News : Olympic flame reaches Everest peak
2008-05-08 17:20:00
After days of waiting for weather to clear, the Olympic flame makes it to the top of the world's highest mountain. The Everest climbing team, which included 22 Tibetans, eight Han Chinese and one man from the Tujia minority had been on the mountain for over a week. Two days of snow at the weekend destroyed some of their roped paths but good weather over the last three days allowed the climbers to repair damage to the routes and finally reach the summit. News : Academic says gadgets threaten Internet's future
2008-05-08 17:15:00
By Peter Griffiths LONDON (Reuters) - The rise of gadgets like the iPhone, Blackberry and Xbox threatens to unravel the decades of innovation that helped to build the Internet, a leading academic has warned in a new book. Professor Jonathan Zittrain says the latest must-have devices are sealed, "sterile" boxes that stifle creativity and turn consumers into passive users of technology. Unlike home computers, new Internet-enabled gadgets don't lend themselves to the sort of tinkering and collaboration that leads to technological advances, he says. The mix of gadgets, over-regulation and Internet security fears could destroy the old system where mainstream technology could be "influenced, even revolutionized, out of left field". "I don't want to see a two-tier world where only the experts can survive ... and the non-experts are stuck between something they don't understand and something that limits them," Zittrain told Reuters in an interview. News : Microsoft sends out feelers to Facebook
2008-05-08 17:11:00
SEATTLE (Reuters) - Microsoft Corp gauged Facebook 's interest in a possible acquisition after the software giant's failed takeover attempt of Yahoo Inc, the Wall Street Journal reported on Wednesday. The newspaper reported on its Web site that Microsoft's bankers put out subtle signals to Facebook, the social networking Web site, to see if it would be open to a full acquisition. The talks were first reported by Web site All Things Digital, owned by Wall Street Journal publisher Dow Jones. Facebook spokeswoman Brandee Barker declined to comment on the report. Microsoft officials were not immediately available for comment. In October, Microsoft took a $240 million stake in Facebook, which valued the start-up at $15 billion. Citing an unnamed source, the report said there are no active discussions between the two companies. The news came a few days after Microsoft dropped its unsolicited offer to buy Yahoo for $47.5 billion. The aim of that proposal was...

News : Facebook users willing to let employers see profiles
2008-05-08 17:06:00
By Claire Sibonney TORONTO (Reuters) - While many Facebook users may be secretly surfing the social networking site on the job, many Canadians say they are willing to let their employer look at their profiles, according to a poll released on Wednesday. Almost half of 1,200 people questioned in an online survey said they would be comfortable sharing their personal profile with their current employer, while two in five would consider letting prospective employers look at their Facebook account in addition to their resume. "Everybody is trying to figure out the best thing to do with it and our sense is 'embrace it'," said Brian Singh, managing director of ZINC Research, which conducted the poll with Dufferin Research. Many Canadian companies and government departments have blocked office Internet access to Facebook, the most popular social networking site in the country. The poll showed that out of Facebook's 9 million Canadian members, almost 9 in 10 a...

News : BT launches BlackBerry-style device with broadband
2008-05-07 17:48:00
LONDON (Reuters) - BT Group signaled its return to the mobile market on Wednesday by launching a BlackBerry-style smart-phone as part of its broadband deal for users to surf the Web and make calls when not at home. "Communications services are converging, and it is clear that customers want consistent access to the things that matter not only at home, but in the palm of their hands wherever they are," said Consumer managing director John Petter. BT, a former monopoly and Britain's dominant fixed-line operator, is among the few large telecom groups in Europe not to own a mobile network after it demerged its mobile operation in 2001. Consumers will have a choice of two smart phones from Taiwan-based High Tech Computer Corp (HTC) which will connect to the Internet at broadband speeds and provide cheaper calls when in a WiFi hotspot. The BlackBerry email device was originally popular with business executives but it is increasingly attracting a wider consumer mar...

News : Pope goes digital to better connect with youth
2008-05-07 17:43:00
SYDNEY (Reuters) - Pope Benedict will text message thousands of young Catholics on their mobile phones during World Youth Day in Sydney in July, hoping going digital will help him connect better with a younger audience. The Pope will text daily messages of inspiration and hope during the six-day Sydney event while digital prayer walls will be erected at event sites and the church will set up a Catholic social networking Web site akin to a Catholic Facebook. The Catholic Church said it decided to use technology to connect to the estimated 225,000 young Catholics expected to attend the World Youth Day (WYD) celebrations that start on July 15. "We wanted to make WYD08 a unique experience by using new ways to connect with today's tech-savvy youth," Bishop Anthony Fisher said in a statement on Wednesday. Australian telecoms firm Telstra will provide voice, data, mobile, broadband and broadcast services for the event, as well as erect digital prayer walls at event...

News : Microsoft brings TV shows from NBC, others to Zune
2008-05-06 17:25:00
SEATTLE (Reuters) - Microsoft Corp said it will start offering television shows for its Zune portable media device, more than two years after Apple Inc introduced the feature for its iPod player. Microsoft's Zune has one thing that Apple's market-defining iPod and accompanying iTunes store does not -- TV programs from General Electric's NBC Universal. Those shows and more than 800 TV episodes including Comedy Central's "South Park" and MTV's "The Hills" will be available at the Zune store starting on Tuesday for the equivalent of $1.99 in Microsoft points that must be purchased in advance. Last year, Apple split with NBC, removing the network's television shows from iTunes. Microsoft will carry NBC shows like "The Office" and "Heroes" for playback on the Zune, which has failed to dent the dominant market share of Apple's iPod since its 2006 debut. The Zunes have video playback capability, but content available for the devices has been limited to music ...

News : Vodafone, Tel.Italia iPhone deals end exclusivity
2008-05-06 17:22:00
LONDON/AMSTERDAM (Reuters) - Telecoms companies Vodafone and Telecom Italia will both sell Apple Inc's iPhone in Italy, in an apparent break from previous exclusive carrier deals. So far, Apple has struck exclusive deals with carriers to sell the phone, such as with AT&T in the United States, Telefonica's O2 in Britain and Deutsche Telekom in Germany. Neither Vodafone nor Telecom Italia provided many details. "Telecom Italia announced today it has signed a deal with Apple to bring the iPhone to Italy later this year," was all that the Italian group had to say on Tuesday. Vodafone said it would sell the iPhone -- a touch-screen device which combines Apple's popular iPod music player, a video player and Web browser -- in 10 countries. "Later this year, Vodafone customers in Australia, the Czech Republic, Egypt, Greece, Italy, India, Portugal, New Zealand, South Africa and Turkey will be able to purchase the iPhone for use on the Vodafone network," ...

News : Yahoo CEO open to more Microsoft talks
2008-05-06 17:17:00
By Michele Gershberg NEW YORK (Reuters) - Yahoo Inc chief Jerry Yang signaled a more open stance towards Microsoft Corp on Monday, saying he had been seeking common ground when the software maker abruptly ended deal talks. Yang told Reuters in an interview that he had "mixed feelings" about the weekend outcome, after investors showed their disappointment over the break-up of negotiations by sending Yahoo shares down 15 percent. "We were negotiating a way to find common ground and then on Saturday they chose to walk away," said the 39-year-old co-founder of the pioneering Internet company. "They started it and they walked away." Asked if Yahoo would still leave a door open for Microsoft to return, Yang said: "If they have anything new to say, we would be open. ... I am more than willing to listen." After three months of negotiations, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer raised his offer for Yahoo to $33 per share from an initial $31, for a total deal value of abo...

News : Nokia to offer "a lot" of new phones in the U.S.
2008-05-05 17:20:00
HELSINKI (Reuters) - Nokia (NOK1V.HE: Quote, Profile, Research) is going to introduce many new phone models through U.S. carriers in coming months to grab a bigger share of the lucrative cell phone market, the Finnish phone maker said on Monday. Nokia sells 40 percent of all phones sold globally, but in the United States its share has been staggering around 10 percent as the Finnish firm has dropped own production of phones using CDMA technology, popular in the U.S. Finnish daily Helsingin Sanomat quoted Nokia chief designer as saying design cooperation with U.S. operators will bear fruit soon. "In the next few months (U.S.) operators will carry a lot of new products from us," Alastair Curtis told the paper. A Nokia spokesman said the company would introduce a number of new models in the United States this year -- including CDMA phones, models tailored for the U.S. carriers and phones sold globally. News : Investors eye Yahoo's alternatives to Microsoft
2008-05-05 17:15:00
By Michele Gershberg and Anupreeta Das NEW YORK/SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Yahoo Inc faced growing pressure on Sunday to find an alternative strategy to Microsoft Corp's $47.5 billion takeover offer after the software maker walked away over a disagreement on price. Yahoo shares could fall by more than 30 percent on Monday over the breakdown of talks, but that drop could be softened if Wall Street believes Yahoo Chief Executive Jerry Yang has another strategy up his sleeve, analysts said. Yahoo is likely to push for an advertising partnership with Web search leader Google Inc, sources familiar with the matter said. A tie-up with Google, seen as a big winner from the end of Microsoft-Yahoo talks, should help boost Yahoo's operating performance in the near term. "It's time to get a move on with Google," said Jeffrey Lindsay, analyst with Sanford C. Bernstein. "Let's hope they weren't bluffing." Yahoo is also still considering a deal with another Intern...

News : Apple's iTunes sells movies on DVD release date
2008-05-02 18:40:00
By Sue Zeidler LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Apple Inc said on Thursday it reached deals with top Hollywood studios to sell movies on its iTunes download service on the same day as the titles are released in DVD form, bringing its clout to a nascent market for video entertainment. Apple shares rose more than 3 percent after the news as investors hoped the new movie sales would boost purchases of Apple's portable iPod media player and Apple TV, as well as fuel growth for iTunes. Privately-held CinemaNow and Blockbuster Inc's Movielink already offer similar services for downloading movies on the same day as DVD release, but Apple's entry is expected to expand that market. "Apple will increase awareness of digital downloads and it's clearly a good thing for the studios who want to offer viable digital alternatives," Craig Kornblau, president of Universal Studios Home Entertainment, told Reuters. "We think this is a game changer." ITunes will offer new releas...

News : GTA 4 poised to dominate Xbox Live
2008-05-02 18:36:00
By Kemp Powers LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Players of the popular "Grand Theft Auto" video game series have always reveled in its unique blend of beatings, shootings and vehicular mayhem. With "Grand Theft Auto 4," they are taking the carnage online, which may dethrone first-person shooters like "Halo 3" and "Call of Duty 4" from the top ranks of the popular Xbox Live service. Only a few non-shooter games have ever sat at the top of the list of most-played games on the service, which debuted in 2002 and is viewed by many gamers as primarily the domain of shooter enthusiasts. "Grand Theft Auto 4" went on sale Tuesday for the Xbox 360 and Sony's Playstation 3. Critics have raved about the online multiplayer options in the game, calling it surprisingly robust for a series that has until now been exclusively a solo experience. Up to 16 players can participate in 15 different online game types, ranging from cooperative play to cops-and-robbers team matches to f...

By Nicole Maestri NEW YORK (Reuters) - Forget the flowers and candy -- Nintendo Co Ltd's (7974.OS: Quote, Profile, Research) highly anticipated "Wii Fit" video game will debut in the U.S. later this month, and Wal-Mart Stores Inc's (WMT.N: Quote, Profile, Research) online division is trying to persuade shoppers to order the game as "a perfect gift" for Mother's Day. This weekend, the Walmart .com homepage will be dominated by the Wii Fit -- a physical exercise program that uses a pressure-sensing board as a controller -- including a link to order the product now, ahead of its May 19 U.S. launch. Through May 11, shoppers who "pre-order" the $89.74 game, or pay in advance to guarantee delivery when the game launches, will also get a $10 online gift card to use for a future order at Walmart.com. News : Industry leaders join push for home media networks
2008-04-30 17:30:00
FRANKFURT (Reuters) - Chip and electronics makers Intel (INTC.O: Quote, Profile, Research), Infineon (IFXGn.DE: Quote, Profile, Research), Texas Instruments (TXN.N: Quote, Profile, Research) and Panasonic (6752.T: Quote, Profile, Research) have formed an alliance to promote home networks for movies, music and pictures using domestic wiring. The four leading chip and electronics makers will help market and test a standard to wire together computers, TVs and entertainment systems using electricity, phone and coaxial cable lines that already exist in most homes, they said on Tuesday. They hope the first products using the new standard will be on the market in about a year. Consumer electronics and computer makers have long talked of the so-called digital home, in which entertainment appliances and PCs are linked and typically controlled from the computer, making it easy to share digital media content between devices. But a lack of common standards between makers...

News : DreamWorks' Katzenberg disappointed with 3D talks
2008-04-30 17:27:00
By Sue Zeidler LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - DreamWorks Animation SKG (DWA.N: Quote, Profile, Research) Chief Executive Jeffrey Katzenberg on Tuesday said he was disappointed with the pace at which movie theater chains were moving to deploy digital and 3-D technology. "Things haven't progressed as well as I had hoped," Katzenberg told analysts on a quarterly conference call. "I feel as though things have dragged along, and it's been pretty disappointing," said Katzenberg, a huge proponent of 3-D films, who has pledged to make all future films in 3-D at an incremental cost of $15 million per film. For Dreamworks, which makes about two films a year, that commitment to 3-D amounts to about $30 million per year. Katzenberg on the conference call said he still believed DreamWorks will see a good return on its investment based on projected ticket prices and the number of 3-D screens he is certain will be in the market by the time his studio's first 3-D film, "Mo...

News : Nokia confident free music downloads will profit
2008-04-30 17:24:00
By Tarmo Virki HELSINKI (Reuters) - Offering unlimited music downloads to phone buyers will make money for Nokia as well as record labels, the handset maker said, dismissing talk the move would come at the expense of profits. "We expect to make money both from our traditional device sales, as well as from the 'Comes With Music ' service," said Liz Schimel, head of Nokia's music business. "I can assure you that we are looking out for everyone's interests in creating these new business models, including our own." The new music offering from Nokia, the first cellphone maker to push heavily into content, would differ from any other package on the market as users can keep all the music they have downloaded during the 12 months. Last week Nokia struck a deal with Sony BMG to offer the label's tracks in its "Comes with Music" service, adding to last December's deal with top record label Universal. Having the world's two largest labels on board looks set ...

News : Yahoo's open platform now has a name and a mascot
2008-04-28 17:33:00
If the software industry truly is to transcend the PC level and start an entirely new economy on a Web platform, then it doesn't appear any one player will have an automatic, native advantage. Yahoo is gambling it will be one of those players. There are four centers of gravity emerging in the complex and semi-defined social Web services field, where the application platform is moved from the local or company network to the Web. The proprietors at these four points include Microsoft, whose Live Mesh concept was given more definition just two days ago. Then there's Adobe, which is constructing a Web services platform around Flash using AIR. Also there is Google, whose tenacity alone is testament to its formidability. And as of today, we know for certain that the other center of gravity in "open," social Web services will be Yahoo, especially if it continues to render moot the need for a merger with Microsoft."We are literally in the process of re-wiring Yahoo from the inside out, to c...

News : Gene therapy improves sight in near-blind patients
2008-04-28 17:25:00
By Deena Beasley and Ben Hirschler LOS ANGELES/LONDON (Reuters) - Gene therapy for a rare type of inherited blindness has improved the vision of four patients who tried it, boosting hopes for the troubled field of gene repair technology, scientists said on Sunday. Two separate teams of doctors reported successes in using gene therapy to treat Leber congenital amaurosis, or LCA. LCA damages light receptors in the retina. It usually begins affecting sight in early childhood and causes total blindness by the time a patient is 30. There is no treatment. Both teams used a common cold virus to deliver a normal version of one damaged gene that causes the disease, called RPE65, directly into the eyes of patients. Although both trials were only testing for safety, patients reported they could see a little better afterwards, the researchers told a meeting of eye specialists in Florida and also reported in the New England Journal of Medicine. Dr. Katherine H...

News : "Grand Theft Auto 4" set to entertain and inflame
2008-04-26 17:37:00
SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Beatings, carjackings, drive-by shootings, drunk driving and hookers. For video game fans, it can only mean one thing: "Grand Theft Auto 4" is here, with all the subtlety of a shotgun blast. The latest chapter in the wildly popular and controversial criminal action franchise from Take-Two Interactive Software Inc (TTWO.O: Quote, Profile, Research) is poised to be the biggest entertainment product of the year, with expected first-week sales of up to $400 million -- dwarfing Hollywood's biggest box-office openings. The handiwork of Take-Two's Rockstar game studio headed by British brothers Sam and Dan Houser, "Grand Theft Auto 4," which will be launched next Tuesday, promises to crank up the thuggish drama that made previous installments the equivalent of "The Godfather" for Generation PlayStation. "We also felt over the last few years there hadn't been a great standout gangster movie. Maybe we could do something ourselves that would live...
