How NOT to do a sign-in screen
2008-05-05 18:53:00 Following a recent optimization campaign, I was met by this terrible signing in interface courtesy of web advertising site Clickey.com. I felt I should point out the problems with it as it is a usability problem that should not be occurring in today’s web environment. Firstly the terminology is way off. A task which involves ... 2008-04-17 16:44:00 As a web developer I use the Internet a lot as you might expect and I also have to fill out a lot of forms. Rich Internet Applications and Web 2.0
2008-04-15 00:14:00 Rich Internet Applications , the future basis for how users will be presented with web applications are slowly but surely killing off the standard, limited and occasionally inaccessible HTML methodologies that have been dominating Internet development over the last 10 years. But what exactly do RIAs mean to Web 2 .0? In-Depth User Interaction RIAs offer users a much ... More About: Rich , Websites
Gestalt Law of Similarity in Web Design
2008-04-10 00:31:00 Similarity in accessibility design is concerned with how a user perceives objects in a group that are alike, are related in context. For example, the diagram below would be perceived as alternating columns of circles and squares, rather than rows of alternating squares and circles: The same laws can be applied to web design. RSS on Non-Blogs
2008-04-01 23:47:00 Although syndication is most notably recalled for its powerful impact on the success of blogging technologies during the web 2.0 boom, it’s ability to inform users of new content on otherwise stand-alone sites is what is giving supporting sites a significant advantage. A content management system is useless if users are unaware that new ... More About: Web 2 , Blogging , Blogs , Websites

Flickr Video
2008-03-18 19:20:00 It has been rumoured that image-sharing Internet giant Flickr will soon be launching a user video-uploading service that could rival YouTube’s monopoly on the current market. High Keyword Density and Over-Optimization
2008-02-07 14:32:00 I've recently found a useful tool for assessing how well your website has been optimized for keywords. You simply enter your URL into the density checker where it counts how many words you have on a page, and presents the most popular ones in a tag cloud. Give it a try:Keyword Density CheckerHow to avoid over-optimization is contained in a few simple guideline, which helps you analyze the results from your check. It generally says that a percentage score of between 3% and 7% is recommended. Any higher percentage than this may be regarded as keyword stuffing, something which Google will penalize by reducing your search engine rankings.By Adam Moss More About: Optimization , High
What is FeedBurner?
2008-02-04 23:04:00 A lot of people want to know what's the point in Feedburner ? Why use Feedburner? And what does Feedburner do? I attempted to find out...Feedburner is a feed management system that was launched in 2004 and has now recently been acquired by Internet colossal Google. I?ve been trying to figure out what the point in Feedburner is for a while now and this is what I?ve come up with. Basically if you own any type of RSS feed whether it?s from a weblog or a Podcast or otherwise, Feedburner is a service that consolidates that feed so that a much wider variety of feed readers are capable of receiving it. The free service, which I have tested also comes with a control panel, which allows you to monitor how many people have subscribed to your feed and allows you to further optimise and publicise your feed.PingShot, FeedFlare & BuzzBoostOne useful item I did notice is the PingShot feature, which automatically notifies Web 2.0 giants such as Technorati, Yahoo! and Bloglines when you?ve adde...

Blogging as a Search Engine Marketing Strategy
2008-01-15 14:16:00 Web 2.0 has had many success stories as the integration between web content and user interaction becomes evermore seamless. However, the most popular of this new series of web technologies is blogging ? a means whereby users can post articles and opinions on any topic of their choosing on their own web space. The result of this is an online community where posters and readers can post comments, and more importantly, hyperlinks. As a SEO strategy, this can be a very effective method of communicating not only the existence, but the significance of your website in the industry, especially if corresponding blog posts speak favourably of your site. The major benefit is that blogs can reach very wide audiences if implemented and promoted correctly. Imagine a situation where everytime you had an idea to share, 5,000 people who trust your opinions see it in your blog. The majority of those 5,000 people also write blogs in your field or related fields. Some of those bloggers may frequently m... Search Engine Optimization (SEO) Vs Usability
2008-01-09 23:28:00 This article is an investigation into whether search engine optimisation and usability are compatible, enabling a user to find a website in a search engine, and then find what they?re looking for once they?ve found it.Usability and search engine optimisation are both of fundamental importance when developing websites on for the Internet. SEO should be given precedence in the design of a website to improve the chances of users actually finding the site in the first place. Likewise, usability should be of high priority so that users aren?t put off using the site within seconds of finding it.When optimising a website by maximizing keywords, it is essential not to disrupt the quality of content on the page being optimised. There is no point in spending time and money on directing traffic to your site if the user will back straight out. If you're at all interested in repeat traffic, usability has to come first. (Peter V, 352media.com: 2007) The result of poor quality text in a keyword-o... More About: Search Engine Optimization , Search , Search Engine , Optimization

The Four Horsemen

2007-06-07 12:51:00 I finally got around to making the second part of what is going to be a trilogy of Shelf Life escapades. For some reason YouTube cut two seconds off the end of the film causing it to end more abruptly than I anticipated.
Web Who?
2007-06-06 13:36:00 I was browsing Web 2.0 news on May 8th when I found out about a recent study by Princeton University, which discovered that only 8% of US adults are users of Web 2.0 technologies despite 73% of them have Internet connections. Why is there a disinterest in Web 2.0 among adults? The survey didn?t include teenagers, though I?m sure if it did we?d be looking at a higher percentage as it does seem to be that generation that dominates discussion boards and data sharing sites such as YouTube. On CRN Australia it was reported that ?the report doesn't offer much to console sellers of PCs, mobile phones, iPods, and the like about their future prospects except to say the young represent a more receptive set of potential customers. ?Two of the four tech-oriented groups have a higher-than average percentage of members who are full- or part-time students,? the report says.? My theory is that it is simply down to time and place. Students and teenagers have more time in their lives for web Sur...
Enterprise Web 2.0
2007-06-06 01:02:00 It took me a while to find significant research to debate this topic, which I?ve wanted to examine for a while. What are the business implications of Web 2.0? Is there real business value in the concept of having users become contributors and co-creators of a company?s online environment? I discovered an article on business technology website http://blogs.zdnet.com/Hinchcliffe/index. php?p=14 by Dion Hinchcliffe, which argues the case for implementing Web 2.0 technologies into business operations with a host of success stories. He compiled this diagram, displaying what conditions create a successful utilisation of Web 2.0 technologies: It?s no secret that Google, eBay and Amazon are tremendously thriving businesses, all of which began as Web 2.0 technologies in the Web 1.0 era. ?The argument is they did this by leveraging user contributions, offering open Web services for others to integrate with, building hard to recreate data sources, etc.? Amazon and eBay were more than just onli... More About: Enterprise
Desk-toppled
2007-06-05 21:34:00 Microsoft has dominated the computer market comfortably for the last two decades with their unrivalled operating system and office software. Microsoft didn?t see Web 2.0 coming and could ultimately pay the price in the future as the desktop?s usage is reduced in favour of more accessible, cheaper and newer Web 2.0 alternatives. I was reading a short article in the latest edition of Wired magazine and it inspired me to bring up this debate, which chiefly hypothesises that ?service software? available online will eventually override the need for owning expensive software in a world where it is possible to connect to the Internet from any computer, in or out of the office. Let?s take Internet giant Google for example. It has recently developed a collection of online applications including a suite of personal productivity tools that rival Microsoft Office. It also provides users with 10GB of data storage ? surely no less than most businessmen require to store Office data on their laptop... More About: Desk
