywords Search Engine Optimizers (also known as SEO's) regularly use The Long Tail when it comes to selecting the keywords and search phrases they want to target. This allows optimizers to target keywords that are considered less competitive. By doing so they are able to rise to the top of the search listings easier and attract more targeted traffic from search engines such as Google, Yahoo and Ninemsn. How does this work in the real world? Easy Skips is a client of Adamant Solutions - we designed their website and then targeted the appropriate keywords at no additional cost (It is worth noting that man... More About: Work , Long tail

Writing Copy for your website
2007-12-06 00:00:00 The main thing to remember when writing copy for your website is; keep reminding yourself of who you are writing for. Firstly you are writing for your web visitors (or human audience) who you will hopefully convert into customers. Secondly you are writing for the search engines to ensure good positions in the listings. For your human visitors the main things to bear in mind are: Focus on the benefit to the reader - Be sure to tailor the copy to the reader's interests or the benefits to their business. How can your product or service make a difference to them? Nobody wants to read endless drivel about when your company was founded, what you eat for breakfast etc etc. Keep the first paragraph of any body of text simple and to the point - readers can get the information that they want quickly and then make the choice to read on for more detailed information if they want to. Don't confuse your objective with long words or over wordy sentences. Check your spelling and gramma... More About: Website , Writing , Copy
Tips for Overcoming Bloggers Block
2007-12-05 00:00:00 Every now and then all bloggers experience what is known as "bloggers block". When it comes creeping in, it can be a terrifying affliction; the pressure of making that next post as original and interesting as the last, grows. As the blogger tosses and turns at night, unable to sleep he feels his once eager readers slipping from his grasp- OK, maybe it's not that bad but every now and then we all struggle for inspiration so I thought I would (humbly) write a few top tips to help design bloggers or in fact any blogger keep the creativity flowing. 1. Obviously there is always inspiration out there in your fellow bloggers' work. Reading other blogs regularly will often spark a good idea for your own blog. You can add a new perspective to their point or spot a tangent that they haven't mentioned. It is good to be inspired by someone else's work; you can credit them, quote them and link to them to show your appreciation. (Of course it isn't good to just blatantly stea... Onkaparinga Mayors Christmas Event
2007-12-05 00:00:00 On Friday we attended the Onkaparinga Mayors Christmas Event , held in the Christies Beach surf club. The night was excellent, from the catoring to the photographer. Seeing so many local businesses in the same room was truly an eye opening experience. Residents and business owners are passionate about the southern suburbs of Adelaide, which is good to see. Many people were discussing how much the Onkaparinga council has expanded over the years, while others were foreseeing even more growth. This was definitely the tone of the evening and was enforced by a very powerful speech by the Mayor of Onkaparinga. Read the entire story - View comments - Post a comment More About: Christmas Eve

10 things businesses should know before building a website
2007-12-05 00:00:00 A couple of months ago Andy Budd asked his readers about 3 Things You Wish Clients Knew About the Web. The comments contain many good examples of how people misunderstand the Web. It's perfectly understandable that people who do not work in the Web business don't understand everything about the Web. But the same way you need to do research before you buy a house, a car, or a dishwasher you need to make sure you know at least some basic facts before you start paying someone to build a website. If you don't, chances are you won't be getting what you need. Many of the clients Andy's readers have would benefit from reading Esther Schindler's article Becoming Clueful: What You Should Know Before You Redo Your Web Site. The article brings up seven really good tips for organisations about to start a new website project, whether they are building a completely new website or redesigning their current one. The tips are excellent, and all web professionals are likely... More About: Building , Website , Businesses , Sine

The Future of Business is Online
2007-12-05 00:00:00 Last night I attended an informative key note event by Ed Dale from "World Internet Authority", a successful online entrepeneur. The event was introduced by the Minister for Small Business , The Honourable Karlene Maywald. Ed started the event off by introducing himself and describing, in great detail, how he stumbled into online business before making his first million. His first business was a website design firm which was subsequently sold for $3 million. He then went on to build a new business focusing on the publication and distribution of niche "how-to" books online. He then sold the business for another $5 million. After being in business for many years Ed realised that small business has many advantages in the online world. He believes small business can take advantage of more opportunities online than big business and corporations. Business is all about relationships. With this in mind Ed discussed the importance of websites as a communication tool, not just a stock stand... More About: Future , The Future , Online , Sine

What is Web 2.0?
2007-12-04 00:00:00 Believe it or not, this is one of the most common questions that I am asked. Many sites around the web are now claiming to be “Web 2.0”, you may have even bumped into the phrase during your internet travels. Although it has become a widely used word, you would be excused for not knowing what it means. It is said that we are in the second phase of the Internet. The websites and online applications are becoming much more interactive and social. This new phase has been given a Version 2.0 title. That's how we get the term “Web 2.0” The Internet has reached the next phase in its lifecycle. We once had static websites with little to no interaction. Now, with the advent of new technologies, the Internet is a living organism. Websites are constantly changing and being upgraded at every moment of the day. People have started to also call this the “Social Web”, because it allows people to connect with communities. We can now go online and share videos, photos, stories, information a...
