RamTray
2008-03-17 00:00:00
I like the functionality of Vista's sidebar, although I'm not too keen on it's memory consumption. But after recently reverting back to XP I have found myself missing some of the basic functionality of the sidebar, including the built-in memory monitor widget. So I set out to make a new program. A light-weight application that monitors your RAM without the need for the Vista sidebar. It's perfect for those like me who have downgraded to XP or have turned off the sidebar in Vista. Introducing RamTray RamTray is a simple program that sits in your system tray (at the bottom right of your screen near the clock) and lets you know how much memory your computer is currently using. At a glance you are able to see just how much RAM is being used. Move your mouse over the icon to display the amount of memory used as a percentage and in megabytes. Easy to install Starts with Windows Small program that sits in the system tray Visually displays amount of memory used Display...
StumbleUpon Alerter Beta 1.2
2008-03-08 00:00:00
A new version of StumbleUpon Alerter has been released for those that were having problems with the version released yesterday. This patch fixes some of the issues pointed out over the last 24 hours. Usually I don't release software under beta, but I have done so with StumbleUpon Alerter. This is mainly because StumbleUpon does not have any API for developers to use (which probably explains the lack of tools available for the site). But I hope to have these issues fixed over time. Click here to download version 1.2 beta (1,727kb) Note: Make sure you close StumbleUpon Alerter before installing the new version. What's New? Newly found discoveries are displayed immediately - no need to restart (thanks kdfrawg) Fixed a few problems that occurred once you reach your maximum discoveries Changing the username no longer requires a restart (thanks nowsourcing) Frequently Asked Questions I have been getting a lot of questions regarding the software, so I thought it would be good...

How to: Get Banned from Google Local
2008-03-08 00:00:00
A few weeks ago I discussed the steps you should take to increase your exposure on Google Local (you can read the entire post by clicking here). Apparently a Melbourne based mechanic business didn't get the memo. Ignoring any sort of judgement or coherent thought process, they decided it would be a good idea to post 700 listings of their mechanic business to the new Google Local service. This resulted in 9 out of 10 search results for relevant keywords and page upon page of duplicate listings. Today a Google Local search no longer displays any results to the mechanics (1 day after Bruce Clay discovered the oddity). Which leads me to believe that the listing was removed by Google (And quite possibly banned forever). Was it worth it? Of course not. It may strike you as a bit odd, but Search Engine Optimisation is not only about making it to the front page of the major search engines. Anyone can catapult their website to the front page of the search giants, but it takes a real e...

Know the Rules and Protect your Domain Name
2008-03-08 00:00:00
Australian domain names (.com.au's) are regulated by a set of terms and conditions outlined by auDA, a self-regulatory body that has authority over the domain industry in Australia. There are certain guidelines and requirements that one must follow in order to register a domain. Failing to do so could result in the loss of the name and any valuable time and effort put into the branding and marketing of the name. Why all the regulations? The restrictions and regulations seem to be put into place to prevent some of the "cyber-squatting" that you see with .com domain names. The rules help to ensure that the owner of the domain name also owns the rights to a related business name, trademark, etc. .COM.AU Registration Requirements In order to protect your domain name you need to make sure it passes the requirements set out by the auDA. The general idea is that your domain name must meet one of the following requirements: The domain name must be an exact match, acronym or abbr...

10 Emerging Logo Trends in 2008
2008-03-08 00:00:00
Logo Orange sums up the latest trends in the logos that we see on highways, on consumer goods, on the Web and in the institutions and organizations we support. The trends can be summed up in 10 ways: 1. Organic 3D Here's something new for 2008 : we will be seeing 3d effects in logo design that will reach different places and stimulate different viewers who are craving for a new, fresh look! Polish those lenses and see 3D escalate to a higher level! 2. Waves - The New Swoosh That's it - no more swooshes! After years of being number one, swooshes have now been replaced by the so-called waves. Do you see these waves in the above logos? Top graphic designers use them to inject more flexibility and flow into the design. To highlight the idea of movement, logo designers execute a fade technique from one colour to another for this type of logo design 3. Web 2.0 Logos Designers often hear the term "web 2.0" from their customers who ask for this specific type of logo. The ...

StumbleUpon Alerter
2008-03-08 00:00:00
A few months ago I moved from Digg and focused my energy on StumbleUpon (click here to view my profile). To my surprise the site had a much friendlier community but lacked in some basic functionality. As someone who actively searches for new content I like to keep track of my discoveries on social networks, something that StumbleUpon is lacking. So I set out to make StumbleUpon Alerter. Introducing "StumbleUpon Alerter" The Beta Get alerted whenever your discovery on StumbleUpon is reviewed or given a thumbs up. StumbleUpon Alerter is a small tool that sits in the system tray. It keeps an eye on all of your discoveries on StumbleUpon and plays a noise whenever someone reviews or gives your sites a thumbs up. Australian WeatherBar
2008-02-20 00:00:00
Over the weekend I decided it was time to downgrade from Vista to XP (for reasons that I will not go into today). But one of the features I do miss is the Vista Sidebar, especially the weather feature. It was nice to see the current temperature and forecast on my desktop. But now I'm on XP and missing the weather sidebar. The free weather downloads are either for American cities or are too untrustworthy. So I set out to re-release one of my old favourites, WeatherBar. Re-Introducing WeatherBar WeatherBar is a free program that sits on your Windows desktop and displays the current temperature and the forecast for the next few days. The weather details are downloaded directly from the weather stations supplied by the Bureau of Meteorology and are updated every few minutes. Shows the current temperature on your desktop Adds a weather icon to your system tray Updates periodically View the temperature from your local weather station Works in all Australian states 3 - 4 day foreca...

3 Steps to Successful Business Blogging
2008-02-14 00:00:00
Changing your business blogging habits can bring more visitors to your site, get more people aware of your brand and ultimately generate more interest in you products or services. Follow these simple steps for business blogging success: Step 1. Stop selling your products Step away from the keyboard. Stop it, right now! I've seen so many business blogs fall into this trap. A blog is a communication tool and shouldn't be used for blatant self promotion. You should be offering informative information and resources that will ensure that your readers bookmark and subscribe to your blog. If you feel the need to promote your products and services you should try to do so in an informative and useful way. Stay away from over-used marketing buzz words that make you sound like a car sales person. Your product or service should complement the article, it should never be the primary focus. Ask yourself the following questions before posting an article. Is this article a useful res...

How to Game the Google Local Search Results
2008-01-17 00:00:00
On Tuesday I discussed the Bizarro World of Google Local . Staying on topic I decided to bring you the top 5 ways to "Game " the Google Local search results to increase your exposure and visibility on the popular search engine. 5 things every business should do to "Game" the Google Local search results Target Your Biggest Market - If you service the entire state it is best for you to target the capital city (or the area with the largest population). If you don't have an office or shop in the city it might be worthwhile investing in a GPO Box, as this will push you higher in the results. Smaller businesses should target their local area. Be the first - Submit your business before your competitors do. Preliminary tests have shown us that early adopters of Google Local seem to have a better chance of being listed on the front page. The 4 Week Waiting List - This may seem like a disadvantage but think again. You get an instant 4 week head-start on your competitors if no maps are l...

Bizarro Google (aka Google Local)
2008-01-17 00:00:00
There has been a lot of discussion about the recent addition of maps within the search results for location specific searches, known as Google Local . But are the listings being displayed fairly or are they being manipulated by businesses and websites? Do a quick search for "fish and chips christies beach" if you have yet to see this feature in action. It's a good way for the search giant to promote their mapping services while visually displaying targeted search results within your area (in theory). But look closer at the results and you will notice something very strange. Can you spot it? The first listing on the map is for a Fish & Chips shop located 39.7 km's away! In fact, the exact same "local" result is displayed for Adelaide, Richmond, Henley Beach and Unley. (just to name a few). Meanwhile the Salisbury and Brighton listing displays Fish & Chips stores located within the United Kingdom (even when you turn the pages from Australia feature on). It's hard not...

Twitter for Business: The Definitive Guide
2008-01-11 00:00:00
Twitter, the ever so popular "micro blogging" website, is here to stay (whether you like it or not). Last year proved to be a very good year for the service with 2008 looking even brighter. It's finally time to start using Twitter to promote your business. I can personally excuse the uninitiated for thinking Twitter is a place where others post about their mundane activities. At first glance this may seem to be the case, but look a little deeper and you will see far more. Truth be told, Twitter is a a world-wide conversation. A place where people gather to discuss the weather, politics and even business. Yes, Twitter has become a place of business.. And why not? Many businesses are already realizing its potential, gaining access to the 730,000+ members who use the service (many on an hourly basis). But why Twitter? Twitter isn't the "end all" of online marketing. But it is a great additional to your overall online strategy (especially for newcomers to social media). Twi...

40Twitter: Post updates every 40 minutes
2008-01-11 00:00:00
After writing Twitter for Business: The Definitive Guide I realised there was no software that could popup every so often and prompt me to update Twitter. So, I set out and made made it. The Twitter API is surprisingly easy to work with. If this proves successful we plan on writing more software (And websites) to support future articles on the site. It seems like a nice way to tie in our services with the topics that we publish. Introducing 40Twitter The software runs in the background and periodically reminds you to update your status on Twitter. With the click of a button you can update your status directly from within 40Twitter. You can even choose how often 40Twitter reminds you. Another year has passed, good bye 2007 -- hello 2008 ! We hope everyone had a wonderful new year. The celebrations are now over and it's now time to get inspired again. These are truly exciting times to be running a business. Many experts are predicting some big changes that will have the ability to change the face of business forever. Will you be taking advantage of these trends before your competitors do? Changes to Google, for better or worse? Many businesses rely on the sheer volume of targeted traffic that Google provides. When changes are made it is often felt all around the world. We have already seen plenty of changes over at Google in past few weeks, giving us insight into the future trends of Google in 2008: No more paid links - Google announced that paid links are now against their terms of service. Meaning anyone paying other websites to link to theirs will soon find their rank on Google slowly disappear. Never pay for links. I personally believe it is bad practic...

The Spirit of Website Past
2007-12-18 00:00:00
Even though changes and alterations to a website are immediate you can feel the presence of the old pages for months (and often years to come). The old site can often haunt your website statistics and send people in the wrong direction. But rest assured, there are ways to put these spirits at bay! It's nice to think of a website as having a spirit (or perhaps a little creepy). But the truth of the matter is: it doesn't. These problems stem mainly from external sources (other sites linking to yours, search engines linking to your site and even printed advertisements). When removing pages or sections from your site it is important to foresee the consequences. Doing so may be difficult. For example, If you are simply moving a page from one location to another it might be worthwhile creating a link on the existing page (instead of removing it completely). Alternatively, it is possible to redirect visitors to a custom error message when they visit a page that no longer exists....

Mayors Christmas Dinner Event (Updated)

This morning Heidi Lineham from Heidi Who Photos sent through the professional photos she took at the Mayors Christmas Dinner Event . I have to admit they are much better than the ones that I took. In the beautiful red dress is my fiance Annie, to the right of her is myself and the newly elected member for Kingston Amanda Rishworth. The event was held at the Christies Beach Surf Club, an icon of the South. The two-story building has breathtaking panoramic views that overlook the coast and the esplanade as it curves around the cliff face. Out of sheer coincidence it is also the venue that our wedding reception will be held. In fact, that wasn't the only similarity. The caterer and photographer will also be offering their services at our wedding. Talk about a small world! Read the entire story - View comments - Post a comment
The "Digg-Effect" VS The "CNN-Effect"
2007-12-13 00:00:00
Popular social news site “Digg ” has a reputation for being a democratic news website worthy of competing with mainstream sources such as CNN. Both news sources focus on completely different “news worthy” stories, but a few months ago we were lucky enough to have our site listed on Digg and CNN within 2 days of each other. Now it's time to share the results with the world. Formalities (AKA What is Digg?) Digg is referred to as a “democratic news website” - Any member can publish an article or story, linking directly to the original source. The community then decides whether the story is worthy of being displayed on the front page (also referred to as a “Digg”). Once a story receives enough Diggs it is automatically promoted to the front page, where thousands of visitors swarm to the site at the same time. This has been called the Digg Effect and can also lead to crashing of web servers and melt-downs at power stations (well, not the latter). You already know what CNN is, so I...

Digg Alerter Feature Requests

A few months back Adamant Solutions released Digg Alerter, a free application that runs on Windows and tracks your Digg submissions. It's actively used by some of the biggest submitters on Digg, even if it hasn't been updated recently. In fact I receive plenty of emails on a regular basis thanking me for developing the program and requesting the addition of new and improved features. In the past I have had to turn away some of the feature requests (partly because of real world priorities, the lead up to Christmas and planning for our wedding in just over a month now). Here's the good news! In the coming months I plan on adding many of the features that have been spinning around my head. I would also like to take this opportunity to give the Digg community a voice in the development process. Do you have a feature request? Then post a comment or send me an email.
