News : Microsoft says made fair offer to Yahoo
2008-04-11 17:18:00
MUMBAI (Reuters) - Microsoft Corp believes it has made a fair offer to acquire Yahoo and is committed to bolstering its digital advertising capabilities irrespective of the outcome, its chief operating officer said. "We believe we've made a very fair offer to Yahoo's board of directors," Kevin Turner said at a news conference in Mumbai to launch strategic initiatives with India's HCL Infosystems Ltd. "Currently, it's in their hands to decide the outcome of that offer," he said. Microsoft had threatened on Saturday to launch a hostile bid for Yahoo and could lower its offer of $42.4 billion in about three weeks if it does not get a deal, which Yahoo argues is worth more than Microsoft's bid. The New York Times reported this week News Corp was in talks to join Microsoft's bid for the Web pioneer. The offer for Yahoo was in line with Microsoft's aim to enhance its digital advertising capabilities, Turner said. "We will continue to drive market...

News : MySpaceTV lands global TV distribution deal
2008-04-10 22:59:00
By Kenneth Li NEW YORK (Reuters) - A company founded by Rupert Murdoch's daughter will help News Corp's MySpace distribute Web shows on television and DVDs outside the United States, as the world's largest social network seeks an audience away from the computer. The move is a play to make shows such as MySpaceTV's "Quarterlife" or "Roommates" available outside of the United States, or create localized versions of the shows, said Travis Katz, managing director of MySpace's international arm. The partnership with ShineReveille, the distribution arm of Elisabeth Murdoch-founded Shine Group, is one of News Corp's most ambitious plays to underscore MySpace as a media platform, distinguishing itself from fast-moving rival Facebook. "Partnering with ShineReveille empowers us to export MySpaceTV content to local TV networks globally -- something we've never been able to in the past," Katz said in a phone interview. Just last week, MySpace announced a dea...

News : Microsoft seen as winner as big media circles Yahoo
2008-04-10 22:56:00
NEW YORK (Reuters) - Yahoo Inc may have played its top two cards by pulling out possible deals with AOL and Google, but it does not seem to have changed Wall Street's view that Microsoft will eventually win the takeover battle. Yahoo announced on Wednesday a test to outsource Web search advertising to Google Inc. Sources say the test is part of a planned three-way alliance to combine Yahoo with Time Warner Inc's AOL instead of Microsoft Corp. But hours later, the world's largest software company appeared to trump Yahoo's announcement as the New York Times reported that Rupert Murdoch's News Corp was in talks to join Microsoft's $42.3 billion bid for the Web pioneer. "Everyone is just exploring. The best option is to accept the Microsoft deal," said fund manager Mike Binger at Thrivent Financial in Minneapolis, which owns small stakes in Yahoo and Microsoft. Binger said an AOL-Yahoo merger made no sense. "I just see Yahoo as a mature brand and AOL as a d...

News : Japan develops brain and eye pills for gaming fans
2008-04-09 17:02:00
TOKYO (Reuters) - Gaming addicts with sore eyes and tired brains may be able to perk up with "Game Suppli", a new Japan ese supplement developed specifically for the country's thousands of fanatic players. "We concentrated on developing a supplement for those who love games," reads the advert for the pills on www.cybergadget.co.jp, a Web site that sells a range of accessories for video game fans. Maker Kyowa-Yakuhin produces two different supplements for the "Game Suppli" range: blueberry tablets that are meant to be good for the eyes, and transparent capsules containing Docosahexaenoic acid, or DHA, a fatty acid that supposedly enhances concentration. Japan's convenience stores are stacked with drinks and capsules claiming various health and beauty benefits, sometimes without any scientific evidence. News : How new technology keeps the flame burning
2008-04-09 16:57:00
By Karolos Grohmann ATHENS (Reuters) - The tradition of the Olympic flame is rooted in Greek sporting heritage dating back thousands of years but new technology keeps the fire burning whatever the elements -- or modern-day protester -- can throw at it. Well, almost. This week a torch was briefly extinguished in Paris to keep it from protesters opposing China's policy in Tibet. The Olympic flame, though, did not go out. Two lamps, lit from the original flame of Olympia, accompany the relay and help light thousands of torches carried by bearers who include celebrities, politicians and athletes on its 85,000 mile journey. The Beijing torch burns on environmentally-friendly propane gas and its flame can last up to 15 minutes. Every torchbearer has a separate torch which they can buy to keep as a souvenir at the end of their run. "(The gas) is composed of carbon and hydrogen. No material, except carbon dioxide and water remain after the burning,...

News : Legg Mason ready to back Yahoo if offer lowered
2008-04-09 16:53:00
NEW YORK (Reuters) - A major Yahoo Inc shareholder, Legg Mason, is ready to back Yahoo's effort to stay independent if Microsoft Corp lowers its buyout offer, the Wall Street Journal said, citing an interview with portfolio manager Bill Miller. "The problem is Microsoft blundered with the letter this weekend," Miller told the Journal, referring to Microsoft Chief Executive Steve Ballmer's letter to Yahoo giving it three weeks to evaluate the $42 billion takeover offer, after which it threatened to resort to a proxy battle. "Telling the shareholders you're going to take something away from them is not a way to get their support," Miller told the Journal. Yahoo countered Microsoft's deadline earlier this week, saying the offer still undervalued it and that the threat of a proxy battle was counterproductive. In a letter to Ballmer, Yahoo said it would only be open to a better deal. The support of major Yahoo shareholders is vital for both companies at this s...

News : Google maps give close-up view of U.N. refugee camps
2008-04-08 17:13:00
By Laura MacInnis GENEVA (Reuters) - Google technology first envisaged as a video game backdrop has been adapted to raise awareness -- and potentially financial support -- for the plight of refugees and vulnerable people once far from the public eye. The search engine's Google Earth platform, a mapping service that allows users to move through three-dimensional satellite images of city streets and countryside, now offers a close-up view of U.N. refugee camps and aid projects. Rebecca Moore, head of Earth Outreach for Google, said the browsable, high-definition pictures of humanitarian crisis zones stood to captivate a mass audience that may not otherwise see them. Many of the 350 million people who have downloaded Google Earth use it to scan for holiday destinations or to see what other corners of the world look like from above. The sharp satellite images are updated about every month, though in some places they are older and in others no public shots exist....

News : Robots seen doing work of 3.5 million people in Japan
2008-04-08 17:10:00
TOKYO (Reuters) - Robots could fill the jobs of 3.5 million people in grayingJapan by 2025, a thinktank says, helping to avert worker shortages as the country's population shrinks. Japan faces a 16 percent slide in the size of its workforce by 2030 while the number of elderly will mushroom, the government estimates, raising worries about who will do the work in a country unused to, and unwilling to contemplate, large-scale immigration. The thinktank, the Machine Industry Memorial Foundation, says robots could help fill the gaps, ranging from microsized capsules that detect lesions to high-tech vacuum cleaners. Rather than each robot replacing one person, the foundation said in a report that robots could make time for people to focus on more important things. Japan could save 2.1 trillion yen ($21 billion) of elderly insurance payments in 2025 by using robots that monitor the health of older people, so they don't have to rely on human nursing care, the found...

News : Amazon.com beefs up Latin music store
2008-04-07 17:37:00
By Ayala Ben-Yehuda LOS ANGELES (Billboard) - Amazon relaunched its Latin music store Friday, with video content from top artists, more bilingual product descriptions and a selection that's grown by at least 10% in less than a year. The online retailer will also shortly introduce blogs by Latin artists on their product pages, as well as partner with them for video debuts and possible event sponsorships, music category manager Craig Pape says. "We obsessively look at three core pillars of selection, value and discovery, and we're always going through our store and saying, 'Are there ways we can challenge ourselves to improve in all these areas?'" says Pape, whose store is turning 10 this year. "We know that the Hispanic consumer is one of the fastest-growing online customer segments." Building on sales-driving video debuts with artists like Bruce Springsteen and Annie Lennox, Amazon will put a video player on its Latin store and have artists post blogs in ...

News : Yahoo rebuffs Microsoft, says open to better deal
2008-04-07 17:32:00
By Franklin Paul NEW YORK (Reuters) - Yahoo Inc (YHOO.O: Quote, Profile, Research), responding to a three-week deadline issued by Microsoft Corp (MSFT.O: Quote, Profile, Research) to accept its $42 billion takeover bid, again rejected the deal for undervaluing the Web pioneer. In a defiant open letter to Microsoft Chief Executive Steve Ballmer on Monday, Yahoo said the software giant's threat of a proxy battle was counterproductive and Yahoo would only be open to a better deal. "Our board's view of your proposal has not changed," said the letter, signed by Yahoo Chairman Roy Bostock and Chief Executive Jerry Yang. "We continue to believe that your proposal is not in the best interests of Yahoo and our stockholders." Ballmer on Saturday set a three-week deadline for Yahoo to agree to its cash-and-stock offer or risk seeing the bid lowered, citing a deteriorating economy and market for Internet stocks, as well as a decline in Yahoo's share of the Web search ...

News : Microsoft evaluating Yahoo bid: sources
2008-04-05 18:25:00
By Anupreeta Das SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Microsoft Corp is evaluating its bid for Yahoo Inc because the Internet company may have lost value since Microsoft made its offer, people familiar with the matter said on Friday. The news, first reported by Reuters, sent Yahoo shares down more than 5 percent in extended trade. After weeks of silence, recent comments from various sources to journalists suggest the software maker is hardening its stance and pushing Yahoo for action. The sources told Reuters that Yahoo has lost key personnel, making the company less valuable, while generous severance packages it handed out to executives and full-time employees in the case of a takeover have made it more expensive. Yahoo's board of directors has rejected Microsoft's offer, made on January 31, saying it "substantially undervalues" the company. The cash-and-stock bid initially valued Yahoo at $44.6 billion, but is currently worth about $42 billion. Yahoo and...

News : Google unveils personal medical record service
2008-02-29 16:29:00
ORLANDO, Florida (Reuters) - Google Inc has unveiled a plan to help U.S. patients gain control of their medical records and is working with doctors' groups, pharmacies and labs to help them securely share sensitive health data. The company's long-rumored entry into the highly sensitive field came when Chief Executive Eric Schmidt introduced Google Health at a health-care conference in Florida on Thursday. Google said it has signed deals with hospitals and companies including medical tester Quest Diagnostics Inc, health insurer Aetna Inc, Walgreens and Walmart Stores Inc pharmacies. The password-protected Web service stores health records on Google computers, with a medical services directory that lets users import doctors' records, drug history and test results. Google aims to foster sharing of information between these services, but keep control in patients' hands, allowing them to schedule appointments or refill prescriptions, for example. "We don...

News : Microsoft's latest interoperability pledge: How free is 'open' now?
2008-02-23 03:16:00
No move by Microsoft to share information with its competitors will ever be taken at face value, and certainly yesterday's new Interoperability Principle will come under very close scrutiny. Is this the opening of the floodgates the EC has been demanding? In incremental, measured, if slow steps, Microsoft has made some efforts to comply with directives from the European Commission to make its software and protocols more interoperable with products from other manufacturers. Yesterday, the company surrendered one more boundary between its interoperability policy and the EC's dream situation, making a huge chunk of the information it published in response to the EC's order available to developers free of charge."We're announcing that developers will not need to take a license, or pay a royalty, or other fee to access any of that information," revealed CEO Steve Ballmer yesterday (according to Microsoft's transcript). "As an immediate first step to apply the principles today we're ...

News : Microsoft: Takeover Offer in Yahoo's Best Interest
2008-02-12 16:23:00
Microsoft says Yahoo's rejection of its multibillion dollar buyout offer is "unfortunate," and that moving forward on a deal is in both companies' best interest.Microsoft said Yahoo's response Monday "does not change our belief in the strategic and financial merits of our proposal."The Redmond, Wash., software maker added that it reserves the right to "pursue all necessary steps" to ensure Yahoo's shareholders have a chance to benefit from the offer that was initially valued at $31 per share.Yahoo Bets on Higher Offer Yahoo spurned Microsoft's $44.6 billion takeover bid as inadequate Monday, betting that it can elicit a higher offer from the world's largest software maker or find another way to deliver a comparable payoff to its shareholders. The rebuff by the slumping Internet pioneer had been widely anticipated after word of Yahoo's intention was leaked during the weekend. In its formal response, Yahoo said its board had concluded Microsoft's unsolicited offer "substantially ...
