My new toy: Canon EOS 400D camera
2007-05-30 15:39:00
One of my projects is to make a HDR gallery on this website or maybe on a new domain. I was using a very small camera until now and it was impossible to make good HDR photos with it, so I decided to make a good purchase: the canon EOS 400D camera! :) This camera isn't very expensive (only about $900-$1000 in Europe) for all the technology you get in your hands! For more details about this great camera, look at this page . Here my first HDR photo made in my garden yesterday, and for a first shot, I think it's not so bad! What do you think? :)

This is not a photograph!
2007-05-24 13:49:00
I already wrote some posts about photoshop speed painting art on this website but here, believe it or not, this is not a digital painting !! This is not a photograph, but a digital painting recreating a photo of a model named Tica. Artist Dru Blair has a detailed explanation of how it was done, including larger images of the process. See the details! This painting was completed in February 2005. It was a Portrait Class project that Dru Blair decided to finish in his spare time after the workshop. Dru said: "It probably took a total of around 65-75 hours to complete" ! Ian, Dru and Darryl pose in front of the Tica original painting during the April 05 Workshop. Dru Blair's Biography "Dru Blair was born in Newbern, NC., September 7. Growing up in Columbia, SC, his ambitions originally were directed toward a career in medicine. However, during his undergraduate studies at Furman University in Greenville, SC, he discover...

Avoiding Firefox?s link border
2007-05-17 14:17:00
As you already have noticed, Firefox adds a dotted border around a link when you click on it and this is very annoying when we have links on images. The CSS outline properties is used to draw a line around an element, outside the border edge. You can specify the style, color, and width of the outline. But the most important here is that the css outine properties enables us to avoid this line around links if we want :) Here the solution to remove this dotted border using CSS: a:active, a:focus { outline: 0 } For more information about the css outline properties: www.w3schools.com/...

Web 2.0 distracts good design
2007-05-14 15:36:00
"Hype about Web 2.0 is making web firms neglect the basics of good design, web usability guru Jakob Nielsen has said. He warned that the rush to make webpages more dynamic often meant users were badly served. He said sites peppered with personalisation tools were in danger of resembling the "glossy but useless" sites at the height of the dotcom boom. Research into website use shows that sites were better off getting the basics right, said Mr Nielsen. Describing Web 2.0 as the "latest fashion", Mr Nielsen said many sites paying attention to it were neglecting some of the principles of good design and usability established over the last decade." Interview with Philippe Lemesle
2007-05-13 20:24:00
Philippe Lemesle is a fresh new member of sNews community. His goals through Nomasis, are to offer to local companies near Paris, tools to speed up their web marketing. David: Hello Philippe Philippe: Hi David. David: Philippe, how and when did you discover sNews? Philippe: Well well well? let me first say when : it might help me then to answer how. I am a marketing consultant and late January I had a customer who asked me why its company?s website created in 2005 has no visitors. He wanted a website to generate traffic, convert more visitors to leads, turn more leads into customers and he was thinking an attractive design would be a kinda honeypot, except that its company wasn?t selling web design but equipments for airports. And that was the key point: its website wasn?t SEF ready. No spiders were crawling the pages so there were no visitors. A few years ago I had a web agency and experienced websites using CMS. So I digged the web for fresh technologies, installed some o...

CSS Pseudo Elements
2007-05-11 02:08:00
CSS pseudo-elements are used to add special effects to some selectors and are automatically recognized by CSS-supporting browsers. Pseudo-elements refer to sub-parts of elements, such as the first letter of a paragraph. The syntax of pseudo-elements is: selector:pseudo-element {property: value} The :first-line Pseudo-element The "first-line" pseudo-element is used to add special styles to the first line of the text in a selector: p:first-line { font-variant: small-caps; font-weight: bold } In the example above the browser displays the first line in bold with capital letters, formatted according to the "first-line" pseudo element. Where the browser breaks the line depends on the size of the browser window. A first-line pseudo-element may be used in any block-level element (such as P, H1, etc.). The :first-letter Pseudo-element The "first-letter" pseudo-element is used to add special style to the first letter of the text in a selector, to create ...

Red Color Meaning
2007-05-05 01:36:00
Today I would like to begin a series about color meaning. As I'm using red on this website, here some thoughts about it: Color is a magical element that gives feeling and emotion to art, design, and advertising. By understanding color meaning, (or the psychology of color) you can choose the right color to support and emphasize your design. Red can symbolize many things, from blood to love. Basically red symbolizes strong emotions. For example, red can symbolize Energy, strength, passion, eroticism, cheerfulness, courage, element of fire, career goals, fast action, lust, desire, vibrancy, driving forces, risk, fame, love, survival, war, revolution, danger, aggression, strength, power, determination, emotional intensity, sex, provoking, dynamic, stimulating, courage, bravery, good-tasting, force, leadership, drama, excitement, speed, heat, warmth, violence, attention, generosity and romance. The meaning of colors varies depending on one's culture, race, gender, and even age...

Photoshop Tutorial: Advanced Shadow Techniques
2007-05-02 14:44:00
The flower for this tutorial was photographed (using a Fuji FinePix) on a cold winters morning in Victoria whilst the sand (shot on Kodachrome film) hails from the Great Indian Desert in Rajasthan. Often we use the shadow settings from the blending options of the layers. It's easy for simple objects but sometimes not sufficient. With this tutorial you will learn the fine art of isolating and preserving delicate and complex shadows for transplantation to exotic new backgrounds.
